Transferware Database of Patterns and Sources Pattern #1497 Pattern Name: Chinese Landscape Center Pattern Border Alternate Names: Plank Bridge, Riverside Pavilion Category: Chinoiserie / Based on Chinese original Border: Floral and Botanical / Floral Sprays Additional Information: This 9.5 inch plate has a molded pattern on the rim and down into the edge of the well. The impressed mark "Mason's Cambrian Argil" is discussed on page 200 in Godden1984. The impressed mark was used on printed earthenware patterns as early as the 1820s. Records show that Mason purchased Cambrian clay in the 1819-21 period. The border has a trellis pattern at the outer rim and three floral sprays as the main design. The center design is rather open although it has quite a concentration of pattern elements on the left hand side. Godden refers to the pattern as a Chinese Landscape on p. 26 in Ironstone1999 where a plate matching this one fills an entire page as Colour Plate 12. It is dated c. 1825-35. This pattern is related to a hand painted Chinese right-sided pattern with a trellis diaper border seen here. The name 'Plank Bridge' pattern came from a sale catalog at SamlesburyHall1987. The alternate name shown here of Riverside Pavilion is discussed on p. 10 in FOB #130. It is illustrated on a round tureen stand and has the same impressed mark as seen here. Earlier discussion of the pattern is noted in Copeland1999, p. 165, where a saucer dish is illustrated. A worn copper plate is shown on p. 88, fig. 27 on the back of a Spode pattern "Love Chase", giving the possibility that it is also a Spode pattern. Tom Jones' article in FOB Bulletin #38, pp. 6-7 (Winter 1982-3) shows a saucer dish he purchased in the pattern. He contacted Robert Copeland about the example in his book and was able to compare engravings. Jones concluded that his dish had a different engraving. He named the pattern Riverside Pavilion. In the meantime, Robert Copeland was given a cup and saucer with the pattern on a known Mason shape. The latest news of interest is © 2005-2017 TRANSFERWARE COLLECTORS CLUB.
