Dear Friends and Fellow Dahlia and Chrysanthemum Enthusiasts,
December 2016
With another successful season behind us our preparations for the 2017 Season are well under way so may I
welcome you to this, our new look 96th edition of our Main Catalogue. Thank you to all who supported us with
your custom last year and for the many favourable comments we have received throughout the season. One
of the greatest rewards we have is knowing that the Dahlias and Chrysanthemums we supply, whether for
showing or simply growing for the garden, give so much pleasure, not only to the people who grow them but
also to the neighbours who walk past and admire the wonderful display and late season colour that they bring!
We know that because of the many letters and photographs we receive. It is also a pleasure to hear first-hand
from the people we meet at Shows and events as well as comments on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
The only show we exhibited at in 2016 was Harrogate Autumn Show where we were once again awarded a
Premier Gold Award for our display of Dahlias. This show is always a highlight of the year for us as it gives
us a great opportunity to meet as many you as we can face to face. I also get a good chance to look around
the show benches to see if there is anything new and exciting to include in our catalogue in future years. In
the Dahlia world, it was very encouraging to see the strength and depth in the Novice sections of the shows
at both Harrogate and Wisley. There were some very good exhibits at both and we expect to see some of the
entrants competing at Championship level in future years.
This year we are privileged and honoured to offer several new varieties, all having the potential to do well on
the show bench or in the garden. Josudi Hercules, one of a few long awaited new Miniature Cactus varieties
from Peter Greenway, has just been awarded a Silver Medal at the NDS Exhibition Trials. This is a very free
flowering variety and alongside Josudi Telstar, another of Peter’s seedlings, will make a useful addition to
this increasingly popular section. Rod Fox, very well known in the Chrysanthemum world, has also allowed
us to release 3 more of his raisings including “Rosie Lyttle,” a pink double spray which he has named after
his Granddaughter, so he obviously thinks very highly of it. There are many more included throughout the
catalogue, highlighted with a ♦ and pictures bordered in red. For the first time, we have been able to include
illustrations of ALL the varieties we offer within the following pages and we do hope you like the new look.
Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to wish you a successfull 2017 and we look foward to supplying
your requirements for the forthcoming season. HAPPY GROWING!
Yours faithfully,
P.S. Many of you will remember that last year we introduced Sheval Megan (SD). Thanks to everyone who
purchased this variety, we were able to hand over a cheque for £1000 to Terry to pass onto the charity for
Cystic Fibrosis.
FOR TERMS AND CONDITIONS PLEASE REFER TO PAGE 26.
THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF A NURSERYMAN
Published just after his 90th Birthday and the year before he
sadly passed away, Morton Stanley "Stan" Hall tells the story of
Halls of Heddon, drawing from his and other family members'
diaries, letters, jottings and memories. He recounts how, starting
soon after the end of the First World War, the family business
survived highs, lows and family tragedy to become one of the
country's leading Dahlia and Chrysanthemum nurseries.

