Downloading, Streaming, and Transferring Files
on Kindle Fire 1st Generation
You can access content digital content on your Kindle Fire by downloading content,
streaming videos, and transferring content to your device via USB.
Accessing Content in the Amazon Cloud
Your content libraries (for example, Books, Music, or Video) include your content available in the
Amazon Cloud, and the content you've already downloaded to your device. You can choose to access
your content through the Cloud while your Kindle Fire is connected to Wi-Fi, or to download your content
to your device for easy access even when your device isn't connected wirelessly.
Tap the Cloud tab within your Newsstand, Books, Music, Video, or Apps libraries to access your content
stored in the Amazon Cloud. Your Kindle Fire must be connected via Wi-Fi.



Subscription content, books, and apps will automatically download to your Device tab once
you've tapped on the item within the Cloud tab.
To download music, tap the Download icon. The item will appear in your Device tab when
download is complete.
To watch Amazon Instant Video content offline, tap Download to save the video to your Kindle
Fire to watch later. While downloading, you'll see an Options button. Tap this button to Pause or
Cancel your download. Once your video has finished downloading, tap Watch Now.
Downloading and Transferring Content via USB
You can transfer a variety of content from a Windows or Mac computer to your Kindle Fire through a USB
cable (sold separately), including music, videos, photos, and documents. When your Kindle Fire is
plugged into your computer, it will appear as a removable mass-storage device.
Note: Personal content transferred to your Kindle Fire is only stored on your device and not stored in the
Amazon Cloud.
System Requirements

Windows-based: Windows 2000 or later.

Macintosh: Mac OS X 10.6 running on Intel-based hardware (and AIR version 3.3.x)

USB port: An available port or an attached USB hub with an available port.
Downloading Kindle content from your Kindle Library to your computer
If you have already purchased the book, magazine or newspaper you wish to transfer to your Kindle Fire
via USB, visit Manage Your Content and Devices (https://www.amazon.com/mycd) and locate the item
you want to download from the "Your Content" section. Filter your view or search your library to quickly
find an item.
Content purchased from the Kindle Store can be downloaded to your Kindle, or Kindle compatible device,
as long as you've registered the device to the Amazon account that purchased the Kindle content. There
is no limit on the number of times eligible Kindle content titles can be downloaded to a registered Kindle
device, but there may be limits on the number of devices (usually 6) that can simultaneously use a single
book. Note that Kindle active content is not currently available for Kindle Fire.

If you haven't yet purchased the item, you can choose "Transfer via
Computer" when purchasing it from the Kindle Store, then click "Buy
now with 1-Click."
If you have more than one Kindle device registered to the account, you
will see a pop-up window asking you to choose a device. If you do not
select the correct Kindle device, you will be unable to open the content
on that device.
To download content from Manage Your Content and Devices:
1. Go to https://www.amazon.com/mycd and sign into your Amazon account.
2. Click on the "Actions" button beside the title and select "Download & transfer via USB."
3. Select the device you want to transfer the file to and then click the "Download" button. The file will
download to your computer.
4. Once you've successfully saved the file onto your computer, proceed to Transferring content via
USB for further instructions.
Downloading music from Amazon Cloud Drive to your computer
If you have already purchased the music you wish to transfer to your Kindle Fire via USB, visit Manage
Your Content and Devices and select "Show: Music" to use Amazon Cloud Player to download music to
your computer.
1. Select music to download.
 From list view: Select songs using the check boxes and click the “Download” button.
You can select up to 500 songs to download at one time.
 From album view: Click the arrow in the bottom right corner of any album art from the
Album view and choose add to “Download” from the dropdown menu.
2. Download music to your computer.
Download music using the Amazon MP3 Downloader (recommended): To download more than one
song at a time from Amazon Cloud Player you will need to use the Amazon MP3 Downloader. You can
install the Amazon MP3 Downloader by going to http://www.amazon.com/help/music, and selecting
Install Amazon Music for PC and Mac. If you don’t have the Downloader installed, you will be prompted
to install it when you click the "Download" button.
Download to your computer using your browser: Only one song can be delivered at a time, so a song
must be fully downloaded before a subsequent purchase or download is requested.
Once you've successfully saved the file onto your computer, proceed to Transferring content via USB for

Connecting your Kindle Fire via USB
1. Plug the larger end of the USB cable (sold separately) into an available USB port or a powered
USB hub connected to your computer.
2. Connect the other end of a USB cable to the micro-USB port on the bottom of your Kindle Fire.
You may need to unlock your Kindle Fire device before it can be opened on your computer.

