Board members are expected to participate in the various AUU events and activities as well as the monthly board meeting and meetings of various sub-committees. SRC Office Bearers and General Councillors The SRC is the representative body of the AUU, existing to represent students to the University itself, all levels of government and to the wider community. NUS Delegates (7 positions) The National Union of Students is the body representing student interests nationally. Delegates will be invited to attend State and National conferences of NUS and are expected to contribute to the development of policy and action at a State and National level. 4 Student Radio Director (1 position — up to 3 students may nominate to be joint directors) Responsible for the coordination of the Student Radio programs on Radio Adelaide and the coordination and training of students involved in producing programs. On Dit Editor (1 position — up to 3 students may nominate to be joint editors) Responsible for the publication of the AUU’s student newspaper which is published during academic term-time. 5 AUU Board Nominees Claire GRAY–STARCEVIC Zhao (Joe) LU The AUU is a vital organisation on campus, providing an invaluable contribution to campus culture and necessary services to students. I believe that student engagement is indispensable for a healthy and vibrant university community. Loud student voices and strong representation is essential for the rights of students to be upheld and their needs to be met. If elected, I would aim to be a visible board member, available to students and present at union events. I would provide a progressive voice on the union board and work to ensure that the union remains accountable and above all else representative and inclusive of the diverse range of students studying at the University of Adelaide. Hey, my name is Zhao (Joe) Lu, and I’m a PhD candidate in the School of Mechanical Engineering. Rather than giving you the generic “the AUU should be blah blah” idealistic rambling, I will just tell you what I plan to do. Progressive Active Accountable Activate Your AUU! Vote [1] Claire Gray-Starcevic I plan to save (yes save) the AUU from financial ruin. If you have paid attention to the recently released AUU annual report, you would have noticed that the annual deficit is growing at an alarming rate. The deficit for 2013 rose to a staggering amount of $60801 which almost doubles the 2012 deficit of $36989. If this continues, there won’t be an AUU in the near future. Unlike Mr. Abbot, I don’t believe in cutting services to balance the budget. Instead, I will fight for more control of the SSAF, engage with more potential sponsors, and organize more fundraising events to the increase the income of AUU. I am politically neutral and believe that factional politics only serve to distract the AUU from real student needs. I would like to bring political neutrality to the AUU and make sure that the student interests are placed before political interests. 6 Shamblid MALHI Georgina Frances MORPHETT Jenny NGUYEN Gemma PAECH I’m running for the AUU board in 2015 because I believe I can play an important role in ensuring the board continues to expand and deliver crucial university student services along with ensuring a diverse, balanced and fun university experience. The Adelaide University Union offers countless services that students may not even know about. It is an issue that I’d like to address by connecting you to the services which can enhance your university experience Gemma is the Fresh candidate for AUU Board. Fresh want to help rebuild campus culture with more events so your union and SRC are visible. We also want to see the union and SRC more involved in state and national campaigns against the education cuts, and other Federal budget measures that negatively impact students. I know that students want and need efficient and accessible university services and events. As a board director, I commit to being an efficient director, and being approachable for students to voice their concerns and opinions. After all, the AUU exists for you! I believe that I exemplify the AUU values of accessible education, diversity, partnerships and community, professionalism and democracy, and I commit to living by these values as an elected board director. Having been a general councillor on the SRC this year, having sat on other non-university boards, and having worked on policy at state, national and international levels, I have the knowledge and skills required to be a great board director. I know that students want to have the best time at university but this process can be damn expensive! My platform is to increase access to professional services, networking opportunities, regular student socials, cheap meals and exclusive student deals on campuses and in the CBD. The availability and affordability of these essential services positively impact on a student’s wellbeing, which we know is paramount to success at university. In 2015, I want you to experience all that and so much more. I’m running for AUU Board because these services matter, students matter and deserve an innovative candidate who will firmly advocate on their behalf. I will also actively improve the engagement between students, executives and affiliated student organisations to ensure that you can account on your elected body. Bachelor of Law / Commerce The University of Adelaide is a place of great diversity. My campaign for AUU Board will aim to unite the diversity that defines us and make the university experience richer for all students. There is a need to promote for greater social interaction between faculties and with people of all ethnic groups. The initiative lies with the AUU. I hope to be elected this year to the AUU Board. I feel that my experience on the SRC this year and my involvement with constitutional reform puts me in a excellent position to be a Board Director. I believe that students not only need quality education but also an environment