POWERFUL WAY WE REMEMBERING THE ENTRUSTS US ALL CAN LIVING INTO Debrief questions about Spiritual Works of Mercy Instruct the Ignorant: It’s important that we take ownership of knowing our faith. What ways have you found work for you to learn your faith? What is one practical way that you could help a friend or another person learn about faith? What is one area or topic of faith that you would like to learn more about? Counsel the Doubtful: Can you think of a time when you doubted? Have any of your friends asked you about your faith? How did it feel to explain about your faith or perhaps justify your faith? Has someone asked you for advice? Did what you believe help form your answer? Admonish the sinner: What does “admonish” mean? (reprimand, tell off) Can you think of a time when somebody else unfairly judged you? How did that feel? Can you think of a time when you judged somebody? What was the basis on which you made that judgement? If someone has genuinely done something wrong how can you correct that person? (Don’t be arrogant – show understanding but do state what needs to change). Comfort the afflicted: What do we mean by the term afflicted? (distressed, troubled) Who do you know who is troubled? (friends, family – people in the wider community eg homeless, refugees etc) What can you do to comfort/help those who are afflicted? Are there times when you have been the afflicted? If yes, what have others done to comfort you? Forgive offences willingly: What grudges or burdens are you holding? Can you let these go or do you need others to forgive you? Think of a time when you said sorry. How was that for you? Who got the greater benefit … you or the person who you said sorry to? Have you ever been in the situation where another person said sorry to you but it wasn’t authentic? How did that feel? Have you ever done that to somebody else? What Church sacrament speaks of forgiveness? (Penance/Confession/Reconciliation) Bearing wrongs patiently: Often when somebody does something minor that hurts us we can blow this up out of all proportion. Can you think of a time when you have done that? Who got hurt the most – you or the other person? Can you think of a time when you were frustrated by another person? What strategies did you use to let go of that frustration? (Talk it through with somebody, take a helicopter view of the situation, talk to God about the frustration). We often think of wrongs as being between two people but there are times Praying for the living and the dead There are lots of different ways to pray. What is your favourite way of praying? Have you experienced the grief of having someone you love or know die? Did you pray for that person and/or their family/loved ones? Who are the living people that you pray for regularly? If there was one new way of praying for the living and the dead that you would like to adopt what would that be?