Your Kindle Fire content cannot be accessed through the device while you are in USB drive mode. To
eject your Kindle Fire, tap the Disconnect button at the bottom of the screen, or follow these steps to eject
your Kindle Fire through your computer:

Windows Vista and 7: Click on the Start button, select Computer from the options, right-click on
the Kindle drive icon and select Eject from the pop-up menu.

Windows XP: Right-click on the Safely remove hardware icon in the lower left-hand corner of
the task bar and follow the on-screen instructions to remove Kindle.

Mac OS: Control-click on the Kindle device icon and choose Eject.
Your Kindle Fire will then exit USB drive mode and display the Home screen.
Transferring content via USB
1. Once you've connected your Kindle Fire to a computer with a USB cable (sold separately), your
Kindle Fire will appear in the same location as external USB drives usually appear. For Windows
users, this is typically in the "Computer" or "My Computer" menu. For Mac users, the drive will
appear on the desktop.
2. Open the Kindle drive; you will see several folders inside. You may need to unlock your Kindle
Fire device before it can be opened on your computer.
3. Locate the downloaded file and drag and drop it into the applicable content folder, such as Video,
Music, or Pictures.
4. Safely eject your Kindle Fire from your computer and unplug the USB cable.
Your content will appear within the corresponding content library on your device:

Books will appear in the Books library.

Personal documents will appear in the Docs library.

Music will appear in the Music library.

Pictures will appear in the Gallery app.

Videos will appear in the Gallery app. Note: Videos transferred via USB will only be available in
the Gallery app. Only videos from the Amazon Video store are shown in the Video library.
Remember, your Kindle device will only recognize the files you've transferred if:

The file is a supported file type.

Files are transferred to the correct folder for their type.

Files are free of digital rights management (DRM) software.

With Kindle Personal Documents Service, you can send your personal documents to your registered
Kindle devices, supported Kindle reading applications, and your Cloud Library through the Send to Kindle
application or your Send To Kindle email address. For more information about Kindle Personal

When you register your Kindle Fire, you'll automatically be assigned a Send-to-Kindle e-mail address. To
locate this address:
1. From the Home screen, tap the Quick Settings icon.
2. Tap My Account.
3. Your Send To Kindle email address, [name]@kindle.com, is listed under the register user's name.
Kindle Personal Documents Service Fees
Kindle Personal Documents Service doesn't charge fees for delivery of personal documents to Kindle
devices over Wi-Fi or to supported Kindle reading applications. To learn more about fees for the Kindle
Personal Documents Service using Whispernet, the wireless connection method used on some Kindle
models, go to http://www.amazon.com/kindlepersonaldocuments.
Supported File Types
Kindle Fire supports multiple file types that are free of digital rights management software. These types of
files may be transferred to your Kindle Fire via USB:

Documents: AZW, TXT,PDF, MOBI, PRC, DOC, DOCX

Audio supported within Music: MP3, Non-DRM AAC (.m4a), MIDI, OGG, WAV

Images: JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP

Video: MP4, VP8
Mobipocket files that have Digital Rights Management (DRM) protection applied are unable to read on
your Kindle Fire. If you purchased a Mobipocket file from a Mobipocket retailer, you will not be able to
open the file on your Kindle Fire.
EPUB ebooks are not supported on Kindle Fire.
You can add any of the listed documents file types to your Kindle Fire. If your file type is not listed above,
you will need to convert it to a supported file type in order to access it on your Kindle Fire. To learn more,
