Beautiful Flower Bouquets Sustainably Grown in the Cowichan Valley
Focal Flowers Through the Season
Fabulous Fillers
In addition to their low-impact on the environment, seasonal,
local focal flowers can’t be beat for their lushness and vibrancy.
On Vancouver Island, here are some gorgeous possibilities:
Focal flowers play the starring role in bridal bouquets, but
filler flowers are the co-stars that help the focals to
really shine. They can add texture and bulk to wedding
arrangements, keeping the overall cost down.
On Vancouver Island, we are blessed with a long growing
season and therefore, a wide range of filler flowers that
change over the course of the year, making each bouquet
they accent unique.
Here are some amazing options:
Queen Anne’s Lace (Ammi)
This is one of my all-time favourite
fillers. It adds a romantic, airy
feeling to any bouquet. It was
named after Queen Anne who was
an expert lace maker and tried to
make a lace pattern as pretty as
the flower. Symbolically, it is said
to represent sanctuary or haven.
Early spring: Double tulips & Lilacs
Late spring: Peonies & Old-Fashioned Roses
Summer: Calla Lilies & Lilies
Fall: Dahlias & Sunflowers
Statice (Limonium)
Limonium comes from the Greek
word for meadow and symbolizes
lasting beauty. These papery
flowers add fullness to bouquets
and come in a variety of colours
from white to pink, peach, blue
and purple.
Chamomile
I love this flower more and more each
year! Symbolizing energy in action,
love, and the feminine, chamomile has
small daisylike, sweetly-scented flowers that add a just-picked wildflower
look to bouquets.
Love-in-a-mist (Nigella)
These charming white, blue or pink flowers are surrounded by a mist of fernlike
foliage.
The flowers eventually turn into balloon
like pods with purple stripes and are
also prized in arrangements.
