The Exchange is open to Class II & III students who have completed at least 2 years of Spanish. Students who participate in the Exchange must take Spanish at Milton the following year. The Spanish Department must take many factors into account during the selection process, particularly finding viable matches with counterparts from El Pilar. This application is not a guarantee of acceptance into the program. The approximate dates of the Exchange are from late May to late June (Milton at El Pilar) and from late August/early September to late September (El Pilar at Milton). Students accepted to the program must fully commit to it and may not partake in activities that would preclude their full participation in the Exchange (for example, sports camps, Milton’s Transition Program or offcampus programs such as the Milton Mountain School, City Term, Chewonki and SYA). The cost of the program is $2,800 which will be billed in January/February after acceptance. The program fee covers: airfare, entrance fees to all museums and monuments, group excursions & transportation to El Escorial, El Valle de los Caídos, Segovia, Toledo, and Córdoba, group activities in Madrid, and all meals including one at a worldfamous Tablao Flamenco. If you do not have a valid passport, you and your family are required to obtain one for you. You must provide valid (expiration date after June) passport information in January after acceptance. If you hold a passport from a country from which a visa is required to enter Spain, you and your family are required to obtain that visa. Please note that once an accepted candidate signs the contract to participate in the Spanish Exchange, the student may not withdraw except in case of emergency. (This policy has been established because the Spanish school needs to know the exact number of participants and because travel rates are based on the number of students traveling on the exact dates established). The applicant should note that the Exchange is an academic program and that he/she will be expected to treat it with integrity and sincere effort. Just as at Milton, families whose children attend Colegio El Pilar live in a variety of areas. Participants might live either downtown or in a suburb of Madrid. Each student will travel between home and El Pilar with his/her counterpart either on foot or by train, bus, car, or subway. If you are a day student and English is spoken in your home, you are expected to host your counterpart from Spain in late August/September. If you are a boarding student, or if you are a day student and English is not the primary language spoken in your home, you are required to find a host family for the September portion of the Exchange. Host families must be chosen and approved by midJanuary. Failure to find a suitable host family by the deadline will result in immediate dismissal from the program. Applicants should be willing to give up the old and try out the new. Host families are not expected to drastically change their lives to accommodate participants, rather, the participants should be willing to try whatever activities, foods or schedule the host family offers. Describe your reasons for wanting to participate in the Exchange. In what ways would you contribute to the success of the program? Why should we take you on the Exchange? (Give specific examples). Living with a host family in Madrid for a month, you will likely be asked to do or not do things that are typical to your life at home.
