Transliteration of the Regular Shabbat Shacharit Service

Transliteration of the Regular Shabbat Shacharit Service
I have written this guide as a resource to help you learn how to properly pronounce every word in
the Regular Shabbat Shacharit Amida. By working through this guide, you will be able to lead a
Shacharit service from the Bima with no trouble at all.
To help keep track of where we are, I have started each paragraph with the first word in Hebrew.
Also, there are mp3s that you can download from the Shul website that you can download to
learn the Nusach (tune) for the Chazzans repetition.
‫( אדני‬this is said silently to yourself)– Adonai Sefatai Titftach, Uphi Yagid Tehilatecha
‫ – ברוך‬Baruch Ata Adonai, Eloheinu velohei avoteinu, Elohei Avraham, Elohei Yitzchak, Velohei
Ya’akov. HaEl hagadol hagibor vehanora, El elyon, gomel chasadim tovim vekoneh hakol,
vezocher chasdei avot, umevi goel livnei vneihem, lman shemo be’ahava.
‫ – מלך‬Melech ozer oomoshiya oomagen. Baruch Ata Adonai, Magen Avraham
‫ – אתה‬Ata gibor le’olam Adonai, mechayeh metim Ata rav le’hoshia
This following sentence is only said from the end of Succot until the beginning of Pesach:
‫ – משיב‬Mashiv haru’ach oomorid ha’gushem
‫ – מכלכל‬Mechalcel chayim bechesed, mechayeh metim berachamim rabim. Somech nophlim,
veropheh cholim oomatir asurim, oomekayem emunato lishenei aphar. Mi chamacha Ba’al
gvurot, oomi domeh lach, Melech memit oomechayeh oomatzmiyach yeshuah.
‫ – ונאמן‬VeNe’eman Ata lehachayot Metim. Baruch Ata Adonai, mechayeh ha’metim.
‫ – קדושה‬Kedusha. This is only said during the repetition. When doing the silent, private
Amida, skip to ‫ אתה קדוש‬- Ata Kadosh
Now the Chazzan does the Kedusha. This is a responsive part of the service where the
Chazzan and the congregation both need to say certain sentences at different times. I will
indicate when and where certain parts are read either separately or together. Sometimes,
depending on the tune, it can be that even the parts that are said separately are sung
together!
‫ – נקדש‬Said out-loud first by congregation then repeated by the chazzan – Nekadesh et
Shimcha ba’olam, keshem shemakdishim oto bishmei marom, kakatoov al yad neviyecha,
vekara ze el ze ve’amar.
‫ קדוש‬- Said out-loud first by congregation then repeated by the chazzan – Kadosh, Kadosh,
Kadosh Adonai tzeva’ot melo chol ha’aretz kevodo.
‫ – אז‬az – This praragraph is joined to the end of the previous paragraph, so both are said
one after the other. Az bekol, ra’ash gadol adir vechazak mashmi’im kol, mitnasim
le’oomat seraphim, le’oomatam baruch yomeiru.
‫ – ברוך‬Said out-loud first by the congregation then repeated by the chazzan – Baruch
kevod Adonai mimkomo
‫ – ממקומך‬This paragraph is sometimes said silently together with the last sentence by the
congregation and sometimes sung out-loud with the chazzan – Mimkomcha malkeinu
tophia, vetimloch aleinu, ki mechakim anachnu lach. Matai timloch betzion, bekarov
beyameinu, le’olam va’ed tishkon. Titgadal vetitkadash betoch yerushalayim ircha, ledor

‫ מודים‬- When the chazzan repeats the Amida, whilst he says the above paragraph the
congregation says this shorter paragraph quietly to themselves: Modim anachnu lach,

‫ – אלהינו‬This paragraph is said only by the chazzan when he is doing the repetition. When
you see the * symbol the congregation only should say aloud “Ken Ye’he Ratzon” and the
chazzan should allow time for people to say this before continuing.
