I am running for Women’s Officer because I am passionate about ensuring that the voices and concerns of women are heard. Adelaide University has allowed women to study here since 1881 and has many strong women alumni. However, there are still many issues that disproportionately affect women; for example, domestic violence, certain mental and physical health problems and harassment. My role would be to ensure that Adelaide University is a place where women feel safe and valued, and can develop to their full potential. As women’s officer, I would focus on initiatives which improve the culture of campus; for example, teaching about respect and consent, listening to women of different backgrounds to see how the university can address their specific concerns and promoting services for women, such as contraception information. I am approachable and I would make myself available to students who need support. My name is Josh Boughey and I am the Fresh candidate as your Adelaide University Union Board director. Fresh is a group of like-minded students who want to create positive change in your SRC and Union. I am passionate about engaging with students and making sure that these organisations are relevant to them. My name is Beau Brug. I am studying law and international studies at the University of Adelaide and very active in the student community. IndyGo – putting students first! I believe I have the required experience and knowledge to be a Director of your Union Board. This year I have been the SRC Welfare Officer and played a leading role in organising successful events such as Stress Less Day and the weekly free Breakfast Club. At a national level, I also sit on the National Executive of the National Union of Students. I know first-hand where improvements can be made to make your Union more transparent and efficient. I’ve spent a while feeling intimidated by activist/feminist spaces (often Western/white dominant), feeling expectations to be socially aware ‘enough’, talk with the ‘right’ language – this has only led to me doubting my feelings and perception. These expectations compromise safe, diverse expression of feelings and experiences with inequality, life… but aren’t feelings the reason these conversations matter? The AUU is a crucial institution in the creation of a vibrant campus culture. From running O’Week to funding clubs on campus, the Union is central to making every student’s experience at the University of Adelaide a great one. I want to be part of ensuring the Union goes from strength to strength in improving our life on campus. I’m interested in sharing and caring of diverse experiences over say, some intellectualised discussion on racism lead by someone who’s never experienced racism (there’s a lot of that). As an ethnically diverse woman who’s struggled with self-expression, that’s only led me to feeling shutdown and like my experiences weren’t important. If elected: I’m interested in developing social spaces on campus where diverse people can share experiences, and be themselves comfortably. Experiences with culture, ethnicity, education, racism are unique. Everyone understands things differently. Not everyone is interested in labelling their experience in a certain way. It’s more beneficial to focus on care and listening, over expecting one understanding. Give voice to diversity, not just people with a certain education. Renjie (Renji) DU While university can be a great experience, there must also be support services for students so that all of us have access to the assistance we may need – whether it be academic advocacy through Student Care or job-seeking help through Employment Services. The Union is critical in providing these vital services to students and I will ensure they not only continue to improve, but that the Union continues to seek out new ways to support students so we can have the most successful university experience possible. I would be a progressive voice on the AUU Board, committed to seeing student-run services flourish and the Union continue to be the strong foundation for student support and campus culture that it has been for 120 years. IndyGo – putting students first! 7 AUU Board Nominees Jack NEWTON Jenny (Jennifer) NGUYEN Mark PACE The AUU plays an important role in the development of a healthy culture on campus, providing crucial services to the students of the University of Adelaide. It is with this in mind that seek your support to be elected to the AUU Board this year. A student union should sustainably organise its resources and respond to the needs and demands of students. Students rely on the Union for good times. I love seeing events like the national band comp fine-tuning our musicians, laughing at the lame voxpop in On Dit, and the milk chugging game at O’week! A university degree is more than just a qualification. It’s an experience that will prepare us for the rest of our lives. The Union provides critical services that support students during one of the most challenging periods of our lives and give us a rounded campus experience so that our university life is about more than just assignments and exams. I want to ensure that the AUU not only continues to achieve its current goals, but reaches new heights in the years ahead, providing students with relevant services. I believe that as a Board Director one must be fully accountable and accessible to the students. If elected, I will endeavour to be a Board Director that is accessible to all students and who deals with matters in a fair and professional manner. Having been the Education Officer on the SRC this year, as well as serving on the SRC Executive, I believe that I can bring the skills and knowledge that I have learnt this year and apply them in an efficient way as an AUU Board Director. In addition, my involvement with my local surf lifesaving and hockey clubs has given me a deep appreciation for the way organisations, including the AUU can nurture and enhance community engagement. Better Services. Transparency. Vibrancy. I want to make university life better For U! Vote [1] For U. Vote [1] Jack Newton for AUU Board. I know students want to have the best time at university but this process can be damn expensive! My platform is to increase access to professional services, networking opportunities, regular student socials, cheap meals and exclusive student deals on campuses and in the CBD. The availability and affordability of these essential services positively impact on a student’s wellbeing, which we know is paramount to success at university. The Union runs countless services that students may not even know about. It is an issue that I’d like to address by working to see the Union improve the accessibility of these, which support all students through university. I’m running for AUU Board because these services matter, students matter, life on campus matters and students deserve an innovative candidate who will firmly advocate on their behalf. Progressive, Active, Accountable. Activate your Union Vote 1 Jenny Nguyen. 