Winter trailer and ice removal area Spill Preparedness and Response since 1972 J Slot diagram spray-painted onto the ice to show where to cut. Circles in the centre of each ice block are for auger holes which a T Bar attached to a chain goes into after the block is cut. Ice Saw Spill Preparedness and Response since 1972 Ice Saw Finishing Saw Spill Preparedness and Response since 1972 ICE BLOCK Ice block cut out from the ice with the chain saw. A T-bar with chain and backhoe were used to remove blocks. Thickness of the ice was 36 ½ inches. Spill Preparedness and Response since 1972 BACKHOE WITH A FROST BUCKET AND ICE CLEATS Before using a heavy piece of equipment it was noted to members that an ice assessment was done. Know the weight bearing capacity of the ice. Making a trench or J Slot with a rubber tired hoe is much faster than cutting with a chainsaw. Spill Preparedness and Response since 1972 ICE RESCUE Spill Preparedness and Response since 1972 AIR BOAT Spill Preparedness and Response since 1972 DEBRIEFING – EXERCISE DEPLOYMENT Safety: What safety issues were not identified or could be managed more effectively? Members suggested hearing protection while running the chain saw. A guard for the front of the chainsaw cage & a measuring gage. Equipment Deployment: How could we have improved the equipment deployment portion of the exercise? Splitting into groups worked great, more hands on involvement. Equipment Deficiencies: What equipment deficiencies did you see? New white boards needed. Communications: How can we improve communications? (ie: was the sound acceptable? were directions clear?) Mic system was not loud enough. Spread out groups (airboat was loud). Training Effectiveness / Exercise Improvement: How can we make these exercises more effective? Splitting into groups worked great, more hands on involvement. Lessons Learned: What were the lessons learned? Safety is #1. How to work equipment correctly. Weight capacity on ice. Other Types of Training: What other types of co-op exercises would you like to see? Lake exercise. Other Equipment Needed in this Area: What additional equipment would be beneficial to this co-op area? Ice anchors DEBRIEFING – CLASSROOM EXERCISE Training Usefulness: Was the training of use to you? (show of hands – approximate percentage) 99% Spill Preparedness and Response since 1972 Course Material: What else could be included in this course to improve the effectiveness (ie: topics, training material, sequence of information, more case studies, etc)? Pictures of case studies. Instructor: How can a WCSS instructor be more effective in delivering this course? Instruction was great Training Application: What information did you learn today that will apply to your daily job? ICS structure.
