The AUU is a vital organisation on
campus, providing an invaluable
contribution to campus culture
and necessary services to students.
I believe that student engagement
is indispensable for a healthy and
vibrant university community.
Loud student voices and strong
representation is essential for the
rights of students to be upheld and
their needs to be met. If elected,
I would aim to be a visible board
member, available to students and
present at union events. I would
provide a progressive voice on the
union board and work to ensure that
the union remains accountable and
above all else representative and
inclusive of the diverse range of
students studying at the University
of Adelaide.

I plan to do.

I plan to save (yes save) the AUU
from financial ruin. If you have paid
attention to the recently released
AUU annual report, you would have
noticed that the annual deficit is
growing at an alarming rate. The
deficit for 2013 rose to a staggering
amount of $60801 which almost
doubles the 2012 deficit of $36989.
If this continues, there won’t be an
AUU in the near future.
Unlike Mr. Abbot, I don’t believe in
cutting services to balance the
budget. Instead, I will fight for more
control of the SSAF, engage with
more potential sponsors, and organize
more fundraising events to the
increase the income of AUU.
I am politically neutral and believe
that factional politics only serve to
distract the AUU from real student
needs. I would like to bring political
neutrality to the AUU and make sure
that the student interests are placed
before political interests.

I’m running for the AUU board in 2015
because I believe I can play an important role in ensuring the board
continues to expand and deliver
crucial university student services
along with ensuring a diverse, balanced and fun university experience.
The Adelaide University Union offers
countless services that students may
not even know about. It is an issue
that I’d like to address by connecting
you to the services which can enhance your university experience Gemma is the Fresh candidate for
AUU Board. Fresh want to help
rebuild campus culture with more
events so your union and SRC are
visible. We also want to see the union
and SRC more involved in state and
national campaigns against the
education cuts, and other Federal
budget measures that negatively
impact students.
I know that students want and need
efficient and accessible university
services and events. As a board director,
I commit to being an efficient director,
and being approachable for students to
voice their concerns and opinions. After
all, the AUU exists for you!
I believe that I exemplify the AUU
values of accessible education,
diversity, partnerships and community, professionalism and democracy,
and I commit to living by these values
as an elected board director.
Having been a general councillor on
the SRC this year, having sat on other
non-university boards, and having
worked on policy at state, national
and international levels, I have the
knowledge and skills required to be a
great board director.
I know that students want to have
the best time at university but this
process can be damn expensive! My
platform is to increase access to
professional services, networking
opportunities, regular student socials,
cheap meals and exclusive student
deals on campuses and in the CBD.
The availability and affordability of
these essential services positively
impact on a student’s wellbeing, which we know is paramount
to success at university.
In 2015, I want you to experience all
that and so much more. I’m running
for AUU Board because these services
matter, students matter and deserve
an innovative candidate who will
firmly advocate on their behalf. I will
also actively improve the engagement
between students, executives and
affiliated student organisations to
ensure that you can account on your
elected body.

The University of Adelaide is a place
of great diversity. My campaign for
AUU Board will aim to unite the
diversity that defines us and make
the university experience richer for
all students. There is a need to

between faculties and with people
of all ethnic groups. The initiative lies
with the AUU.
I hope to be elected this year to the

I feel that my experience on the
SRC this year and my involvement

I believe that students not only need
quality education but also an environment and community which supports
them. The AUU plays a vital role in
providing students with a wide range
of support services, opportunities,

I will advocate for changes that will
make the real difference to a student’s life. At university, there is the
need to deliver cheaper on-campus
dining, increase the semester printing
quota and increase accessibility to
computing suits across campus.
These are examples of the small
changes that will truly have a significant impact on the wider student
population.
I am experienced in student advocacy,

We are facing the most anti-student
government in a long time, one that
does not care how much students
have to pay for their education, and
how accessible higher education is.
But thankfully we have seen an
incredibly strong fight against the
federal government by students
which has stopped the government’s
reform agenda dead in its tracks.
Hi I’m Renjie Du, fifth year engineering and arts student. In 2013 I was
Australian international student of the
year, and I’m the current board
director for the Adelaide University
Union, and the president for the
multicultural club.
The SRC as the student representative body on campus has a central
responsibility in defending student
rights and interests, whether this is
defending public education, or taking
a stand against issues that affect
everyone. There are numerous social
justice questions that confront us
today. Our SRC and student movement has a proud tradition of taking
up these questions.
Next year we need an SRC President
that will continue the fight against
what the government is doing to our
education. I am eager to lead protests
against the government, to make sure
that we get the best education

