1. Is there any risk-free alternative to tattoo?
2. What equipment is used?
3. What are the motives for getting a tattoo?
4. What is tattoo ink made from?
5. Is getting a tattoo dangerous?
6. What are the most popular tattoo designs?
7. How old is the tattooing tradition?
8. Can tattoos be removed?
A. Tattoos are surprisingly popular in different parts of the globe. The oldest tattooed person, the
so-called Iceman, is a frozen mummy found in the Alps in 1991. The frozen man, aged more
than 5000 years, has 57 tattoos! The scientists think that they were created with some sharp
instruments like thorns, and ash from fireplace was used instead of ink. There's also a theory that
Iceman's tattoos were made for medical reasons rather than for any other, reason.
B. Medical tattoos mark the places where acupuncture needles need to be used, however, that
reason for getting a tattoo is rare. Tattooing for religious and spiritual reasons happens much
more often. Soldiers and sailors get tattoos in memory of their battles and journeys. Some people
tattoo the names of those they love, and some get tattoos for no reason at all, just because they
think it's cool.
C. There are lots of tattooing techniques. Some tribes in Africa make cuts on the body and rub
ash into them. Tattooists may also work with sharpened sticks or animal bones — the procedure
is painful and not at all hygienic. In modern studios electric machines are usually used. They
have one or more needles that quickly go in and out of the skin. The machine has ink containers
and the ink gets into the skin via the needles. For safety reasons the needles should only be used
once.
D. In the past, tattoo ink was made from tree bark, ash and coal dust. Later, pen ink was often
used. Today, the inks produced by factories are usually made of metal salts and metal oxides.
Heavy metals are used for colouring too: cadmium gives red and orange shades, aluminum —
green and violet, cobalt — blue, titanium — white. There's no need to say that heavy metals may
cause allergies and some far more serious diseases, cancer included.
E. Parents may get outraged by their children's desire for tattoos and they've got good reasons to
get panicky — apart from ink related risks, getting tattoos is associated with the risk of
infection. Anything from skin infections to tuberculosis and even AIDS can be transmitted via
the instruments. If the tattooist ignores strict hygienic requirements, like using fresh ink for each
session, changing gloves after each stage of tattooing or disinfecting the furniture, the client may
catch a very serious disease.
F. Another reason against permanent tattoos is... their permanent character. You may like it now
but people tend to change their preferences. A safe alternative is a temporary tattoo which lasts
for only a few weeks. Their main advantage is that the skin is not damaged — the tattoo artist
just applies henna on it. This type of tattoos is popular with fashion models who care for their
bodies and don't want them to get damaged.
G. The actress Amy Taylor says that she got her tattoo when she was sixteen. She thought it was
cool, but several years later the tattoo became a nuisance. Amy wanted to get it removed. She
believed that modern technologies like laser treatment could do it easily but the doctors warned
her that the tattoo wouldn't be fully removed anyway. The treatment is usually long, expensive
and rather painful — getting the tattoo is much easier.

The Isle of Man
In the Irish Sea about 20 miles away from the UK you will find a beautiful island. This is the
Isle of Man. The people of the island are called Manx and they speak the Manx language. The
island occupies a mid-point in the Irish Sea and the British Isles – right between England,
Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
The scenery of the Isle is varied. There are ranges of hills with green valleys between them,
there are sandy beaches in the north which contrast with the rocky cliffs along the coasts. The
island's only mountain is slightly over 600 metres high. An old legend says that from its top on
clear days you can see six kingdoms: the island itself, Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales and
Heaven.
The Isle of Man has the oldest parliament in the world. It is called the Tynwald and it has
met regularly since 979. The Tynwald usually meets in the capital of the country. However, for
one day every summer the Manx parliament
gathers in a small village to celebrate Tynwald Day. It is the only day of the year when
parliament is held in the open air. On this day government officials read a summary of all the
laws that have been passed during the year in both the English and the Manx languages. There is
entertainment before and after the ceremony and it is a real community event. In addition to that,
an open air market is organised and different concerts are held in the evening. At the conclusion,
the Manx national anthem is played and there is a firework display.
Another thing that attracts tourists to the Isle of Man is its rich and unique culture. Any
visitor to the island will be particularly fascinated by the legends, folklore and the ancient
traditions that are still kept alive today. Most tourists are happy to participate in the folk
programmes.
In Manx mythology, the island’s name comes from the name of a Celtic sea god. He ruled
the kingdom and protected the land from invaders by covering the island with mist and thick fog.
The island is also reputedly home to fairies who are very special. The Manx fairies are described
as small and human-like. They wearred caps and green jackets and are naughty and wicked.
There's even a bridge called Fairy Bridge. Those who cross it are advised to say “hello
fairies” in order to get good fortune. If the person doesn’t greet the fairies, the fairies will
become angry with him and may play a nasty trick on him. Some people go further in trying to
pay their respects to the ‘little people’. They do not just simply say hello, they also leave
messages and gifts at the side of the road.
If you love reading about King Arthur and his knights, then a must-see place is Peel Castle. It
was constructed in the 11th century by the Vikings and has a fascinating history. It is believed
that Peel Castle was the location of Avalon – the legendary island where King Arthur’s sword
was made and where King Arthur was taken after being wounded.