8 If elected to Union Board, I will work to ensure that the student-run services we need most on campus continue to thrive. I want to see vital lifelines like Student Care go above and beyond the needs of students on campus. I want to see events like O’Week get bigger and better, and clubs be supported so that they can continue to provide avenues for student communities to grow. If elected I want to make sure that you can count on your elected Union Board to foster a strong and accountable student union which supports the student voice, life on campus and facilitates vital support services. There’s so much potential for the university to complement our individual lifestyles and breath more life into the campus! Being a part of IndyGo, our priorities aren’t clouded by political ambitions. We have the freedom to act creatively and morally according to our own goals. We’re all individuals and so are you, therefore we need to be able to have a strong, focussed debate on the topics and issues on our university. Students first - no distractions. I’m running for AUU Board and SRC International Student Officer this year. I’ve been at the University for four years and have been involved in various student-run events and committees. I am passionate about the connection artists have with the broader community, and would like to push for more opportunities for students to engage with disciplines different from their own via art. I consider attention to the arts a very important factor and believe that we need a supportive student body to overcome the new issues we are about to face. If elected I will try to extend the connection student clubs and committees have with each other and organisations in Adelaide by supporting regular events that showcase the different kinds of activity. In my early years at Uni I found it difficult to get shows and events off the ground, and would like to be a part of making it easier for other students doing so now. It gives students access to a wide range of opportunities, essential support services, social events and gives them a voice. However, not all students are aware of what is available to them, and if elected, I would like to increase visibility so that students can get the best experience and education from their time at university. Hello all, My name is Lanyuan Wang, currently in my first year of bachelor the degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering, and I am running for Environmental Officer of SRC. Having previously been a member of the SRC, I have the experience, knowledge and passion to advocate for students. I am passionate about student welfare and I want to improve how students experience University, from increasing awareness of support services like Student Care, to where the best student deals are, and what student events are on: campus culture is extremely important to the university experience too! I’m running for AUU Board because I believe in the importance of strong Union services and a great campus culture, and know that I can advocate strongly for the Union developing both of these things on campus. Progressive, Active, Accountable. Activate your Union! Vote 1 Sarah Tynan! I do believe myself of being rational, composed and highly motivated for the environmental issues. I will fight for the voice of environmentalist as the growing of absolute number of environmentalists enables us to voice and change. As an international student from China, where environmental problems are drawing increasing attention of the public in recent years, my personal sense of commitment to environmental security is extraordinarily strong. Having activists in key student union positions helped that happen, and I’m proud of what I contributed as State Education Officer this year. I’m especially proud of my contributions to the ongoing campaign to save the Centre for Aboriginal Studies in Music (CASM) and classical voice. Student Voice will lead an SRC that takes up these campaigns. We’ll also take up issues of injustice. Racism continues its ugly tradition in Australian politics. That’s why Student Voice wants Adelaide University to be a Refugee Welcome Zone, with support for refugees to study here, and our Stick It To Bigotry sticker campaign will give resources to students wanting to challenge oppression on campus. For LGBTI students, the homophobia of our government is wallop to the face: our university should take a side, give support to all students and fly the rainbow flag proudly! All of the candidates for Student Voice are fantastic activists, with campaigns and ideas for defending student rights and standing up for social justice. As President I’ll be taking up these campaigns and providing a platform for students to raise their own voices. I know first-hand where improvements can be made to make your SRC more transparent and efficient. 