and community which supports them. The AUU plays a vital role in providing students with a wide range of support services, opportunities, social events, and fights for students to have a voice. This is why I want to be more involved in the AUU, so that I can play a part in making sure students receive the best support they can. At university, there is the need to deliver cheaper on-campus dining, increase the semester printing quota and increase accessibility to computing suits across campus. These are examples of the small changes that will truly have a significant impact on the wider student population. I am experienced in student advocacy, having served as the Ethno-cultural officer on the SRC in 2014. But thankfully we have seen an incredibly strong fight against the federal government by students which has stopped the government’s reform agenda dead in its tracks. Hi I’m Renjie Du, fifth year engineering and arts student. In 2013 I was Australian international student of the year, and I’m the current board director for the Adelaide University Union, and the president for the multicultural club. The SRC as the student representative body on campus has a central responsibility in defending student rights and interests, whether this is defending public education, or taking a stand against issues that affect everyone. There are numerous social justice questions that confront us today. Our SRC and student movement has a proud tradition of taking up these questions. Next year we need an SRC President that will continue the fight against what the government is doing to our education. I am eager to lead protests against the government, to make sure that we get the best education outcomes. I’m approachable and engaged, in touch with student life and the student issues we face. I’m passionate about supporting students to fulfil their potential. I will be a strong and assertive voice, proactively working hard to guarantee you the best possible student experience. This active engagement in politics and struggle is Left Action’s conception of what the SRC should be doing, and this active engagement by students has echoed through the halls of parliament, pushing back Abbott’s agenda. Unfortunately the scourge of neoliberalism leaves no place untouched. This year we have seen it rear its ugly head within the SRC, with arguments that the SRC should resemble a corporate boardroom more than a thriving democratic student institution that leads and actively involves students in the struggle for a better world. It’s a critical time for students under Abbott. We need an experienced activist at the helm. Vote 1 for Thomas Gilchrist for SRC President. Vote 1 Left Action for all positions. Most of my time in my career has involved championing human rights causes, e.g. through SA Law Society Human Rights Committee, Amnesty, World Vision, and working pro-bono for refugees and charities. I studied Justice through Harvard University and have held executive positions in private and public companies. I am currently the leader of the Adelaide University Democrats. I want the best for our students. I will always speak out against measures against common sense and human decency. I will advocate for any student not satisfied with their experience at this Uni, as well as look after the disadvantaged and disenfranchised. I will take each issue and policy from a pragmatic/common-sense viewpoint with no pre-conceived agenda. Hi, I’m Amelia Kinsman and I’m the Left Action candidate for Queer Officer on the SRC. This Uni should be a safe, progressive space for any LGBTI+ person to be themselves, and must have adequate support networks, both social and professional, to create that safe and progressive space. We especially owe it to those who are scared and vulnerable. As a Gender Studies/History major and a queer-identifying person I’m passionate about queer rights and representation. As Queer officer, I plan to organise LGBTIQ students at Adelaide to come together as interconnected community. There are a number of services at the University that can support queer identifying students and as the Queer Officer, I will work to connect the students who need these services to them. I’m passionate about become Queer Officer because I have suffered a vile homophobic attack, requiring a facial reconstruction through five operations over two years. I will never stop feeling the pain of the bone grafts and titanium around my face; but even more so, the humiliation and degradation of the attack is psychologically stuck on me. The pain is a daily reminder of what we have to deal with and it’s on that basis that I promise that I WILL STAND UP FOR YOU and YOU CAN DEPEND ON ME. I’ve been an international pro-bono human rights lawyer and gay activist for some time, mostly successful due to my undying determination and passion. I will not stop my activism until we have equal rights across the board and that all bigotry is tackled head-on. The Abbott government’s education agenda will disproportionately affect queer students due to the systematic oppression already present in our heteronormative society. I will fight against these cuts, the queerphobia and discrimination in our university, and the oppression of all minorities if I were to be elected. We need a passionate, active SRC to lead students in the struggle against oppression and for SOCIAL JUSTICE. It’s a sad reality that we still live in a queerphobic world and we need to work to change that. From issues such as marriage equality through to bullying in classrooms, we need to organise. At a time when support services are under attack and tertiary education is in danger of becoming so much more exclusive, we need to join with the broader student movement to fight the cuts that will hurt queer students. I’m excited to be running alongside Left Action candidates, passionate people who have been some of the most visible activists on campus standing up to homophobia and transphobia. I want my voice to be your