THE MANY
FACES OF
CHRIST
INTRODUCTION: I’m using the title in
a figurative way to refer to the different
attitudes and dispositions of The Lord.
I. His face of obedience.
The Lord’s obedience started in heavensee Philippians 2:5-11.
Sometimes I describe the Lord as the
only human being who always did His
Father’s will!
“My meat is to do the will of him that sent
me, and to finish his work”-John 4:34.
John 19:30, “It is finished!”
II. His face of anger.
A. When He cleansed the temple-see John 2:13-17.
B. When He healed the man with a withered handMark 3:1-5.
III. His face of compassion.
A. Matthew 9:36, “When he saw the multitudes, he
was moved with compassion on them.”
B. Matthew 14:14, “And Jesus went forth, and saw a
great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward
them, and he healed their sick.”
“And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was
moved with compassion toward them, because they were as
sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them
many things”-Mark 6:34.
Afterwards, The Lord fed this great multitude composed
of five thousand men, plus women and children!
C. Mark 1:40&41, Christ healed the leper
because He had compassion upon him.
D. It was because of The Lord’s compassion
that He healed the son who was a lunatick, or epilepticsee Matthew 17:14-21; Luke 9:17-29.
E. It was because of The Lord’s compassion
that He raised the widow of Nain’s only son-see Luke
7:11-16.
F. “And he arose, and came to his father. But
when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and
had compassion on him, and ran, and fell on his neck, and
kissed him”-Luke 15:20.
REMEMBER: The response of the loving father in this
story (which is representative of that of God and Christ)
is set over against the snobbish attitude of the Pharisees
and scribes who condemned the Lord for “Receiving
sinners!”-see Luke 15:2.
IV. His face of sorrow.
A. “Jesus wept”-John 11:35.
B. “And when he was come near, he beheld the
city, and wept over it”-Luke 19:41 & context. See also
Matthew 23:37&38.
NOTE: This weeping of The Lord was with regard to
Jerusalem’s destruction which was yet 40 years
future!!
Don’t we believe The Lord still weeps today as He
looks down from heaven and sees men and women,
and nations headed for eternal destruction?
V. His face of strictness-Luke 13:24-30.
When the Lord shuts the door, He will say to those
knocking on the door, “I know you not whence ye are;
depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity”-v. 27.
VI. His face of love.
A. “Then Jesus beholding him, loved him”Mark 10:21.
B. “Having loved his own which were in the
world, he loved them to the end”-John 13:1.
C. “It is finished!!”-John 19:30.
VII. His abiding face.
A. “Lo, I am with you always, even unto the
end of the world. Amen”-Matthew 28:20.
B. Hebrews 13:5, “Let your conversation be
without covetousness; and be content with such
things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never
leave thee, nor forsake thee.”
“Since those early days first became a part of my
awareness, I have considered Jesus of Nazareth my dearest
friend, knowing that even when I did wrong and felt the
guilt of such, he still loved me and wanted me for an
everlasting companion in heaven someday. I desperately
long for others to likewise know him in this fashion.
It is my fond hope that all who read this volume will
be drawn closer to the Master Teacher whose earthly
mission has blessed the lives of untold millions. And I
cannot conclude without breathing this sentiment:
Thank you, Lord, for all you’ve meant to
me, and for your abiding presence in my life.
Be with me still-until my journey here is
finished”-Wayne Jackson, Jesus Christ The Master Teacher,
pgs. 191&192.