16 Queer Officer Nominees Caitlin LANGFORD Matthew MACOWAN Earlier this year the Australian LGBT Uni Guide was published and unsurprisingly, the University of Adelaide did not rate highly as a queer-friendly university. Hi, I’m Matt and I would be honoured to be your SRC Queer Officer in 2016. As a gay student myself, I am passionate about LGBTIQ+ rights, and marriage equality in our country. If elected SRC Queer Officer, I aim to change this by making services widely available to help queer students with any issue they may face. Whether this be by combatting homophobia and transphobia on campus or by making unisex bathrooms available. LGBTIQ+ students should feel part of a community; safe and free to be themselves while on campus, just as they should in their lives outside of university. There are services at university that can support queer-identifying students and I aim to be a link between these students and any help or services they may require. Policy is often reflective of an institution’s attitudes and the University of Adelaide doesn’t have an anti-discrimination policy for queer students. Additionally, staff are not given the tools or education on how to be sensitive to our needs. I intend to help change the queer student’s experience at Adelaide University, so it is one of inclusion and acceptance not one of thinly veiled homophobia. I want our university to be known as the best queer-friendly university in South Australia. This can only happen if we have strong queer leaders in our representative positions – leaders who are keenly aware of the issues queer students face on and off campus and who are ready to do whatever it takes to address them. I am very excited to be running for this position as it encompasses issues that are very close to my heart. I hope my voice can be a channel for yours and will do my best to ensure that queer-identifying students are represented on campus. Better Services. Transparency. Vibrancy. Vote 1 Caitlin Langford! 17 Education Officer Nominees Renjie (Renji) DU Claudia KEOGH Zhao (Joe) LU The past decades have seen drastic changes to education: from university being free, we are now fighting against the possibility of a US-style education system. Fee deregulation would lead to degrees costing upwards of $100 000. Meanwhile, staff cuts make class sizes larger, leaving us with a lower quality of education and a lifelong debt. The campaign against deregulation has been extremely successful. Through mass student protests, deregulation became one of the most unpopular items in Abbott’s budgets. We made a student issue a public concern and deregulation was knocked down in the senate twice! But Adelaide University is trying to corporatise our education in insidious ways, through firing staff, cutting courses, deleting degrees and merging faculties. Far from “seeking light”, Adelaide Uni keeps students in the dark. This has to end. As Education Officer I’d have the SRC fully behind the campaigns of this year: against deregulation, as well as the attacks on the Centre for Aboriginal Studies in Music (CASM), Classical Voice and tutorial budgets. We need a fighting SRC, and I have the activist politics necessary to make that happen. RAISE YOUR VOICE – STUDENT VOICE 18 Welfare Officer Nominees Nicholas BARIC Mark PACE My name is Nikolas Baric and I am currently studying a double degree of Law and Commerce (Corporate Finance). I am running for the position of SRC Welfare Officer in 2016 because I want to continue the SRC’s effort to assist disadvantaged students. I am a passionate person and I want to be a voice for all students who are studying at the University of Adelaide. So far the SRC has done a fantastic job with initiatives like the SRC Breakfast Club and I am determined to work together with the SRC and Student Care to support student welfare in 2016. In the past year we’ve seen several threats to student welfare. The Abbott Government is intent on ruining student income support payments and attacking the livelihood of thousands of students in retail and hospitality who rely on penalty rates. Student welfare is at serious risk, and all the while our Vice-Chancellor pockets his $900K-a-year salary and lends his support to the government’s vendetta to increase the cost of university by deregulating fees. We know that climate change must be tackled – it’s not going away. For students, this means showing leadership and engaging in the movement for meaningful action on climate change. It means our university should be at the forefront of moves towards transitioning to a low carbon future. We must also ensure that, on a campus level, we are doing our bit to create a sustainable and environmentally friendly society. Waste reduction is just one step toward achieving this. I am studying law and international studies at the University of Adelaide and very active in the student community. With Tony Abbott’s ‘turn back the boats’ policy and Labor’s non-existent opposition to it, the government seems determined not to grant refugees the right to seek asylum in Australia. This is a violation of basic human rights, something that the Adelaide Uni SRC should be leading a fight against. I’m a second year Law and International Studies student. The role of the SRC is to make your life on campus easier, and I want to help fulfil that role as your Social-Justice Officer in 2016. Whether this is being involved with the ‘Overheard at University of Adelaide’ online community, making the Vice-Chancellor commit to the #IceBucketChallenge or my involvement in numerous clubs and faculty associations on campus over the past 3 years, it can be seen I am active because I care. LET’S MAKE SOME NOISE, VOTE 1 STUDENT VOICE! 25 Mature Age Officer Nominees Jacqueline DETTMAN Qingbin (Sean) HAN I have a deep concern for student welfare generally and I have prior experience representing students: in 2007-2009, while an undergraduate, I was the student director of Student Care, the Union-funded academic advocacy and welfare service for students at the University of Adelaide. This experience also means that, in relation to mature age students specifically, my perspective is informed by more than the lived experience of myself and those of the people I know directly. The ideal candidate would be someone who could communicate and has an appreciation for the cultural and linguistic diversity of the student body. This is an area in which I have particular strength; I have an undergraduate major in Chinese language (Mandarin), have training in cross-cultural communication, and currently volunteer with community organization Welcome to Australia. A vote for me would be a vote for a progressive candidate with a passion for advocating for the unique issues of mature age students and the ability to communicate effectively to advance their interests. Vote 1 Jacqueline Dettman! 