voice and I will aim to do my best represent everyone on the queer spectrum to ensure that we all have a voice. Vote 1 Amelia Kinsman for Queer Officer. I believe the role of Education Officer has never been more critical; we face a government ideologically set on undermining higher education at every opportunity. From the deregulation of fees to the slashing of funding, it seems this government sees students as a soft target. As Education Officer, I would collaborate with a variety of organisations and students to create strong and visible student-run campaigns, showing this government if they want to attack higher education, they will have a fight on their hands. It is vital to campaign publically through rallies and protests but equally important to campaign for quality education at a university level. As a student, I have experienced crowded lecture theatres and tutorials. Tutorials have been cancelled due to inadequate funding and whole courses have been cut with no notice. It appears that we are paying more and receiving less. It’s time to fight for our right to quality education. Progressive Active Accountable Activate Your NUS! As a science student, I am also keenly aware of the lack of women in the higher ranks of some fields. I believe that this gender disparity can lead to a lack of mentorship opportunities for women hoping to pursue further study in those fields. Another serious issue I’m tackling now is the lack of social support for postgraduates. To address this issue, I help started the Adelaide University Postgraduate Society (AUPS). Ultimately, I will aim to ensure that postgraduates are provided with a vibrant and rewarding experience which maximises their professional and academic opportunities. This also entails seeking to challenge any measures which threaten to undermine such opportunities. We are at a moment where we face all sorts of pressures and limitations. IndyGo – putting students first SRC Postgraduate Officer Vote 1 IndyGo 25 Ethno-Cultural Officer Nominees Tracy CHEN Gao HUAIYUAN Apoorv JAISWAL As someone born and raised in India, I strongly feel that students such as me face discrimination in Australia and that the SRC needs to be a body that fights oppression and promotes equality, especially when the government backs up and promotes racist agendas such as the new Islamophobic laws being introduced, disguised as ‘anti-terrorism’. Hi, I’m Tracy. As a student from a culturally diverse background, I can understand how racism affects students’ abilities to participate in university life in a multitude of ways. If elected, I will campaign to raise awareness about racism as a system of oppression and not just the behaviour of individuals and the impact these systems have on people. I will draw attention to intersecting issues affecting culturally and linguistically diverse students such as socio-economic barriers, education and cultural background of parents, how these affect students’ experiences at university, and how such experiences may impact mental and emotional wellbeing. I have helped build anti-racist rallies where people stand in solidarity with Palestine against the horrible genocide carried out by Israel, and refugee rallies, fighting against the Abbott government’s denial of asylum seekers’ basic rights. The deregulation of university fees will hurt all students, especially international students. I and the rest of Left Action are for an SRC which will seek to cease the treatment of these students as cash cows, and fights against the inequality students are subjected to. If elected, I will fight for a SRC that takes on racism and is inclusive of all students regardless of ethnicity or religion. The effects of systemic racism can be invisible to anyone who doesn’t experience them. As students from culturally/ linguistically diverse backgrounds might know, statements such as ‘your English is so good’ are representative of the casual racism we experience on a day-to-day basis. Casual racism has significant effects on the broader perception of people of colour, wellbeing, and contributes to negative individual perceptions of standing and worth in society. I hope to make this a focus of my campaign work. The Left Action team are proud anti-racists and strong supporters of SOCIAL JUSTICE. Vote 1 Apoorv Jaiswal for Ethno-Cultural Officer. Challenges such as parenting, disability, employment, social support and economic hardship are common amongst mature age students and may impact upon successful completion of academic qualifications. I am working with the learning technologies team as a committee member highlighting the need for short training packages for students to better assimilate the My Uni IT system, which connects students to academic, administrative and liaison services. While we are not just our illnesses or disabilities, they can affect all aspects of our lives. Well, to maintain the theme of quoting Liberal cabinet ministers: We must ‘continue to go out onto the streets and protest, and actively encourage the public to support us in our campaign for free education’ - Joe Hockey 1987. A strong National Union of Students is needed to fight this anti-student government. WE should also instigate a High Court challenge to the validity of state public transport services refusing to recognise interstate student concession cards. The liberals will not stop until they have completed their agenda of replicating a US style education system. That is why we must continue with the strategy of mobilising students to pressure the government and university administrations. The mass mobilisations and snap actions against liberal politicians on campuses that I have been involved in have been a great success and made the National Union of Students more relevant that ever. This year I have been actively campaigning on campus by handing out thousands of leaflets, putting up hundreds of posters, giving announcements in lectures and running stalls to promote the education campaign. We