Chairman’s Corner
Scholars tell their stories
First, I have some exciting news to share. As you can
see from the announcement on this page, the Warren Cherry Scholarship Fund has received a gift of
$100,000 from the Lewis-Sebring Family Foundation.
That represents fully 10 percent of the goal we have
set to raise $1 million. We learned of this extraordinary gift on Thanksgiving eve, and we’re still pinching
ourselves. I want to extend my personal gratitude to
Chuck Lewis and Penny Sebring for this magnificent
gesture of support for the Cherry cause.
Now on to other news. Thanks to co-chairs Bill
Bridges, Jeff Doman, Joe Keitel, John Powell, Bob
Reece, Bart Rocca and the other members of the Golf
Committee for making our 23rd annual Golf Outing
the most successful ever.
Thanks as well to co-chairs Timon Jandora and Rita
McKissic and the entire Book Dramatization Committee for a lovely evening, to Barbara Rinella for a thrilling performance, and to Beth and Jeff Scales for opening their beautiful home to us on October 5.
Special thanks to WCSF founding member and
long-time treasurer Steve Strauss as he leaves the Cherry board. At the same time I want to welcome Anne
Bodine, who is joining the board for the first time.
As always, my heartfelt thanks to everyone on our
outstanding board, and to our community of friends.
I invite you to join us for our next Award Dinner
on April 30, 2017, and to next year’s golf tournament
scheduled for June 24, 2017.
I should point out that even during these challenging economic times, the Cherry Scholarship Fund has
expanded to include part-time and graduate students.
We need your help so we can continue our work of investing in the education of our youth. I sincerely hope
you will consider making a contribution to the fund.
I think it’s important to note that several Cherry
Scholarship recipients are now teaching our future
leaders. Without that scholarship, their dream might
never have become a reality. Thank you in advance for
your kind support.
With the application process for Cherry
scholarships under way, we asked two former scholars to talk about their experience.
Alanna Williams received a Cherry scholarship in 2013 and again in 2016. Now in her
senior year, she is majoring in learning and
education studies at the University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign. She traveled recently
to Italy to study at an early childhood school .
“Without the scholarship and the kind
and generous people who support the Cherry Scholarship Fund, this study abroad trip
may not have been possible,” she said.“I wish
to find out what makes the Reggio Emilia approach to learning and teaching so effective.
I want to be able to implement those same
Alanna Williams
effective teaching styles for low-income and
minority students back in my community.”
She has decided to stay on at U of I to pursue a master’s degree in a program that combines curriculum and instruction with entrepreneurship.
“Since my first year as a Cherry scholar, it was like I joined a family. My
extended Cherry Scholarship family has shared in my triumphs and tribulations,” Alanna said.“If it was not for the Cherry scholarship, I may have
had to take a break during my undergraduate career to work full time in
order to pay for my schooling. Also, the network of support the Cherry
Scholarship family offered me is extraordinary.”
Reflecting on her experience with the Cherry organization,Alanna said,
“Many times, we doubt ourselves. We sometimes feel like we are not smart
enough, not deserving, not worthy enough and not good enough. We
might even say,‘There’s no way they’ll choose me.’ I’ve felt like that myself,
and I said the same thing. Now as a two-time recipient myself, I’d say to
students who are considering applying for a Cherry Scholarship: You do
deserve this opportunity, you are worthy of a chance. Go for it!”
Alanna added,“A few weeks before my trip to Italy, I received an amazing gift from a Cherry board member, with a gift card that read,‘You never walk alone.’ With the Warren

A Very Happy Thanksgiving!
The officers and board of the Warren Cherry Scholarship Fund offer our heartfelt thanks to the Lewis-Sebring Family Foundation for
its Thanksgiving gift of $100,000. This unexpected and extraordinarily generous contribution will enable us to significantly advance
our mission of supporting Evanston Township High School graduates who wish to pursue a degree in education or youth work.
Our Thanks…

Book dramatization
takes flight
An enthusiastic crowd filled the home of hosts Beth and Jeff Scales on October 5 to enjoy the 2016 book dramatization.
This year, 80 attendees witnessed Barbara Rinnella’s stirring interpretation
of the life of Beryl Markham, based on Paula McLain’s bestseller Circling the
Sun. Markham was born in England, grew up in Kenya and went on to become
the first woman to fly solo across the
Atlantic Ocean from east to west.