DAHLIA CLASSIFICATION
The classification of Dahlias in this catalogue is based on the NDS Classified List 2015, 32nd Edition. The “Classified Directory
and Judging Rules” is available from the National Dahlia Society and is free to new members. Some varieties included in this
catalogue are either not yet classified or are no longer included (prefixed U). Where this is the case we have included them in
what we believe to be the most appropriate section after trial at the nursery or from historical information.
We offer Dahlias in the following forms: POT TUBERS AVAILABLE DECEMBER TO FEBRUARY
Compact tubers grown in a 9cm pot and ideal for exhibitors or keen growers who have the facilities (e.g heated greenhouse or
propagator) to produce and propagate their own stock. We strongly advise unpacking on arrival and, if necessary, storing in a
cool, frost free environment until required for setting away. A minimum of 50°F(10°C) is required for propagation. Water tubers
sparingly until growth is evident. Early ordering is advisable. Some varieties already in short supply are only available through
our website where tuber availability is updated regularly.
SPECIAL NOTE. Any tuber which fails to grow must be returned to us by March 30th. We will then either replace with tubers
or mini plants (if available), supply a credit note or refund. No action can be taken unless a tuber is returned.
MINI PLANTS AVAILABLE END OF MARCH TO END OF MAY
The most popular form, these are strong rooted cuttings for those customers who have the facilities for potting up and growing
on under glass (minimum 50°F, 10°C). On receipt, they should be unpacked immediately and potted on into a 9-12cm pot
using a good quality compost. Be careful to avoid over watering, particularly after potting. We will make every effort to supply
during the period requested but orders must be in the office at least FIVE WEEKS BEFORE required as cuttings are taken to
order. No mini plant orders (unless for our special collections) can be accepted after 20th April.
GARDEN READY PLANTS AVAILABLE FOR 2 WEEKS COMMENCING EARLY JUNE
These larger plants, grown in a 7cm paper pot, are “garden ready” after allowing a few days to get over the journey! They are
popular with customers who do not have the facilities for growing on, but do however come at an additional cost of £2.00 per
plant on top of the mini plant price. Orders must be in the office by the 20th April as cuttings are taken and plants are grown to
order. Please Note we are unable to supply Garden Ready Dahlias to destinations outside of mainland UK.

COLLERETTE
Collerette Dahlias have flowers with a single outer ring of generally flat petals (ray florets) with a ring of smaller petals (florets)
forming a collar. The open centred flowers are hugely attractive to all types of pollinators. These make an excellent addition to

COLLERETTE, WATERLILY AND BEE and BUTTERFLY COLLECTIONS
We feel that this group of Dahlias is one of the best for using in herbaceous borders and for general planting. The
waterlily types make excellent cut flowers whilst the Collerettes are extremely free flowering and are particularly
good for attracting butterflies and bees into the garden. Both types can be ‘stopped’ when 5-7 pairs of leaves have
developed and all the resulting stems allowed to flower. Disbudding of these is only necessary if growing for exhibition
or if they are needed for cutting.
The following collections are of OUR CHOICE from this catalogue and supplied in a
wide colour range with a label for each variety.

SMALL AND MINIATURE DECORATIVES
This section includes some very popular exhibition varieties but many varieties make good cut flowers and fit well into borders.
Small flowered decoratives usually produce flowers 100-150mm (4-6") across. Miniature flowered decoratives are usually
between 50 and 100mm (2-4") across. For exhibition purposes they must not exceed 170mm and 115mm respectively.

Popular exhibition varieties and good garden and cut flower types are included in this section of “spiky” Dahlias. Small
varieties produce flowers from 100-150mm (4-6") in diameter but for exhibition they must not exceed 170mm. Miniature
flowers can be up to 115mm (4"), and must not exceed this if showing.

POMPOM AND BALL DAHLIA COLLECTION
Pompons are dainty flowers that only reach about 50mm (2”) across. Ball dahlias have flowers up to 150mm (6”) across.
Both types can be ‘stopped’ when 5-7 pairs of leaves have developed and all the resulting stems allowed to flower.
Disbudding is only necessary if growing for exhibition or for cut flowers as this gives longer stems.
The following collections are of OUR CHOICE from this catalogue and supplied in a wide colour range with a label for
each variety.

