Read these sentences together: This is a ruler. This ruler measures 12 inches. Twelve inches equals
one foot.
1/4 is one fourth or one quarter.
1/2 is one half
3/4 is three fourths or three quarters.
Read these sentences together: This is Joe. Joe measures Molly. Molly measures five feet
six inches tall. Six inches is one half of one foot. Molly is five and a half feet tall. Her height is 5’6”. What
is your height?
Read these sentences together: This is Alan, Bob and Carl. They are tall. Bob is taller
than Alan. Carl is taller than Bob. Carl is the tallest boy. Bob is shorter than Carl. Alan is the shortest boy.
Write the name of the boys above their pictures.
Questions about your family. Answer orally.

Teacher: Draw a clock face on the board. Have the students say all the numbers on the clock face.
Write one o’clock on the board. Draw the hour hand. Draw the minute hand. The hour hand is
shorter than the minute hand. There are 60 minutes in one hour. Explain o’clock. O’clock means
by the clock. Then have them say 1 o’clock, 2 o’clock, etc. all the way around the clock. Explain
AM and PM. Look at the clocks on page 18. Talk about what time these clocks show. Show 1:15,
1:30, 1:45. Repeat with the other numbers, drawing the hands and asking them to say the time.
Read these sentences together.
This class begins at ten o’clock. This class ends at 12 o’clock. Twelve o’clock in the day is called noon.
Twelve o’clock at night is called midnight. It is the middle of the night.

5. The sun sets in late afternoon. We call this sunset.
6. Evening is from sunset to bedtime.
7. It is dark at night.
8. Midnight is at 12 AM.

Fay: It is 4:30. Is it time to go?

Sheila: I like to stay up late. I go to bed after midnight. I don’t work. I can sleep late every morning.
Susan: I saw a pretty sunrise this morning. The sky was pink. The sun was an orange ball.
Denise: I slept late. I did not see the sunrise.
Joan: My watch stopped. What time is it?
Sara: It is noon.
Joan: I am hungry. I eat at noon. I will go to lunch now.
Sara: I will stay here. I will answer the phones.
Wanda: I woke at midnight. I heard noises outside. I was afraid.
Tim: What was the noise?
Wanda: It was just a dog. The dog turned over a trash can.
Jane: The sky is beautiful at sunset. It is purple and orange.
Sandra: I like evening best. I like to see the city lights come on.
James: I am hungry. Do you want dinner? I will cook at my house.
Jan: I have a meeting this evening. I am sorry I cannot come for dinner.
James: Please come tomorrow evening.
