Discover how Joseph C. Brown, Prospect Robbins and their survey teams located the
initial point for the land survey of the Louisiana Purchase
To commemorate this historic event there will be 4 venues of interpretive activities in
Lee and Phillips Counties please allow plenty of time to visit all of them
1. The Confluence of the St. Francis and Mississippi Rivers will allow you to join Joseph C. Brown and his team as they survey west along
the base line.
2. Louisiana Purchase State Park will recreate the 1922 resurvey of the base line and the 1926 dedication of the monument that now marks
THE Point of Beginning.
3. The Trotting Fox Trail behind Mississippi River State Park and the St. Francis National Forest Joint Visitor Center will allow you to travel
back in time to experience what it would be like if you were living in this part of the Missouri Territory around 1815.
4. The Base Line Trail in the St. Francis National Forest will allow visitors to explore the importance of the survey journals Joseph C. Brown
and Prospect Robbins kept and how we can use that information to see how this area has changed over the past 200years. You can even
make a journal with your description of the land, plants and animals.
The Bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase Land Survey School Day will be October 16, 2015. Educators
call the Mississippi River State Park Visitor Center to register your class.