CHRYSANTHEMUMS
THIS CATALOGUE CANCELS ALL PREVIOUS CATALOGUES. PRICES QUOTED APPLY UNTIL 30th JUNE 2017.
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE ORDERING.
Chrysanthemums are supplied as strong rooted cuttings grown in individual cells ready for potting into at least a 9cm pot and
are available from February to Early June. Orders for other than our special collections must be received before April 1st.
We regret we are unable to accept telephone orders and would kindly request that all orders are submitted on the order form
provided or placed through our secure website at www.hallsofheddon.co.uk
Please indicate clearly on the order form when plants are required bearing in mind that a minimum of 5 weeks notice is
required as cuttings are taken to order. We would suggest the following guidelines to help you determine when it is best for
you to receive your plants depending on the facilities you have available:
HEATED GREENHOUSE - from early February onwards.
COLD GREENHOUSE - not before mid-March in the South and early April in the North.
COLD FRAME - not before early April in the South and mid-end April in the North
NO PROTECTION - not before end April in the South and early May in the North.
PAYMENT WITH ORDER PLEASE: This enables us to minimise clerical work in our busy season and keep prices down.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please ensure all cheques and postal orders are made payable to “W. N. Hall & Sons Ltd”. Due to
bank charges, we regret that any cheques returned to us unpaid will incur a £15.00 charge. Credit/Debit cards will be charged
on receipt of order. MINIMUM order value of £10.00 excluding carriage and packing.
SUBSTITUTES: In the event of a variety being sold out, we reserve the right to substitute a similar variety unless specified as
"No Substitutes" on the order form.
ORDER DEADLINES: All of our plants are rooted to order with a minimum 5 week period being needed from orders
being booked in and plants being despatched. We are therefore unable to accept orders for plants, other than our Special
Collections, after the following dates: Chrysanthemums -1st April, Dahlia Mini Plants and Garden Ready Dahlias - 20th April.
Stocks of Tubers are limited so early ordering is advisable.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: All orders will be acknowledged by post and an order number given. This number should be retained
until the order is completed and should be quoted in the event of any correspondence concerning the order.
Please check that we have your details recorded correctly to ensure you receive your plants safely. Your acknowledgment will
also give an estimated delivery period based on facilities available and date required as per the information you provide on
the order form. We will make every effort to supply plants during the period requested but delays may occur in periods of high
demand.
CARRIAGE AND PACKING CHARGES TO ALL UK DESTINATIONS (INSURED).

Dahlia Mini Plants and Chrysanthemums: £6.95 regardless of the number of plants ordered. Sent 1st Class Post
Garden Ready Dahlias: £6.95 regardless of the number of plants ordered. Sent 1st Class Post
Please Note: Due to different availability periods we cannot combine the above so separate carriage charges will apply as
they will effectively be treated as separate orders.
SUGGESTED STOPPING DATES
For those of you that are showing it is important to have an idea of "stopping" dates. To assist exhibitors in timing their blooms
we have now included suggested stopping dates for each variety within their descriptions. These dates are intended as a
guide only and are based on aiming for show dates of early/mid September and early/mid November in the North East of
England. Adjustments should be made for earlier or later shows.
Due to longer day length, growers in the south of the country should delay these suggested dates by up to 4 weeks whilst
more northerly growers than ourselves would need to stop up to 2 weeks or so earlier. As an extremely rough guide delay
stopping by 1 week for every 150 miles south of Newcastle and bring forward by 1 week for every 150 miles further north.
If you are not aiming to grow for shows then these stopping dates become much less critical with a delay in stopping only
resulting in a corresponding delay in flowering. The serious grower will keep their own records from year to year to assist them
in timing for shows.
Please Note: Depending on when your order is received and the period you have requested delivery of your order, some of
these suggested dates may have been missed. This will not affect the plant, but may result in some varieties flowering later
than indicated.
When it comes to late flowering varieties you will see that most have 2 stopping dates suggested. Exhibitors will tend to
flower on 2nd crown buds as this gives the plant a longer growing season, a bigger root system and therefore generally better
flowers. Perfectly good results when growing for pleasure can however be achieved on later delivered plants by just using the
later date given for the 2nd stop.
QUANTITY DISCOUNTS FOR CHRYSANTHEMUMS
Apply only when 3 or more of the SAME variety are ordered.
SPECIAL DELIVERY SERVICE: We are able to offer an optional special delivery service for an additional £5 per order.
Please ensure you provide a contact telephone number we can reach you on between 9am and 5pm so we can arrange
delivery as this service requires a signature on receipt.
COLLECTION OF ORDERS AND PERSONAL CALLERS: Customers can collect their orders at either our West Heddon or
Ovington Nurseries (see order form) in which case there will be no carriage charge. We will advise when the order is ready
for collection. We will also have a range of Chrysanthemums and Dahlias available in our plant sales area from April and May
respectively.