26 Disability Officer Nominees Macintyre HOWIE-REEVES Richard MATTHEWS My name is Macintyre Howie Reeves and I am a third year Arts/Music student. I am running for disability officer with Student Voice in the SRC elections. I initially decided to run for office after experiencing poor working practices of the Elder Conservatorium and lack of care for students. I wish to remedy the following aspects: Unrecorded lectures, assignments submitted in forms not in line with the rest of the university, subjects being cancelled during the start of new semesters and hostility towards students from heads of study and school. Changes such as heads of study being unqualified for their portfolio, bring up further concerns for music students. Course changes throughout the University also have detrimental effects on students with disabilities. The emphasis on group work across the university causes difficulties for students with anxiety or ongoing unpredictable medical conditions. Course material not being available in accessible formats is also an issue. Students with hidden disabilities are not seeking help due to lack of knowledge about services and embarrassment surrounding the word. I’m dyslexic with dysgraphia and will work with university staff and students to help combat these issues as well to change the stigma associated with the word disability. Being a committee member of the Victims of Abuse in the Australian Defence Force Association, Richard Matthews was instrumental in policy formulation through regular consultation with Australian Senators and Federal Ministers . Such policy included holding the Australian Government accountable for acts of abuse and torture to our men and women in uniform. Through the Association, Richard has helped facilitate just over $1 Million in reparation payments for victims. Suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from his time in uniform, he has first hand knowledge of what it is to experience the daily struggles of life with an invisible illness. Identifying as having Dyslexia and Dysgraphia he hasn’t let anything stop him and last year graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with Honours. Richard is now studying a Masters in Philosophy in Electronic Engineering and tutoring fellow engineering students. Richard knows how to successfully liaise with the University’s on site support services for students who identify as having a disability, mental or chronic illness. He is not afraid to engage with highlevel stake holders within the University to ensure the same level outcomes are achievable for his constituents. 27 Rural Officer Nominees Angus CROUCH Damon NICHOLSON I’m Angus and I am running for the position of Rural Officer. I am a second year electrical engineering student, studying a double degree in computer and mathematical sciences. My name is Matthew Boughey and I am the Fresh candidate for SRC General Councilor. I am passionate about engaging with students and making sure that these organisations are relevant to them. My name is Jessica Breen and I am currently in my first year of a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Teaching degree. I am running to be your SRC General Councillor in 2016 because I am determined to improve the services the SRC currently provides to students. I believe the SRC should be about more than just petty politics and ‘hacktivism’ – the SRC should be determined to deliver value to the general student population, not just those few students engaged in student politics. I will strive to support the demands of the student body, and work for you. Better Services. Transparency. Vibrancy. I want to make university life better For U! Vote [1] For U. The right of all students on campus to feel safe and supported on campus is crucial and I will fight to promote awareness of student support and security services. After years of being in a job that I didn’t enjoy I finally decided to throw caution to the wind and do something that I was truly passionate about. And so began my journey, at the age of 29, to become a secondary school teacher, and I have not regretted a single moment! I love to walk around uni and look at the beautiful architecture we have, and I also enjoy catching up on my Shakespeare studies over a pint at the uni bar while looking out at the cloisters. The University of Adelaide has such a rich and vibrant student culture which is welcoming and full of diversity and I believe that it is important that the SRC continues to support and grow this wonderful environment to ensure that each person who studies at Adelaide has an amazing and memorable student experience throughout their years. With this commitment, I want to work on the SRC and deliver real results of the students of Adelaide University. My name is William Cheffirs and I am the Fresh candidate for SRC. Fresh is a group of like-minded students who want to create positive change in your SRC and Union. I am passionate about engaging with students and making sure that these organisations are relevant to them. When speaking of the price of education, people focus on direct fees accumulated as students fill their “shopping cart”. Rightfully so: they’re exorbitant and threatened with rising while the likes of Pyne run our education system. Working in committees of other associations means I have the up to date knowledge of what other organisations are doing and not doing or what is working or not working for them; which means a stronger SRC for our university. The right of all students on campus to feel safe and supported on campus is crucial and I will fight to promote awareness of student support and security services. William Cheffirs However, this isn’t the full picture facing students. We face endless ‘hidden costs’. We’re required to dish out hundreds of dollars each semester on readers, textbooks and printing to avoid academic failure. The costs of food, transport and accommodation make full-time study an experience of stress and instability. This is about pushing more burden onto students while the VC gets his pay-rise. It needs to be reversed. I demand that Adelaide University provide readers, textbooks and unlimited printing to students for free. Students required to perform internships and placements should receive a living wage for their labour. The SRC must campaign to abolish hidden costs, and I have the militancy needed to win. The education campaign over the past two years has made a serious impact on Australian politics and beat deregulation twice. I’ve led protests in Adelaide, and have the activist approach that won in the past and will win in the future. NO HIDDEN COSTS! VOTE STUDENT VOICE! 