I’m approachable and engaged, in

As Social Justice Officer this year I

fighting alongside students for
education rights, for refugees, for
Palestine. This active engagement in
politics and struggle is Left Action’s
conception of what the SRC should
be doing, and this active engagement
by students has echoed through the
halls of parliament, pushing back
Abbott’s agenda.
Unfortunately the scourge of neoliberalism leaves no place untouched. This
year we have seen it rear its ugly head
within the SRC, with arguments that
the SRC should resemble a corporate
boardroom more than a thriving
democratic student institution that

Hi, I’m Amelia Kinsman and I’m the
Left Action candidate for Queer
Officer on the SRC.
This Uni should be a safe, progressive
space for any LGBTI+ person to be
themselves, and must have adequate
support networks, both social and
professional, to create that safe and
progressive space. We especially owe
it to those who are scared and
vulnerable.
As a Gender Studies/History major
and a queer-identifying person I’m
passionate about queer rights and
representation.
As Queer officer, I plan to organise
LGBTIQ students at Adelaide to come
together as interconnected community. There are a number of services
at the University that can support
queer identifying students and as the
Queer Officer, I will work to connect
the students who need these services
to them.
I’m passionate about become Queer
Officer because I have suffered a vile
homophobic attack, requiring a facial
reconstruction through five operations over two years. I will never stop
feeling the pain of the bone grafts
and titanium around my face; but
even more so, the humiliation and
degradation of the attack is psychologically stuck on me. The pain is a
daily reminder of what we have to
deal with and it’s on that basis that
I promise that I WILL STAND UP
FOR YOU and YOU CAN DEPEND
ON ME.
I’ve been an international pro-bono
human rights lawyer and gay activist
for some time, mostly successful due
to my undying determination and
passion. I will not stop my activism
until we have equal rights across the
board and that all bigotry is tackled
head-on.
The Abbott government’s education
agenda will disproportionately affect
queer students due to the systematic
oppression already present in our
heteronormative society.
I will fight against these cuts, the
queerphobia and discrimination in our
university, and the oppression of all
minorities if I were to be elected. We
need a passionate, active SRC to lead
students in the struggle against
oppression and for SOCIAL JUSTICE.
It’s a sad reality that we still live in a
queerphobic world and we need to
work to change that. From issues such
as marriage equality through to
bullying in classrooms, we need to
organise. At a time when support
services are under attack and tertiary
education is in danger of becoming
so much more exclusive, we need to
join with the broader student movement to fight the cuts that will hurt
queer students.
I’m excited to be running alongside

people who have been some of the
most visible activists on campus

With strong student representation,
we can work with the university to
promote the safety and health of
women on campus. IndyGo has
already been successful in campaigning for a university-run bystander
awareness program. I believe that the
Women’s Collective and other
on-campus groups could and should
play a larger role in advising and
campaigning for university policy such
as this, and I will work with those
groups to provide women on campus
with a strong voice.
As a science student, I am also keenly
aware of the lack of women in the
higher ranks of some fields. I believe
that this gender disparity can lead to a
lack of mentorship opportunities for
women hoping to pursue further

WHITEOAK
Hi I’m Sharon! I am a mature aged,
third year student enrolled in Law/
Social Sciences. I have lived in the
northern suburbs of Adelaide for 14
years and see the ongoing effect of
disadvantage daily. It has been a
difficult journey personally, making it
to university and difficult still in
deciding to make a foray into student
politics.
Having extensive paid and unpaid
work experience in aged, disability
and indigenous communities, I feel
I’ve seen enough alienation, prejudice
and discrimination against disadvantaged groups in the real world to
recognise this being mirrored at
times, within the university!
I desire to make small but poignant
changes within the university to
enable all students the same opportunities as the next, irrespective of
background. I feel passionately that
students should have access to
appropriate and specific services to
break down existing barriers to
feeling fully included and represented
within the University of Adelaide.

