SUPPORTING THE BREWERY IS
GOOD FOR BUSINESS
THE BREWERY WAS ESTABLISHED BY A VISIONARY LOCAL BUSINESS LEADER
The Brewery was founded in 1972 by the prominent local businessman and philanthropist,
the late Peter Scott MBE, who chaired Provincial Insurance from the late 50s to late 70s.
Peter passionately believed that local businesses should reach beyond their front doors, and
worked tirelessly within the local community. With support of the Provincial and his family
trusts, his most significant achievement was to make Kendal a vibrant, rich centre for cultural
life with the Brewery at its heart.
THE BREWERY MAKES A REAL DIFFERENCE
Over the intervening years the Brewery has fully realised Peter Scott’s ambition to become
the cultural hub for Kendal and South Lakeland, as a dynamic contributor to the local visitor
economy.
The Brewery today
• receives over 200,000 visits every year including over 50,000 day visitors and tourists
• generates £3 million per annum, which translates into £8.4 million of local economic activity, when multiplier effects are taken into account.
• contributes significantly in making Kendal one of the best places to live and work in the UK
• employs over 120 full and part-time staff and actively sources local products and services • delivers over 250 live ticketed events and 2,600 film screenings every year
• engages with up to 600 local children and young people of all ages per week and a further 600 local residents a week through its Adult Education provision.
All these outcomes are only possible because of our capacity to have a welcoming and
vibrant venue with a broad and eclectic curated programme at its heart.
This costs around £3 million per year to maintain. 87% of this is self-generated as earned
income but the programme breadth is maintained through core investment of £390,000 per
year from Arts Council England, South Lakeland District Council and Kendal Town Council.
However, this core investment over the next 2 years is at best at standstill, a 2.5% cut in real
terms. Raising £10,000 to fill the gap would make all the difference.
`For over 40 years the Brewery Arts Centre has been the creative and cultural hub of Kendal and South
Lakeland. Its unrivalled programme of drama, comedy, dance, music, film, visual arts and creative education
truly engages the whole community and supports the local economy`