31 General Councillor Nominees Alexander (AJ) DURNAN Ben FOSTER Nicholas GARBAS Hi all, my name is Alexander but everyone knows me as AJ. Vote STUDENT VOICE for Marriage Equality and to fight homophobia. As a third year Psychology and Anthropology student, I hope to be part of an SRC that expands and implements accessible resources and services available to students to make university life that little bit easier. General Councillor is not bound by any particular goal beyond improving every student’s university experience. I believe that political grandstanding over cohesive team effort is detrimental to the advancement of students’ quality of education and the university experience. Having spent two years on the Lincoln College Executive Committee as first year representative and the following year as Bar and Utilities manager, I have a wealth of experience organising events as part of a student organisation, and have always enjoyed working with a diverse team for a common goal. The struggle for marriage equality has had significant wins in the past few months, the referendum in Ireland, and the victory in the USA. These inspiring international victories have shown the callousness of the main political parties in Australia, who either openly oppose gay marriage or otherwise try to shove our rights back into the closet by saying they will support it in 2019… maybe. The University of Adelaide is a fantastic institution full of creative and intelligent students whose ideas are often never heard. I hope to be the catalyst for a more representative SRC by offering an approachable and objective view on all issues that students have. In order for the SRC to work effectively it must work for every student, of every background in any way they can. I hope to be a part of this exciting approach so we can make this fantastic University even better. IndyGo – putting students first! This is unacceptable. As a general councillor I will fight for a more inclusive university for LGBTI students, and for our rights nationally. The fight has been strongest when people stand together in solidarity, whether in public rallies, riots—as was Stonewall—or through strike action. There is an alternative to what we have to live through today and the Student Representative Council should fight for it along with everyone who wants to smash homophobia. Adelaide University should show its support for LGBTI rights by flying the Rainbow Flag, and STUDENT VOICE will work to make that happen. The overwhelming majority in Australia support same-sex marriage, we must break through the oppression forced upon LGBTI people and ROAR! RAISE YOUR VOICE—STUDENT VOICE! 32 Better Services. I am a second year Law/Commerce Student. Prioritising students’ interests and fighting for your rights to a quality, accessible education are why I want to be your general councillor. As a progressive candidate, I believe that the SRC should strongly fight university deregulation and other government attacks on education and stand against moves in university management, which would degrade our quality of education and make it inaccessible to students. For too long the student union has been overrun with leadership more concerned with a fast-track into parliamentary politics rather than a legitimate obligation to fulfil its purpose of fighting for students’ rights. From the gothic architecture, to the rich campus life. I truly believe Adelaide University is one of the best universities in Australia. Despite this, I feel like our SRC is letting students down. All too often, we see the SRC engaging in irrelevant activist campaigns, when what students really want is a student body that actually understands and represents the regular student. If elected as SRC General Councillor I will ensure that the SRC matches the reputation of Adelaide University. Better Services. Transparency. Vibrancy. I want to make university life better For U! I am currently a volunteer at Foodbank Food Hub Bowden. These experiences have developed my passion for social justice and helped me appreciate the value of advocacy for those who need it. Activate your SRC! Vote 1 John Swan! 36 As an activist involved in progressive campaigns beyond the education campaign, such as the marriage equality campaign and counter-rallies to racism, it is particularly appalling and shameful that the student union refuses to take active positions on other issues that affect students. As a General Councillor on the Student Representative Council I would be arguing for the union to actually take up these wider issues like pledging support to the BDS campaign, because they are not in isolation from students’ experiences at university. If elected, I would use the platform to advocate for mobilising students against attacks on education and the implications they have on already oppressed groups which leads into a campaign Student Voice would enact called #StickItToBigotry; a campaign seeing students issued with stickers to cover the sexist, racist and homophobic graffiti that pervades the campus. A hard stance against all attacks on students, in whatever form they take is what I can offer as a candidate for the SRC. RAISE YOUR VOICE – STUDENT VOICE! Ellie THOMAS Sarah TYNAN I am a first year studying psychology. One of the things that myself and other students are struggling with is the lack of