I’m proud to say that after months
of pestering various senior management staff, I have finally brought the
university’s attention to the lack of
generic transferrable skills training
and career readiness programs for
postgraduate students. I hope to use
the SRC as a platform to sustain the
push and bring these much needed
skills training and programs to
postgraduate students as soon as
possible.
Another serious issue I’m tackling now
is the lack of social support for
postgraduates. To address this issue,
I help started the Adelaide University

moment, the events we run are quite
small due to the lack of resources.
Being the SRC postgraduate officer

Postgraduates are the ‘other’ kind of
student, who can be easily forgotten
within the broader scheme of university politics. Their interests can be
buried by discourse and policy
concerning other matters. I believe it
is the duty of the Postgraduate
Student Officer to ensure that this is
not the case, and that our concerns
are represented fairly, openly, and
consistently.
As a PhD student in my second year,
and a long-time student of the
University, I have had the opportunity
to observe various issues. Areas that
I am particularly concerned about,
based upon past and present circumstances, include course fees, professional and academic development,
casual-labour practices, community
engagement, and inter-faculty
dialogue. Ultimately, I will aim
to ensure that postgraduates are
provided with a vibrant and
rewarding experience which maximises their professional and academic
opportunities. This also entails
seeking to challenge any measures
which threaten to undermine such
opportunities.
We are at a moment where we face all
sorts of pressures and limitations. My
goal is to communicate such concerns, and to ensure that our experience is of the highest possible quality.

As someone born and raised in India, I
strongly feel that students such as me
face discrimination in Australia and
that the SRC needs to be a body that
fights oppression and promotes
equality, especially when the government backs up and promotes racist
agendas such as the new Islamophobic
laws being introduced, disguised as
‘anti-terrorism’.
Hi, I’m Tracy. As a student from a
culturally diverse background, I can
understand how racism affects students’ abilities to participate in university life in a multitude of ways.
If elected, I will campaign to raise
awareness about racism as a system of
oppression and not just the behaviour
of individuals and the impact these
systems have on people. I will draw
attention to intersecting issues affecting culturally and linguistically diverse
students such as socio-economic
barriers, education and cultural background of parents, how these affect
students’ experiences at university, and
how such experiences may impact
mental and emotional wellbeing.
I have helped build anti-racist rallies
where people stand in solidarity with
Palestine against the horrible genocide carried out by Israel, and refugee
rallies, fighting against the Abbott
government’s denial of asylum
seekers’ basic rights.
The deregulation of university fees
will hurt all students, especially
international students. I and the rest
of Left Action are for an SRC which
will seek to cease the treatment of
these students as cash cows, and
fights against the inequality students
are subjected to. If elected, I will fight
for a SRC that takes on racism and is
inclusive of all students regardless of
ethnicity or religion.
The effects of systemic racism can be
invisible to anyone who doesn’t experience them. As students from culturally/
linguistically diverse backgrounds might
know, statements such as ‘your English
is so good’ are representative of the
casual racism we experience on a
day-to-day basis. Casual racism has
significant effects on the broader
perception of people of colour, wellbeing, and contributes to negative
individual perceptions of standing and
worth in society. I hope to make this a
focus of my campaign work.
The Left Action team are proud
anti-racists and strong supporters of
SOCIAL JUSTICE.

I’m Emily Hendrikx and I am running
for the position of Environment

our Federal Government is dangerously dismantling environmental
policies that protect our future. My political stance is moderate

Firstly I want greater representation

2014 has seen the state of social justice
come under vicious attacks. The Liberal’s

response, the public expressed mass
discontent through mass mobilisations
where tens of thousands have hit the

Our cohort is broad and diverse- seeking to complete, enhance or embark

of economic necessity, workplace
obligatory accreditation or fulfilling an
ambition of gaining a tertiary education.
Challenges such as parenting, disability,

academic qualifications. I have a
particular interest in issues affecting
disadvantaged students, particularly on
economic grounds.
I am working with the learning technologies team as a committee member

While we are not just our illnesses or
disabilities, they can affect all aspects of
our lives. In collating information about
how to best get around campus using
elevators and the location of accessible
(and regular) toilets, I hope to make
everyday life on campus easier. I also
aim to make disability more visible and

I will seek to ensure that all lectures are
recorded and lecture resources made
readily available so that illness and
disability, and our needs for self-care,
disadvantage us as little as possible. I
will campaign to ensure all faculties
cater appropriately to disabled and ill

I believe that everyone experiences
university differently, having come
from various backgrounds and

For me, it is about implementing
policies and changes, based on merit
not political ideology, that facilitate a

must take into consideration the

The ones who suffer the most when
decisions are made without their input

them yet the ones who are least

I will advocate for changes that will
make the real difference to a student’s life. At university, there is the
need to deliver cheaper on-campus
dining, increase the semester printing
quota and increase accessibility to
computing suits across campus.
These are examples of the small
changes that will truly have a significant impact on the wider student
population.
I am experienced in student advocacy,
having served as the Ethno-cultural
officer on the SRC in 2014. My
campaign will increase the accessibility of university resources and enhance the university experience for all

