LUMINARIES RETURNS TO BROOKFIELD PLACE FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON, BENEFITTING THE GRAMMY MUSEUM Interactive Holiday Light Display Takes Over the Winter Garden at Brookfield Place with Choreographed Light Shows from December 2, 2016 - January 29, 2017 Luminaries at Brookfield Place New York, 2015 New York, New York (November 8, 2016)- Luminaries, the fascinating interactive light installation designed by David Rockwell’s LAB at Rockwell Group, returns to Brookfield Place for its second holiday season. The holiday ritual, based on the season’s traditions of sharing, giving, community, and light, follows the glass-enclosed topography of the iconic Brookfield Place Winter Garden. Visitors to the world class luxury shops and restaurants can reflect under the canopy of light emanating from 647 suspended cubic LED lanterns, while supporting the project’s charitable partner, the GRAMMY Museum and its music education programs. Luminaries will be on display from December 2, 2016 through January 29, 2017. This is the second installation of an annual partnership between Arts Brookfield, Brookfield’s cultural arm and the producer of events at Brookfield Place New York, and the minds at Rockwell Group. The design firm’s expertise in storytelling, narrative, and spectacle makes for the perfect partner to further Arts Brookfield’s goal of animating public spaces and making world-class works of art accessible. The hallmark of Luminaries is its interactivity. Visitors are invited to send wishes into the world through the act of touching one of the three “wishing stations.” When touched, the station cycles through a palette of festive colors, and upon release, each wish materializes as a burst of color traveling through the canopy of lanterns. For every wish sent by the public during the holiday season, Brookfield will donate $1, up to $25,000, to the GRAMMY Museum. In 2015, nearly 1 million visitors experienced Luminaries and cast over 80,000 wishes. For the 2016 iteration of the installation, Arts Brookfield has invited the LAB at Rockwell Group to reinvent Luminaries with newly developed three-dimensional lights shows. Utilizing the height of each cube as well as its relative location in the grid, the light shows will be choreographed to a classic or contemporary piece of holiday music. From December 2, 2016 through January 8, 2017, Luminaries will exhibit three shows synced to the sound of beloved seasonal songs including; Winter Wonderland by Michael Bublé, Silver Bells by Tony Bennett, and Carol of the Bells by The Bird and The Bee. Shows will be presented every 30 minutes on the hour and half hour starting at 8:00 a.m. and ending at 10:00 p.m. daily. After the holidays, Luminaries will transition to its winter schedule, featuring daily winterthemed shows accompanied by instrumental music. The shows, entitled Snowfall, Firecrackers, Northern Lights, Ribbons, and Skater’s Waltz, are presented every 30 minutes on the hour and half hour starting at 8:00 a.m. and ending at 10:00 p.m. daily. Between shows, the installation will cycle through a beautiful sequence of colors. The winter schedule will be active Monday, January 9 through Sunday, January 29, 2017. Luminaries is a public installation that can be enjoyed in the Winter Garden at Brookfield Place, located at 230 Vesey Street, New York, NY, 10281.
