K N King’s Norton B S Boys’ School THE SCHOOL WORKS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PARENTS TO HELP OUR BOYS ACHIEVE THEIR POTENTIAL IN A CALM AND SAFE ATMOSPHERE, SUPPORTED BY A WIDE RANGE OF EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES. 2 A warm welcome FROM THE HEAD I AM DELIGHTED THAT YOU ARE CONSIDERING KNBS FOR YOUR SON’S SECONDARY EDUCATION. We are proud of our history as a popular and successful boys’ school, and we make no apologies for our traditional ethos. We expect boys to work hard, have high standards of behaviour, and to display respect for others in the school community. We recognise that our boys will be leaving us to go into a highly competitive world, and so we aim to instil values of resilience and independence as well as encouraging boys, whatever their ability, to achieve their academic potential. Choosing a secondary school for your son is a crucial decision. If you feel that our ethos and expectations are right for you and your son, then I do hope you will join us for these critical years in your son’s life. Paul Woodhouse Headteacher 3 A safe and orderly ENVIRONMENT OUR HOUSE SYSTEM OFFERS EXCELLENT PASTORAL CARE AND KEEPS OUR BOYS SAFE For all parents this is one of the most important factors in choosing a secondary school. At KNBS we are committed to ensuring that boys are able to learn well and enjoy school in an atmosphere that is safe and secure. Visitors to the school tell us that they are surprised at how calm and quiet it is – you are welcome to visit us at any time and see for yourself. We have well established systems to prevent bullying. As a school of over 700 boys we never say “it won’t happen”, but when it does, our dedicated team of house heads and welfare leaders will deal with it quickly and effectively. 4 A stimulating CURRICULUM THE SCHOOL OFFERS A WIDE RANGE OF ACADEMIC AND VOCATIONAL SUBJECTS TO BRING OUT THE BEST IN EACH BOY AND TO PREPARE HIM FOR A SUCCESSFUL FUTURE. 5 OUR CURRICULUM IS DESIGNED TO GIVE EACH BOY THE CHANCE TO EXPERIENCE A BROAD AND ROUNDED EDUCATION, WITH A FREE CHOICE OF ACADEMIC AND VOCATIONAL OPTIONS AT GCSE. Years 7 - 9 Our boys study a full range of traditional subjects, including a language. We make extensive use of setting by ability to ensure each boy makes as much progress as possible. Years 10 – 11 Boys study a core curriculum of Maths, Science and English. They then have a free choice of GCSEs and BTEC vocational subjects. This enables all boys to follow a route that is most suitable to their needs and strengths. Sixth Form Boys study either the traditional A level route, starting with 4 AS levels, or a vocational route of a level 3 BTEC and an A level. At each stage, there is extensive advice and support to enable you to make the right decision so that your son can enjoy school, achieve his best, and be successful. 6 High academic STANDARDS OUR EXAM RESULTS MAKE US ONE OF THE HIGHEST ACHIEVING BOYS’ COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOLS IN BIRMINGHAM. Our school ethos encourages boys to work hard and take school seriously. We are supported strongly by parents who understand the importance of good qualifications. Teachers work tirelessly to offer support to boys through extra classes and revision sessions. We understand the importance of homework , which is set regularly from the start of year 7. Our insistence on good standards of behaviour and conduct sets the tone for learning in an atmosphere free of disruption. 7 Outstanding individual SUPPORT WE PLACE GREAT EMPHASIS ON THE PROGRESS OF EACH INDIVIDUAL BOY. OUR TEAM OF SPECIALIST TEACHERS AND TEACHING ASSISTANTS PROVIDES SUPPORT FOR THOSE BOYS WITH ADDITIONAL LEARNING NEEDS. 8 A successful SIXTH FORM OUR SIXTH FORM BOYS ARE FULLY SUPPORTED IN THEIR QUEST FOR ACADEMIC & PERSONAL SUCCESS. We have a partnership with Kings Norton Girls School that combines the benefits of specialised teaching and support with a breadth of wider opportunities to match any sixth form in Birmingham. Whilst many students study entirely at their home school, our joint timetabling gives a high degree of flexibility that maximises subject choice and maintains favourable group sizes. There is a range of social activities that provides the perfect transition for students who have studied GCSEs at single sex schools. Whilst KN6 is a large sixth form, the two smaller home institutions provide a warm and nurturing atmosphere that allows all students to maximise their potential, whatever their plans after years 12 and 13. We have an enviable record of preparing students for university entrance and life after school. 9 A strong sense of COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION IS OF GREAT IMPORTANCE AT KNBS. Our boys enjoy a wide range of extra-curricular activities, giving numerous opportunities for enjoyment, leadership, teamwork and competition. We have a number of highly successful sports teams, a strong tradition of music performance, and a range of clubs to suit all interests. Our staff give freely of their time and are excellent role models. “I FEEL THAT YOUNG BOYS WHO COME THROUGH THESE DOORS WILL LEAVE AS YOUNG MEN WE CAN ALL BE PROUD OF.” PARENT 10 “YOU HAVE MANAGED TO BRING OUT THE BEST IN THE BOYS AND MY SON HAS BECOME A CONFIDENT YOUNG MAN.” PARENT 11 K N King’s Norton B S Boys’ School Rowheath Pavilion RD ow Rd B412 1 Station ton Train Kingʼs Nor 41 A4 A441 Lo n g f e l l RD d ield R MIDDLETON HALL RD F TF O WA ANDS PARK RD ODL WO KN BS rthf No kli H AT ra n HE SELLY O AK RD RD Woodlands Park 40 N RD A 4 0 LINDE Rowheath Playing Fields n Rd Northfield Road, Birmingham, B30 1DY.