Hi I’m Sharon! I am a mature aged,
third year student enrolled in Law/
Social Sciences. I have lived in the
northern suburbs of Adelaide for 14
years and see the ongoing effect of
disadvantage daily. It has been a
difficult journey personally, making it
to university and difficult still in
deciding to make a foray into student
politics.
Having extensive paid and unpaid
work experience in aged, disability
and indigenous communities, I feel
I’ve seen enough alienation, prejudice
and discrimination against disadvantaged groups in the real world to
recognise this being mirrored at
times, within the university!
I desire to make small but poignant
changes within the university to
enable all students the same opportunities as the next, irrespective of
background. I feel passionately that
students should have access to
appropriate and specific services to
break down existing barriers to
feeling fully included and represented
within the University of Adelaide.

The National Union of Students has
been highly successful in fighting Tony
Abbott’s anti-student government.
They have held protests which have
gathered huge amounts of student
and community support and we’ve

of these attacks in the Senate.
We need to ensure that the National
Union of Students ‘maintains the rage’
and continues to fight for students
across the country. I am eager to
ensure that quality representatives
attend this conference to ensure that
the NUS maintains its high standards.
We also need to make sure that other
items come across the National Union

we get less students living in poverty,
and how do we ensure that higher
education is accessible for all.

In 2014 I served as the Education
and Disability officer for the South
Australian NUS Branch. I helped
organise demonstrations against
budget cuts to Education, as well as
assemblies where students from all
three universities, and from TAFE,
could meet to organise the campaign
to protect public education. I also
found many issues relating to the
function of the NUS which I want to

that they can be heard, with the
intention that the NUS could serve us
better.
Students are under attack – we
face crippling debt, higher course
fees and cuts to vital servies thanks
to Christopher Pyne and the Liberal
Government.
I’m approachable and engaged, in
touch with student life and the
student issues we face. I’m passionate

It is a truth universally acknowledged,
that a single man in possession of a
good fortune must be in want of a
wife women in want of an education
must study teaching and nursing,
while men must study dentistry and
law. It is known that law and dentistry
cost more than teaching and nursing.
So logically, women will pay less for
university.
I’m a member of left action and
I’m running for the National Union
of Students, the body that has
spearheaded the successful
campaign against Abbott and Pyne’s
education cuts.
A University experience is more than
just earning your qualification: it’s an
experience that will impact the rest
of our lives.
On the subject of the possession of
good fortune, ‘the poorest people
don’t have cars and don’t actually
drive that far’, so why worry about
them at university at all?
Now, the the trouble with our Liberal
friends I quote above is not that
they’re ignorant; it’s just that they
know so much that isn’t actually so. So what to do I hear you ask. Well, to
maintain the theme of quoting Liberal
cabinet ministers: We must ‘continue
to go out onto the streets and
protest, and actively encourage the
public to support us in our campaign
for free education’ - Joe Hockey 1987. A strong National Union of Students
is needed to fight this anti-student
government. WE should also instigate a High Court
challenge to the validity of state
public transport services refusing to
recognise interstate student concession cards.
The liberals will not stop until they
have completed their agenda of
replicating a US style education
system. That is why we must continue
with the strategy of mobilising
students to pressure the government
and university administrations.
The mass mobilisations and snap
actions against liberal politicians on
campuses that I have been involved in
have been a great success and made
the National Union of Students more
relevant that ever.
This year I have been actively campaigning on campus by handing out
thousands of leaflets, putting up
hundreds of posters, giving announcements in lectures and running
stalls to promote the education
campaign. We need to committed
activists to continue this strategy,
which is why I am running.

Australian universities are a place of
great diversity. It is important for us
to value our differences and the rich
culture that defines who we are. My
campaign for NUS Delegate will be
centered around the need to integrate students of different cultural
backgrounds as well as those from
different States of Australia. I will
promote increased social interaction

sporting events and academic competitions. This will be modeled around
extracurricular rivalries that exists

We’ve been frequent contributors to On Dit over the last three years, contributing art, illustrations, photography and writing. Collectively, we’ve been

It is a great opportunity for me to improve my social and

The role of student radio is to allow you to get out there and

The Union’s student radio programming provides an excellent
opportunity for everyone to share their thoughts on a diverse