Late October to December flowering subject to cultural practices and stopping dates and needing a heated or at least frost
free greenhouse. Generally incurving flowers although not as tightly balled as the true incurves. For exhibition purposes
restrict to 2 or 3 blooms per plant, more if just for cut flower. Normally grown in pots in a soil-based compost outside and
moved into the greenhouse just before buds break into colour. Most varieties are normally flowered on 2nd crown buds

LARGE AND MEDIUM EXHIBITION BLOOMS
These stars of the late Chrysanthemum shows will generally flower late October – November subject to cultural practices
and stopping dates. Grown in pots they would usually be brought into the greenhouse from September to protect the
potentially enormous blooms during their development. It is important to be able to provide good air circulation to prevent
blooms damping off. Most varieties are normally flowered on 2nd crown buds (stopped twice) and grown no more than 2
up for exhibition. NCS Classification:- 1=Large Exhibition, 2= Medium Exhibition

SPRAY CHRYSANTHEMUM - GENERAL INFORMATION
Flowering from August to October these are relatively easy to grow and make excellent cut flowers. All varieties require only
to be “stopped” (the growing tip pinched out) at about 15-20cms (6-8”) when they are growing strongly and all the resulting
growth tied in. Unlike the blooms, no disbudding is required but if you are growing for exhibition only 5 or 6 buds should be
allowed to develop at the top of each stem These should be selected for evenness in height, development and spacing with
the aim of having as even a head of flowers as possible. We have given each variety a suggested stopping date shown in ( )
for flowering mid-September in the North of England.

Flowering naturally from September through to December depending on variety, these are ideal for growing in pots, either
1 plant to a 15cm pot or 3 plants to a 25-40cm pot or at the front of borders, particularly the September flowering varieties.
All will benefit from at least one pinching out of the growing tips to produce bushier, more dome shaped plants with more
flowers. Later flowering varieties may need some protection though we have had them flowering outside in late November in a
sheltered, sunny spot. (22=September flowering, 12=October, November flowering.)

KOREAN, RUBELLUMS AND HARDY GARDEN SPRAYS
PLEASE NOTE: NOT AVAILABLE BEFORE MID-LATE MARCH.
The Rubellum and Korean types listed below are ideal for the herbaceous border bringing an abundance of autumn colour,
with some varieties flowering well into the winter! They are also an invaluable late season source of nectar and act as a
magnet for Butterflies and Bees. The plants can grow quite bushy so need plenty of space but are often strong enough to
support themselves. We have found them to be very hardy surviving outside with no protection and flowering very freely year
after year. We are indebted to Judy Barker who holds the National Collection of Koreans, Rubellums and Hardy Sprays for
supplying stock of some of these varieties.

Our Sales Area in the Autumn
Each year we welcome many visitors to our West Heddon
Nursery to view the Dahlia and Chrysanthemum fields planted
with more that 15,000 plants in over 500 varieties. The best
time to call and see them growing and flowering is from the
end of August to early October.
Don't forget our Nurseries are open all year round with an
extensive range of garden plants available, many being home
grown. A good range of composts and garden sundries is also
stocked along with seeds and bulbs.
At our Ovington Nursery you can enjoy browsing through the
recently planted herbaceous borders in a pleasant setting
with superb views over the Tyne Valley. A wide range of home
grown plants are available all year round.
Thank you to everyone that came to our NGS Open Day
in Sebtember where we raised £1500, our best total yet.
Although our fields will be open throughout the flowering
season we currently do not have a date for an open day next
year.
