I am always particularly interested in August’s numbers as they represent the first half of our fiscal year and give us a pretty good idea of how we are likely to end the year. We budgeted to “lose” about $77,000 in 2016-2017 although only about $4,000 in the first six months. To date we are actually much better off than that-nearly $79,000 better than budget. That may well be an indication that we will end up the year with something quite close to a balance between revenues and expenses and thus not reduce our cash balance as much as we had planned to do. That’s not a bad thing; just means we need very careful in the development of the 2017-2018 budget to avoid a big jump in assessments some other year. The general category (Administration, Loop Road, Maintenance and Security) was nearly $20,000 better than budget in August; the result of more than $5,000 in unbudgeted violation fines and late fees and about $15,000 in expenses scheduled for this month that will show up in another month-it’s difficult to project just when some bills will come in. For the year to date, the category is over $50,000 better than budget primarily due to about $25,000 in unbudgeted revenues, over $10,000 in lower than anticipated insurance costs and the $15,000 in expenses mentioned earlier. Golf was about $6,000 worse than budget for the month, but stands at about $30,000 better than budget for the year to date. While revenues fell about $3,700 short of the budgeted amount, they were about $4,000 better than August of 2015. Year to year revenues are virtually equal. The positive budget performance is primarily the result of costs being about $15,000 less than budgeted in each of two categories, employee wages in golf maintenance (due to being short two workers for a period of time) and employee health insurance (less people enrolled and lower than anticipated premiums). Food and Beverage was about $6,000 better than budget for the month on strong sales, but is about $6,000 worse than budget for the year to date. The good news is that revenues are better than budgeted ($9,000 for the month and $14,000 for the year) and also better year to year ($12,000 for the month and $35,000 for the year). Predictably, more business brings more expense and the bottom line is as stated earlier. The Reserve Account balance remains at a healthy level ($3,093,513) although that will decline somewhat as we make the final payments on the golf course fence work and the kitchen/restaurant work. Aged owner balances remain virtually unchanged from the start of the year with the exception of violation fines which have increased about $13,000. Available cash balances dropped a bit in August but remain just above $1,000,000 -a little higher than I expected at this time. Pat Calnon Los Prados Community Association Income & Expense Summary From the Chief Operating Officer…. Dear Residents, The clubhouse reopens on October 1st. The restaurant has a new look and a new menu. Please come up and join us for this exciting change. Also, we have adjusted our happy hour as well: Monday Night Football 5:00 – 8:00pm Tuesdays through Thursdays 4:00 – 6:00pm All drinks will be 50% off and we have appetizer specials as well. At the conclusion of Monday Night Football, happy hour on Mondays will change to 4:00 – 6:00pm. The golf course fencing project continues. The masonry work is going well and the iron fencing replacement should begin at the end of September. We will post a notice letting those impacted by the change when they are reaching your location. Please feel free to contact the front desk should you have any questions. As always, thank you for your continued support and feedback. Cordially, Margaret Thayer Chief Operating Officer President’s Column... We are very excited about the restaurant and bar renovation and will be celebrating it “Official” Grand Opening on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Don’t worry it really opens on October 1st, but the 12th will be the “Official” Grand Opening. Please stop by the clubhouse during this time to see our beautiful new restaurant and enjoy a complimentary snack and beverage. Also the F&B staff has asked me to remind you that they expect the restaurant ti be very busy on October 12th so; please make a reservation for dinner that evening Next the fencing project is well on its way. Quite a few homes have had their block wall repaired and waiting for the fencing. I am sure that this will help enhance the golf course. The water well has hit water at approximately 650 feet and we will benefit from this well to save Los Prados a lot of expense on water and they expect to get the final permits by the start of next year . Had a talk with Gary St John and he has done a lot of work on fixing various tree boxes and by the time over seeding is finished our course will have a new and fresh look! Also talked with Gary about maybe looking into a different approach for the over seeding. Some courses in Las Vegas are using different methods in their approach in not having to over seed in September . Maybe this will save Los Prados a lot of money by not being closed . This is something that can be looked at a future date. Ed Ujifusa President Activities at Attention Los Prados Residents…. You now have control of