A Letter From Our President and CEO
Happy New Year! Can you
believe 2017 is here? Have you
started thinking up your New
Year’s resolutions? One
important resolution that
should be on everyone’s list is
to stay healthy.
Russ Barksdale Jr., MHA,
Physical activity is one of the
FACHE
most important things you can
do for your body and your mind. If you aren’t
physically active already, start slow. For example, start
by attending our Gentle Chair Yoga classes at the
Residents’ Center on Mondays and Wednesdays. From
there, add in an aquatics class to strengthen muscles in
our therapy pool or a SilverSneakers Stability class to
help with balance.
If you are more advanced in your physical fitness, try
Tee Barlow’s Aquatic Boot Camp or Advanced Tone &
Stretch classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. You could
also mix it up by attending a Line Dancing class every
other Thursday or a Zumba class on Tuesdays.
Also important to health is how you are eating. If
you need a healthy option, try out Club Friendship’s
new salad bar and protein smoothies.
Another resolution might be to try something new. If
this is on your list, your Activities Director, Jessica
Lewis, has some great activities planned including a
Painting Class led by fellow resident Carolyn Trudgen,
a Creative Writing Club with Janet Densmore, and this
month’s Book Club on The Great Gatsby. See your
Activities Calendar for more details!
Whatever your New Year’s Resolutions are, we hope
that this is the start to a great year at Friendship!

An Interview With
Resident Services:
Ken Mowbray
What are your
responsibilities at
Friendship?
I am mainly
responsible for
growth in our
Ken Mowbray,
independent
Assistant
living apartments
Director of
Campus
as well as in our
Admissions
assisted living. I
will meet with potential
residents and/or their families
that contact us about getting
more information about our
service and living arrangements.
Once they move in, my
responsibility is to make sure
they are enjoying their new
home and their needs are
being met.
What are your goals for
Friendship?
My goal is to continue to
“grow” Friendship. Many people
in our community are still not
aware of all that Friendship has
to offer. Once I share with them
all that Friendship offers, it is
difficult for them to not call
Friendship “home”.
Where is your office located?
My office is located in the
Resident Center just outside of
the Chapel entrance.
What kinds of issues can you
help residents with?
I look at myself as a resource
to our residents. I am open to
being approached with just
about any issue (Continued
next column)
(Continued) that may arise
like maintenance issues, resident
concerns, etc.
What is your favorite part
about working at Friendship?
People—I enjoy working
closely with our current
residents as well as new
prospects that come our way.
Moving is often a difficult
decision, not only physically,
but mentally.
My goal is to get to know
them and what is currently
going on in their lives; help
them to relax and provide peace
of mind as we go through the
journey of finding a new home
together.
What are your favorite
things to do outside of
Friendship?
My passion is my family. My
wife, Candy, and I have been
married for 22 years. We have 2
daughters, Abbi, age 17, and
Sarah, age 13.
The girls are very active in
soccer with their travel team and
playing for their schools. Most
of our time is spent at their
games/tournaments.
I am very active in my church.
I have been the sound
technician at First Church of
God since I was 14 years old (31
years) and currently serve as our
church Treasurer. I appreciate
and enjoy spending time with
my church family.
Zumba Gold Class
January Book Club
We are now offering a Zumba
class on Tuesdays at 2:00 pm.
Zumba combines a
Latin-inspired dance workout
with a party-like atmosphere.
Zumba Gold builds
cardiovascular health by
challenging the heart and
working the muscles of the hips,
legs and arms with dance moves.
This class is great for all ages
and dance experience is not
required.
This month’s book for book
club will be “The Great Gatsby”
by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The Great
Gatsby is a 1925 novel that
follows a cast of characters living
in the fictional town of West Egg
on prosperous Long Island in
the summer of 1922.
The story primarily concerns
the young and mysterious
millionaire Jay Gatsby and his
dreamy passion and obsession
for the beautiful former
debutante Daisy Buchanan.
Considered to be Fitzgerald’s
masterwork, The Great Gatsby
explores themes of decadence,
idealism, and social upheaval,
creating a portrait of the Jazz
Age or the Roaring Twenties that
has been described as a
cautionary tale regarding the
American Dream.
Book Club will be held on
Wednesday, January 25th, at
2:00 pm in Club Friendship.
Please read the book prior to the
club meeting.
Jessica will have limited
copies of the book to borrow.
Individuals may also borrow
from the library or purchase
their own printed or electronic
copies.
Friendship Singers
In the past, Friendship
residents have come together to
participate in a choir called the
Friendship Singers. Many
individuals have expressed
interest in renewing this activity.
We will have an interest meeting
with a possible director on
January 9th at 2 pm in the
Residents’ Center Chapel. If you
are at all interested in this group,
please join us. We would greatly
appreciate anyone who would
be willing to help us rebuild
this group!
A Toast to a New Year!
We hope you will all join us
for our Annual New Year’s
Toast! Every year we come
together as a Friendship Family
and celebrate the New Year.
Everyone is invited to come
share thoughts and wishes for
the year. The event will be held
on January 4th at 4 pm. in Club
Friendship. We will have both
champagne and sparkling cider.
Classical Music
Performance
On Sunday, Jan. 8th, we will
have a piano and violin
performance in the Residents’
Center.
Pianist Albert Newberry and
Violinist Ocean Ding will be
performing classical music for
the enjoyment of our Friendship
residents. Please join us in the
Chapel at 5 pm.