need to committed activists to continue this strategy, which is why I am running. Vote 1 Claudia Keogh for NUS Delegate. Vote 1 Left Action for all positions. Vote 1 Viv. 49 The NUS is fundamental in representing undergraduate university students in Australia. Having a strong voice to address the issues we face as a University community will give you the opportunity to make the most of your experience. I have the skills to actively serve as a member of the NUS. From being a College Captain to running the Oaktree Club at the University, I’ve been able to build my advocacy and communication skills to campaign for the changes you want to see. The NUS plays this vital role in providing students with a voice and implementing the change. I think it would be fair to say that over the past twelve months we’ve seen many changes to our university, some not for the best, as a member of the SRC I would ensure these voices are heard, and where possible, ensure the changes our University experience are for the best. Progressive. Active. Accountable. Activate Your SRC Vote [1] Mark Pace for NUS NUS Nominees Gemma PAECH Hannah RUSSELL Mark TAN As a strong supporter of NUS, and an active participant in various interstate conferences hosted by the NUS, Gemma would like to take a more active role in ensuring this organisation performs to the best of its ability as a student representative voice. Hannah is the Fresh candidate for SRC General Secretary. Fresh want to help rebuild campus culture with more events so your union and SRC are visible We also want to see the union and SRC more involved in state and national campaigns against the education cuts and other federal budget measures that will negatively impact students. Fresh wants students to feel safe and supported on campus, and will therefore promote awareness of student support and security services. 50 Yiran (Ian) TAN Australian universities are a place of great diversity. It is important for us to value our differences and the rich culture that defines who we are. My campaign for NUS Delegate will be centered around the need to integrate students of different cultural backgrounds as well as those from different States of Australia. I will promote increased social interaction between Universities, encouraging sporting events and academic competitions. This will be modeled around extracurricular rivalries that exists between most universities in the US and UK. As NUS Delegate, I will also aim to highlight the importance of lowering the cost of education for students. There is a need for government to invest more in tertiary education and to encourage student enrolment. I will push for increased government funding and financial support with the aim of lowering the HECS accumulated by students upon graduation. Vote for change and expect the progress; vote me for NUS Delegate. 51 On Dit Nominees Leighton McDonald-Stuart, Daniel Milburn & Zhuocao Sun Jodie Guidolin, Justin McArthur & Anthony Nocera We’ve been frequent contributors to On Dit over the last three years, contributing art, illustrations, photography and writing. Collectively, we’ve been involved in the production of every issue of the magazine this year and we are ready to step up to the editorship. We’re passionate about the magazine and turning it into the best publication it can possibly be. We think that On Dit needs a shake up. On Dit has been holding onto tradition for far too long. We want it to be more radical, more graphic and we want to take more risks. We want On Dit to be all about what matters to you, and we want to make it something that you want to read and contribute to. On Dit has played a huge role in helping us shape our voices as writers and artists. It has played an integral part in shaping the voices of the students of Adelaide University for eighty-two volumes. Next year, we want it to scream louder than ever. So now it is up to you, voter, lover, chooser of things, person with a pen, to use that pen to tick our names in the box. 2015. 52 Student Radio Nominees Kimberly Adams & Donna Symonds Yang Wang & Matthew Bell My name is Yang Wang. I am an oversea student, studying the Bachelor of media in the University of Adelaide. I had been working as general councillor in SRC , and participated in the debate club in the University of Adelaide. It is a great opportunity for me to improve my social and communication skills and also a challenge for myself. As an international student, I am aware of the issue that faced by Australian domestic students, as well as the added difficulties that international students are experiencing. I will be a strong voice for international and domestic Students at student radio and Uni campus. Hi, I’m Matt Bell and I’m jointly running for the position of Student Radio Director with Ian Begley and Yang Wang. We’re committed to getting the University community engaged with and involved in their student radio; after all, it’s there for you! The role of student radio is to allow you to get out there and make your voice heard. It’s a chance for you to be creative, inquisitive and insightful. The Union’s student radio programming provides an excellent opportunity for everyone to share their thoughts on a diverse range of topics, from politics, news and current affairs to arts, sport and poetry. However, we can’t be complacent about our radio station, and we need a team who is willing to be bold and think outside the square, in keeping student radio fresh and exciting. We are the team who are capable of delivering this. I’d love to hear your thoughts on what you’d like to see from your student radio. I, along with Ian and Yang, will work closely with the entire community to ensure that our student radio is reflective of the talented and dynamic community that we are. We’re here to deliver real Progress for you. 53 Notes 54 Notes ALL POLICY STATEMENTS AND PUBLICITY ARE SUBJECT TO THE CLAUSES OF THE AUU RULES CONCERNING THE CONDUCT OF ANNUAL ELECTIONS, BY-ELECTIONS & REFERENDA.