your guest list. Just as Joe approached the tee a voice from the heavens said, "Joe, use a new ball." Joe looked around and not a soul was in view, so he put a brand new ball on the tee. Before he could take his shot the same voice called, "Joe, take a practice swing." Joe obeyed and swung as hard as he could, slightly off balance at the end. The same voice called one last time, "Joe, use an old ball." Jerry Dunlop, PGA Director of Golf Los Prados Bowling League The Los Prados league will begin it 21st season this fall. LOS PRADOS BOOK CLUB October will find us reading The Nineteenth Wife by David Ebershoff It is 1875, and Ann Eliza Young has recently separated from her powerful husband, Brigham Young, prophet and leader of the Mormon Church. Expelled and an outcast, Ann Eliza embarks on a crusade to end polygamy in the United States. A rich account of her family’s polygamous history is revealed, including how both she and her mother became plural wives. Yet soon after Ann Eliza’s story begins, a second exquisite narrative unfolds—a tale of murder involving a polygamist family in present-day Utah. Jordan Scott, a young man who was thrown out of his fundamentalist sect years earlier, must reenter the world that cast him aside in order to discover the truth behind his father’s death. As Ann Eliza’s narrative intertwines with that of Jordan’s search, readers are pulled deeper into the mysteries of love, family, and faith. For November we have chosen The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver The Bean Trees is bestselling author Barbara Kingsolver’s first novel, now widely regarded as a modern classic. It is the charming, engrossing tale of rural Kentucky native Taylor Greer, who only wants to get away from her roots and avoid getting pregnant. She succeeds, but inherits a 3-year-old native-American little girl named Turtle along the way, and together, from Oklahoma to Tucson, Arizona, half-Cherokee Taylor and her charge search for a new life in the West Written with humor and pathos, this highly praised novel focuses on love and friendship, abandonment and belonging as Taylor, out of money and seemingly out of options, settles in dusty Tucson and begins working at Jesus Is Lord Used Tires while trying to make a life for herself and Turtle. (5208 Elm Grove) The author of such bestsellers as The Lacuna, The Poisonwood Bible, and Flight Behavior, Barbara Kingsolver has been hailed for her striking imagery and clear dialogue, and this is the novel that kicked off her remarkable literary career We are open to all residents of Los Prados and friends as well. We meet the first Wednesday of the month at 12:00 in the Cypress Room. After a lively discussion, those who can, stay and enjoy lunch in the Clubhouse. NONFICTION RECOMMENDATION If you are interested in quests for lost treasures, then be sure to read “Jungleland” (2010) by Christopher S. Stewart. It is a gripping tale of his trek to find the lost city of “Ciudad Blanca (White City)” . This city of gold is reportedly somewhere in the jungles of the Mosquito Coast. He follows the trail of a previous explorer and one time spy in this ambitious treasure seeking adventure. An engrossing tale of determination to endure many hardships to find a great reward. A WORD ON ONE OF MY TOP FAVORITE BOOKS If you want your own adventure, try finding the novel “Pay Back” (1989) by J. C. Pollock. This outof-print novel is a fast paced novel about man’s determined pursuit of his wife’s killer. Mixed in is some Cold War events. This book is jammed packed with strong action sequences and an ending that will make you want to stand up and cheer and would make a movie audience burst into applause. Author has a strong background in Special Operations and wrote several other books including “Goering’s List “ (1993) and “Threat Case” (1991). If you find and read this book and don’t find it one of the best in this field, I will be greatly shocked. Author stopped writing in the early 1990s and has vanished off the radar . If you want to know more, just ask me. LIBRARY REMINDER! As a finding guide, a book’s publication date in marked on the bottom of the book. Thus the notation (16) would indicate the book was published in 2016. Various dates on the bottom such as (99) and (15) would tell you that the book was first published in 1999 and reprinted in 2015. Also, please remember that the Library is constantly being updated. The space for your favorite author or genre might look the same but there is no assurance that the same books are on that shelf. Many, more than half, are euthanized because lack of space and resources, and lack of willing adopters. Adopting a dog is a great thing to do but be sure that you do your research ahead of time and that you’re truly ready to become a dog owner – it’s a lot of work! Go to a site like petfinder.com and look for your local shelter and you should come up with results of dogs that are waiting to be adopted. There will be some information posted by the shelter about the dog’s temperament, whether it gets along with kids, other animals, etc. Then do some research on the breed, and schedule a visit to the shelter to see if this dog is the right fit for you and your family. If not, try again. Your new best friend is waiting for you!
