Conference theme
The topics of hybridization and creolization in the translation process and intercultural
communication are certainly not new. In its very nature, translation is the most typical hybrid
and hybridizing phenomenon, reflected even in the various ways it is approached. However,
the need for a more consistent approach due to increasingly strong and expansive cultural
overlap, accompanied and supported by mass media technology, is currently a hot topic.
Hybridization as a quality and hybridism as a phenomenon, hybridisms as results of
hybridizations, hybridization as a process. Clashes of cultures, systems, languages, texts,
genres and styles, establishment of new communication forms and the need for efforts to
achieve balance.
In Popovič’s terminology creolization represents harmony; it settles the tension
between what is different and what is ours, between exotization and naturalization, between
translation methods which substitute the original and those which adhere to it.
What is the relationship between hybridity and creolization? Is creolization usually the
best possible translation strategy? What forms of hybridity can be observed in source and
target communication? What strategies and solutions should we advise translators to use when
working with hybrid texts? This wide topic encourages an interdisciplinary approach and
provides an opportunity to think about genre hybridity, community interpreting, interlanguage contaminations and interferences or style overlaps, pointing to the need to evaluate
different viewpoints on the importance of hybridity and creolization in the context of specific
cases.