tutorials, like literally none, this really sucks studying difficult concepts and makes it harder to ask for help when you need it. I know that plans for the University are to decrease class/tutorial sizes and cut even more tutorials and am strongly against this. It is unfair to charge higher rates for students education while decreasing quality of teaching. Areas such as Arts and music are under threat of massive cuts to funding and the cutting of the Centre for Aboriginal Studies of Music (CASM) being cut entirely. I want to work with the students to oppose these cuts and see their voices heard. With the Government’s agenda of destroying the quality, affordable education system we all need, the SRC is more important than ever. We need to continue protesting the education cuts and demonstrating to the Government and the University that our education, and the education of those that come after us, is important and something that everyone deserves equal access too. IndyGo – putting students first! Xinwei (Martin) WANG As someone who has sat on the SRC before, I have the experience, knowledge and passion to advocate for students. As a General Councillor I would work with other SRC members in running issue-based events, advocating for you on the issues most concerning you, and fighting against the cuts to courses that university management have in store for us. I recently returned from a year abroad and believe that studying at another University overseas has given me perspective on the strengths of Adelaide University, but also the areas that need improvement. I believe I can bring a new perspective and fresh ideas to the SRC with this experience. Progressive, Active, Accountable. Activate your SRC! Time at university can be some of the most rewarding years in a person’s life. However, they can also be some of the toughest. Students today confront a multitude of issues, from juggling work and study commitments, to battling mental health issues and financial hardship. Unfortunately, issues like these have a detrimental impact on a student’s wellbeing and ability to succeed at university, and most students don’t know that there are services available to support them on campus. I want to listen to your concerns, and support you to find the services that you need, on and off campus. I want to make sure those services flourish and are developed so they can meet your needs. I hope to be the sort of person that all students feel comfortable approaching – whether it be for help and advice, or just a chat. A vote for me to represent you at NUS’ National Conference is a vote to keep NUS as a relevant organisation in tune with the majority of students. I will vote for important constitutional reforms that will make the union even stronger. I strongly support NUS’ lobbying efforts and protest actions against the deregulation of your university fees and further regressive cuts against students. Having been involved with the student union here at Adelaide for a long time, and this year being the President of the AUU, I am familiar with many of the issues affecting students both locally and across the country, as well as the various structures and problems student unions can run into along the path of representing students effectively. This year, I have been a strong advocate for students around the issues of fee deregulation, welfare, and local cuts to courses and have been heavily involved with the work around redeveloping Union House. My name is Beau Brug. I am studying law and international studies at the University of Adelaide and very active in the student community. We need a national union that can represent students effectively, that isn’t completely controlled by students who want to become politicians one day. We need a national union made up of diverse students, from different backgrounds, that have policies that apply to everyone. This year, the NUS is considering many aspects of its constitutional reform and other reforms. My aim is to be a part of this conversation collaboratively, bringing effective policies at the conference to ensure students’ interests are at heart. I am an experienced, capable candidate to achieve this. IndyGo - putting students first! 40 Whether this is being involved with the ‘Overheard at University of Adelaide’ online community, making the Vice-Chancellor commit to the #IceBucketChallenge or my involvement in numerous clubs and faculty associations on campus over the past 3 years, it can be seen I am active because I care. [Vote 1 - Beau BRUG] Max CHAMBERS William CHEFFIRS Iacovos DIGENIS STUDENT VOICE – For an actively anti-racist national union! My name is William Cheffirs and I am a Fresh candidate for National Union of Students delegate. Fresh is a group of like-minded students who want to create positive change in your National Union. As the peak representative body for students, the National Union of Students fights for your rights as a university student at a national level. In the past two years, having dedicated activists in Student Union and Student Representative Council positions has had a profound impact on the national education campaign, defeating the Liberal government’s fee deregulation twice already. As NUS delegate I will argue for the education campaign to be continued and fierce. Students simply can not afford $100 000 degrees and the lower standard of education that deregulation entails. The national union should be taking this activist approach to other national campaigns. With the government prosecuting horrendously racist policies and positions against Muslims and refugees, it is clear that the Student Union at a national level has a duty to act as an alternative to, and present a strong opposition to, the Abbott government. Deregulation and other cuts will disproportionately affect students already targeted by racism. As a student activist, I have played a key role in both the education campaign and the campaign against racism, opposing the bigots of Reclaim Australia and fighting for refugee rights. NUS has been a strong and effective voice in fighting Tony Abbott’s plans to deregulate university fees. I have participated in