A5) Australia once had close ties with Great Britain. Until fifty years ago, almost all Australians were of
British or Irish origin. But after World War II more than two million people arrived from Europe. New
Australians, as they were known, were from Greece, Germany and Italy. Mass migration has changed
Australia into a multicultural society. Today, people of Anglo-Irish origin are a minority. Many recent
immigrants are from South East Asia, the Philippines and China .
B1) Australia's prosperity has been founded on its natural resources. It produces almost every mineral from
gold to uranium. Traditionally, Australia was a farming country and its wealth was founded on wool, cattle and
wheat. It is still a major exporter of food, making it the breadbasket of Asia. Agriculture and mining, however,
employ comparatively few people. Tourism is now Australia's largest industry, employing 6% of the
population. More than three million visitors come to the country each year.
C4) In spite of the importance of the bush to Australian folklore, 90% of Australians live in cities. Almost
everyone lives within a few kilometres of the sea and of the ocean. The beaches are used in same way as parks:
families have picnics, people of all ages jog, play volleyball, swim or just walk. There is great interest in water
sports like water skiing, surfing, swimming and sailing. Every city has tennis courts, allowing half a million
people play competitively.
D6) The Dutch were the first Europeans to see Australia, in the early seventeenth century, but they found no
opportunities to settle or trade. English explorer James Cook landed near Sydney 160 years later and claimed it
for Britain. But still no one could think what to do with it. The American Revolution provided a solution.
America had been used Australia as a dumping ground for criminals, mostly the unfortunate poor from cities
created during the industrial revolution.
E2) Australians used to live on a diet of lamb and potatoes. But with such a variety of climates and with so
many ethic groups, the Australian diet has changed dramatically. Cities like Melbourne and Sydney are proud
of their huge range of ethnic restaurants and multicultural cuisine, ranging from Italian to Tibetan. The
barbecue is a national institution. It is an informal event for people and there is nothing more refreshing than a
swim before eating fruit, fresh salads, and steaks.

Halloween
Halloween dates back to an ancient Celtic festival. The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the
area ofIreland, the United Kingdom and northern France, celebrated their new year on November
1. This day showed that the summer was over and winter had come. Because of the cold and
darkness, winter was associated with human death.
Celts believed that on Halloween night the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. With their help,
the Druids or Celtic priests, could predict the future. It was important because people depended
on the natural world which was dangerous and changeable. They wanted to know what their life
would be like in the next year.
For this event the Druids built big bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals.
It was a gift to the Celtic gods. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes made of animal
heads and skins. They sang, danced and listened to the stories the Druids told them. When the
celebration was over, they went home and brought burning pieces of wood with them. They lit
their fires and hoped it would ensure good fortune and protect the family during the winter.
The first celebrations of Halloween in America were public events. Neighbours got together to
celebrate the harvest and tell each other stories of the dead. They also sang and danced. By the
middle of the nineteenth century, these autumn festivals were common, but Halloween was not
yet celebrated everywhere in the country.
In the second half of the nineteenth century, lots of immigrants started coming to America. They
helped to make the celebration of Halloween a popular national event. Americans began to dress
up in frightening costumes and go from house to house asking for food or money. The most
popular characters were witches, ghosts, and vampires. Everyone tried to look as ugly and scary
as possible.
Halloween is closely associated with the Jack-o’-lantern, a pumpkin with a candle inside that
shines through the holes to make a horrible face. Most people think that the Jack-o’-lantern is an
American tradition. However, the original Jack-o’-lantern was not a pumpkin but a man who,
according to the old Irish legend played a trick on the devil himself. He was punished for that
and was accepted neither to heaven nor to hell. The Irish people shared the legend with the
Americans and showed them how to make Jack-o’-lantern out of the pumpkin.
By the 1930s, Halloween had been celebrated with parades, town-wide parties and lots of other
entertainment. Later a new tendency appeared. By the 1950s, Halloween had changed into a
holiday directed mainly at children. On that evening children in costumes travel from house to
house in order to ask for treats (such as some sweets, a small present or a few coins) with the
question “Trick or treat?” The trick is a threat (usually not working) to perform mischief on the
owner of the house if no treat is given. “Trick or treat?” has become a traditional practice on
Halloween in many countries.
