ICE BLOCK
Ice block cut out from the ice with the chain saw. A T-bar with chain and backhoe were used
to remove blocks. Thickness of the ice was 36 ½ inches.
Spill Preparedness and Response since 1972
BACKHOE WITH A FROST BUCKET AND ICE CLEATS
Before using a heavy piece of equipment it was noted to members that an ice assessment was done.
Know the weight bearing capacity of the ice.
Making a trench or J Slot with a rubber tired hoe is much faster than cutting with a chainsaw.

DEBRIEFING – EXERCISE DEPLOYMENT
Safety:
What safety issues were not identified or could be managed more effectively?
Members suggested hearing protection while running the chain saw. A guard for the front of the
chainsaw cage & a measuring gage.
Equipment Deployment:
How could we have improved the equipment deployment portion of the exercise?
Splitting into groups worked great, more hands on involvement.
Equipment Deficiencies:
What equipment deficiencies did you see?
New white boards needed.
Communications:
How can we improve communications? (ie: was the sound acceptable? were directions clear?)
Mic system was not loud enough. Spread out groups (airboat was loud).
Training Effectiveness / Exercise Improvement:
How can we make these exercises more effective?
Splitting into groups worked great, more hands on involvement.
Lessons Learned:
What were the lessons learned?
Safety is #1. How to work equipment correctly. Weight capacity on ice.
Other Types of Training:
What other types of co-op exercises would you like to see?
Lake exercise.
Other Equipment Needed in this Area:
What additional equipment would be beneficial to this co-op area?
Ice anchors