their Demand a Better Future campaign throughout this year because I am passionate about our right to a quality and affordable education. In this political climate it is imperative that the University of Adelaide send strong voices to NUS to ensure that we keep up the fight against Tony Abbott’s attacks on students. If elected your delegate I will ensure NUS continues to campaign on the issues that matter to you and that will give you a quality education and quality life. I also want to ensure that NUS continues to fight to make higher education more accessible to future students. Education is a right everyone not only for the increased opportunity a tertiary education can bring but also for the positive effect it has on our society. The national union should actively support these ongoing campaigns against racism in all its ugly forms. Progressive, Active, Accountable. Activate your National Union! Vote 1 Iacovos Digenis! RAISE YOUR VOICE—STUDENT VOICE! 41 NUS Nominees Renjie (Renji) DU Madeleine EDHOUSE Tom GILCHRIST NUS’ protest campaign of the last two years against fee deregulation has been highly successful - mobilising thousands of students, making fee deregulation into one of the most hated parts of Abbott’s budget and seeing it defeated twice in the Senate. And it has been the pressure from below which has made all the difference. I believe the union should be dedicated to fighting for student rights and standing against oppression through mass, on-the-ground protest campaigns. At its best, the National Union of Students has connected student activists and unionists from around Australia in campaigns involving thousands of students standing up for their own rights and the issues they believe in. Just look at the education campaign of the last couple of years for a shining example. Deregulation has not been defeated yet, and this union needs to keep up the fight. It is essential to have activists within the union, to argue against passive tactics of sucking up to VCs instead of actual protest action. As an activist who has been involved in various protests against oppression and has been a part of the fight against fee deregulation, I believe I am in a good position to make these arguments. I think the union should be as accessible as possible to all students, that NUS conferences should be free for all students to attend, so that everyone has an opportunity to participate. For a fighting union willing to kick up a fuss against injustice… RAISE YOUR VOICE - STUDENT VOICE! And yet for many students, NUS seems inaccessible. For a start, there’s the exorbitant costs of attending conferences for ordinary students. The delegates at the National Conference are supposed to be responsible to the students that elect them. The conference should be free for any student who wants to attend. Then there’s the campaigns it runs. They should involve as many students as possible, actively participating. The education campaign shows what’s possible. NUS should extend this activist approach, and there’s no shortage of issues it could take up: Supporting the campaign against the insidious rise of Islamophobia and the far-right Reclaim Australia. Giving a renewed push to the campaign for marriage equality. Fighting for justice for refugees. Student Voice activists in the national union will be able to take up these and other issues as they arise in Australian politics. I will vote for important constitutional reforms that will make the union even stronger. I strongly support NUS’ lobbying efforts and protest actions against the deregulation of your university fees and further regressive cuts against students. It’s fundamental students work collectively against the deregulation of fees imposed by the Abbott Government. The National Union of Students is the peak body that represents university students and works as an active voice to fight for student rights nationwide. This year I’ve decided to nominate to be your representative on the NUS. As your On Dit editor for 2015 I have seen the ins and outs of student politics and representation on campus. As your NUS delegate I’ll take an active role in fighting for students’ rights on and off campus. Being part of NUS allows us to help hold our University and Government accountable and in the spotlight, as they try to implement vicious attacks on our education. Last year I was fortunate enough to attend the NUS National Conference as an observer, this year I want to represent you at conference and spell out to our government crystal clear, students are against attacks on our welfare and education. Progressive, Active, Accountable. Activate your National Union! Vote 1 Dylan Mackay! 43 More often than not I’ve seen student politicians elected to bodies in order to serve their own interests and not those of students. The NUS is a body which you pay good money in order to fund (through your SSAF) but which you receive little from. If elected, I will endeavour to push for appropriate student services and quality educational outcomes while being a voice for the silent majority of mainstream students on campus whose views are often ignored. Better Services. Transparency. Vibrancy. I want to make university life better For U! Vote [1] For U. Vote [1] Leighton McDonald-Stuart. NUS Nominees Kyriaco NIKIAS Mark PACE Adi (Arty) RAI I’ve put my hand up to have the chance to represent mainstream students at the NUS conference this year. It is important to have a moderate voice pushing for real student services and educational outcomes — not just using the NUS as a proxy body for some poorly-disguised political agenda. In 12 months we’ve witnessed a government that quite clearly puts students last. Cuts to education and welfare have left vulnerable students defenceless, the only solution is strong student unionism, protecting students and giving them a voice on a national level. I have spent the past few years of my sad life involved in both the SRC and AUU. In this time I am proud to say that I have been part of implementing projects and policy to better serve the students at Adelaide University. This year I’d like to be your delegate to the National