PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT
GROUNDSKEEPER MAINTENANCE WORKER
DEFINITION
Responsible for the cleaning, maintenance, and repair of indoor and outdoor recreation facilities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various
type of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not
exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the
position.

Participates in the routine maintenance and repair of athletic fields and equipment and
town owned land; lines fields for different sports; removes and disposes of rubbish;
installs sports equipment; prepares fields for games; picks up leaves, and mows lawn.

May oversee ice rink operations; operates Zamboni machine. Collects fees, sharpens
skates, prepares rink for skating and hockey games, repairs equipment, informs
patrons when their ice time is up, assigns keys for locker rooms, performs routine
maintenance and responds to inquiries, requests, and complaints. Assists in operation
of the skate shop, sells and stocks supplies.

Assists in the operation, maintenance, and repairs of town pools, prepares pools for
the season, adds required chemicals to adjust water quality and prepare for
swimming, and posts required safety signs and markings.

Provides for the routine maintenance and repair of recreation buildings, facilities,
grounds, and vehicles.

Performs routine cleaning and custodial tasks. Sweeps and mops floors, picks up litter
at all recreational fields, performs ice and snow removal at all recreation buildings.
Fixes fences, moves picnic tables, and sets up and removes bleachers.

Performs minor carpentry tasks, painting duties, and small engineer repair. Removes trash.

Operates various mechanical equipment, such as lawn mowers and other light
equipment.

May oversee the work of part-time, seasonal and/or temporary employees.

As requested, participates in snow and ice removal operations and other emergencies
declared by the Public Works department.

Performs a variety of related duties as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Under general supervision. The employee is familiar with the work routine and uses initiative in
carrying out recurring assignments without specific instruction and often determines work
methods. The supervisor provides additional, specific instruction for new, difficult, or unusual
assignments. The employee refers unusual situations to the supervisor for advice and further
instructions and may speak on behalf of supervisor as needed.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
The employee may give direction to part time employees.
ACCOUNTABILITY
The nature of work means that errors can be easily detected, usually by the employee.
Consequences of errors and poor judgement may include delay or loss of service, or monetary
loss. When operating equipment, poor judgement could lead to damage to buildings and
equipment, or injury.
JUDGMENT
In most cases, the work involves numerous standardized practices, procedures, or general
instructions that govern the work and in some cases may require additional interpretation.
Judgment is needed to locate, select, and apply the most pertinent practice, procedure, regulation,
or guideline.
COMPLEXITY
The work consists of a variety of duties which generally follow standardized practices,
procedures, regulations, or guidelines. The sequence of work and/or the procedures followed
vary according to the nature of the transaction and/or the information involved, or sought, in a
particular situation.
NATURE AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTS
Relationships are primarily with co-workers, program participants and staff from other
departments. The frequent contact with the public needing to resolve issues and complaints.
Courtesy and tact are required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High School diploma or equivalent and one to three years of experience in landscaping and

repair and maintenance of facilities such as swimming pools, ice rinks, and buildings, or any
equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in snow plowing, carpentry,
small engine repair, and/or other trade skills preferred. Driver’s license is required. Hoisting
license, pesticide applicator’s license, and pool operator certification desirable.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY, AND SKILLS
Knowledge: Knowledge of the operations and maintenance of recreation facilities. Knowledge of
safety procedures.
Abilities: Ability to work with power and hand tools. Ability to work independently. Ability to
apply best practices and work in a safe manner.
Skills: Communication, interpersonal, and math skill. Mechanical skill and skill in operating
specialized equipment such as trader/backhoe, snow plow, and zero turn mower.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Working conditions involve machine or related noise or a combination of unpleasant elements
such as odors, chemical fumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil, dirt, or grease. Includes work under
typical shop conditions or outdoor work. Incumbent may be required to work beyond normal
business hours in response to emergency situations.
PHYSICAL, MOTOR, AND VISUAL SKILLS
Physical Skills
Work requires moderate intermittent physical strength and effort daily, such as lifting heavy
objects, carrying the object(s) and stacking them or placing them in a vehicle or storage area. In
addition, pulling, pushing, standing, or walking for the full work day may also be involved. A
great deal of physical effort must be exerted at this level.
Motor Skills
Duties may involve assignments requiring application of hand and eye coordination with finger
dexterity and motor coordination.
Visual Skills
Visual demands are for analytical purposes as well as for the proper and safe operation and
judgement in the use of mechanical equipment and tools.
