Poverty, injustice and disasters

= NO FAIRNESS!
= NO CHOICES!
People in sub-Saharan Africa are poorer than they were
20 years ago.
Life expectancy in sub-Saharan Africa is 29 years less
than it is for people born in the UK or Ireland.
The US spends US$1 billion (£660 million) per day on
defence. In just 13 days this would pay for health and
nutrition for the WHOLE WORLD for a year.

When all your energy goes on finding food just to
survive, dreams of health, education and a brighter future
don’t amount to much. So poverty isn’t just about not
having money, it’s also about not having choices.
Poor countries pay back more money to rich countries than rich
countries give to poor.
900 million people in the world can’t read or write.
That’s just not fair! Christian Aid wants to get rid of the injustices
that keep people poor.

1.1 billion people don’t have clean water to drink.
Three men in the United States have more money than the poorest
600 million people in the world.
What does injustice mean to you? Back up your ideas with
newspaper reports. Is there injustice in your school or community?
What is it? What can be done about it? What can you do?
Christian Aid believes we all have the
power to make changes in our world.
We don’t need to feel helpless when
we watch people suffering on the
telly – we can all make a difference

CA @ WORK:
Christian Aid helps out in emergencies around the world whenever it can,
usually by sending money to local organisations. They can then buy food
or provide shelter for communities devastated by disaster.
But it doesn’t stop there. Christian Aid’s logo states ‘we believe in life before
death’. Life should be good for people now, but that takes time. Most of the
work that Christian Aid supports is called long-term development, because
it continues to change people’s lives over a long period of time. Simple!
ACTION 3
Christian Aid works with about 570 local organisations, or partners, around
the world. Partners get on with the practical work with people in their
communities. Some follow a faith, some don’t.
They’re called partners because they have an equal share with Christian
Aid in making decisions. After all, they know what it’s really like to live in
their countries.
Read on to find out about the kinds of things these partners do...

Look at reports in newspapers or on the web. What are the
recent disasters? What are the differences between ‘disasters’
at home (for instance, flooding) and disasters overseas? What
makes the difference in how people can cope with disaster at
home and in the developing world?