Conference of the National Union of Students. I’ve had a year’s experience at Adelaide Uni in serving on the SRC and its Executive — it has been an excellent year, and my team and I have fought to deliver a functional, accountable, and open student body to deliver better representation for mainstream students. If I have the opportunity to go to the NUS conference I will endeavour to represent the real interests of students—quality educational outcomes and services. Better Services. Transparency. Vibrancy. I want to make university life better For U! Vote [1] For U. Vote [1] Kyriaco Nikias. The National Union of Students has been pivotal in fighting this Tory government’s agenda of a two-tier deregulated education system. The NUS National Days of Action have involved students and the broader community, working collaboratively to defeat deregulation in parliament for the second time. In order to maintain the momentum it’s important we as a university send the most committed students as delegates in order have our views heard. I was fortunate enough to represent Adelaide last year as an NUS delegate where I was able voice students concerns on vital issues implemented by the government that puts students last, and hope to do so again in 2016 if elected. Progressive, Active, Accountable. Activate your National Union! Vote 1 Mark Pace! 44 The NUS is a key to student representation on a national level. Over the last few years tertiary education has come under fire by the federal government who insist on cutting funding while also attempting (not once but twice) to implement fee deregulation and opening the way for Universities to charge exorbitant fees for degrees. It has been through the national campaigns organised by the NUS that students were given a voice and a way to fight back. The NUS is not without its own problems. Recently the organisation has found itself in some financial distress. This is likely due to the lack of accountability and visibility within the NUS governance structure, and if elected your delegate, this will be one area in which I will work hard to reform. Vote 1 IndyGo – Putting Students First John SWAN Ellie THOMAS Lanyuan (Brian) WANG A strong National Union of Students will fight to protect your rights as a university student. I want to be your delegate to promote a united student movement against conservative attacks on university education. I am a first year studying psychology. One of the things that myself and other students are struggling with is the lack of tutorials, like literally none, this really sucks studying difficult concepts and makes it harder to ask for help when you need it. My involvement in opposing university fee deregulation through activism at Adelaide University has developed my ability to communicate and organise effectively. I will advocate for a combination of direct student activism and political lobbying to ensure that both the broader community and Australia’s leaders recognise our rights. Hello all, My name is Lanyuan Wang, currently in my first year of bachelor the degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering, and I am running for Environmental Officer of SRC. I do believe myself of being rational, composed and highly motivated for the environmental issues. I will fight for the voice of environmentalist as the growing of absolute number of environmentalists enables us to voice and change. If elected, as an environmentalist, I would dedicate myself in creating a better environment for all the students by improving the involvement of environmental issues of all the student. As an international student from China, where environmental problems are drawing increasing attention of the public in recent years, my personal sense of commitment to environmental security is extraordinarily strong. Environmental protection is not far from our life, it is related to even every breath of air we enjoy. Every small change makes a big difference, I’m here to concentrate the power of the small change and will make the big difference to the environment which we will all benefit from! Every vote counts, if you are with me, please do not hesitate to vote for me. Thank you so much. Progressive, Active, Accountable. Activate your National Union! Vote 1 John Swan! 45 NUS Nominees Rhys WILLIAMS Siqi (Jeffrey) YANG I am currently in my fourth year of university, studying a Double Bachelor of Media/International Studies, as well as a Diploma of Languages in Mandarin. I am so fortunate to have been elected to the AUU Board at the student elections last year and I have found it to be an amazing experience. I am passionate about making the AUU and SRC organisations more relevant to the regular Adelaide University student through events and a wider range of services to students. I also want to be your National Union of Students delegate to make sure the exorbitant annual fees the AUU pays to the NUS are being spent on representing the views of regular university students, and not on wasteful and violent political campaigns. Student radio gives students a voice in whatever they’re passionate about - be it music, special interest groups or politics - and we will aim for this voice to be as diverse as possible. New talent and fresh ideas will be very important in 2016, but we would love to see the return some of the staples of student radio in previous years, in particular Midnight Static and the political talk-show Left, Right and Centre. In addition, we believe student radio deserves a higher recognition around the university by better integrating the presenters and programming into university events as well as boosting our social media presence. Our station, Radio Adelaide, faces a challenging year ahead and we aim to see student radio’s presence continue with as much strength behind it as possible. We are extremely proud to have been involved in student radio this past year and we would be proud to represent your voice on campus as student radio directors in 2016. 49 Notes 50 Notes ALL POLICY STATEMENTS AND PUBLICITY ARE SUBJECT TO THE CLAUSES OF THE AUU RULES CONCERNING THE CONDUCT OF ANNUAL ELECTIONS, BY-ELECTIONS & REFERENDA.
