The 14th Dalai Lama

Born in Tibet as Lhamo Thondup, 6th July.
1939
Formally recognised as the 14th Dalai Lama.
Given religious name of Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang
Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso (or Tenzin Gyatso for short).
1940
Enthroned as 14th Dalai Lama.
1950
Begins formal duties, aged 15.
1959
Following China’s invasion of Tibet, fleas to India as a refugee.
1959 - present day
Travels world representing Tibet, meeting politicians,
religious leaders and celebrities as well as followers.
Speaks out about the welfare of Tibetans, the environment,
economics, women’s rights, non-violence,
interfaith dialogue and more.
1989
Awarded Nobel Peace Prize.

“Mahatma” Gandhi
KEY DATES
1869
Born Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi
in Porbanda, India on 2nd October.
Mahatma is a nickname meaning “Great Soul”.
1888-1891
Trained as barrister in England.
1893
Accepted 1 year contract at a law firm in South Africa.
Stays 21 years and begins campaigning for civil rights.
1915
Returns to India. Joins Indian National Congress
campaigns for independence from Britain using campaigns
of non-violence and non-cooperation.
1922
Arrested and tried for inciting people to rebel against
the state. Sentenced to six years imprisonment.
Released after two years.
1930
As a protest against the governments salt tax, leads
thousands of Indians 241 miles to the sea to make salt
themselves.
1947
India partitioned to form Pakistan. Half a million killed in riots.
10-12 million Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims cross new border.
1948
Assassinated in New Delhi, India.

1960
Founded The Beatles with Paul McCartney,
George Harrison & Ringo Starr.
1966
Meets Japanese artist Yoko Ono.

Marries Yoko Ono. The couple stage their “Bed-In for Peace”
on their honeymoon in Amsterdam.
Second Bed-In in Canada, where they record the song
“Give Peace A Chance”.
Launched “War Is Over (If You Want It)” advertising campaign
in ten cities around the world.
1970
The Beatles split up.
1971
Releases “Imagine” as solo single.
Releases “Happy Christmas (War Is Over)” as a single
with Yoko Ono and The Plastic Ono Band.
1980
Shot dead outside New York home, 8th December.
2007
Imagine Peace Tower, a tall tower of light,
unveiled in Iceland as memorial.

Nominated for Children’s Peace Prize
by campaigner Desmond Tutu.

Injured in assassination attempt by the Taliban.
Flown in critical condition to the UK for treatment.
Her family moves to Birmingham, UK to start new life.
Receives Pakistan’s first National Youth Peace Prize.
2013
Founded The Malala Fund.
C0-wrote autobiography, “I am Malala”.
Meets Queen Elizabeth II and Barack Obama.

Named as one of Time Magazine’s Most Influential People..

Becomes youngest ever recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Becomes Pastor at church in Montgomery, Alabama.

Leads Montgomery Bus Boycott against forced segregation.

Co-founds Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).
1963
Organises non-violent protests in Birmingham, Alabama.
Leads march on Washington
and makes historic “I Have A Dream” speech.
1964
Receives Nobel Peace Prize.
1965
Leads Selma to Montgomery march.
1967
Speaks out against Vietnam war.
1968
Assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4th 1968.
1971
Some states establish January 20th as Martin Luther King Jr Day.

Unsuccessfully prosecuted for treason.

Leads sabotage campaign against South African government.
1962
Sentenced to life sentence for trying to overthrow
the government. Sent to prison on Robben Island.
1990
President FW de Clerk bows to international pressure
and releases Mandela. The pair work together to end Apartheid.
1993
Awarded Nobel Peace Prize.
1994
The first multi-racial election in South Africa
sees Mandela become President.
Publishes autobiography, “The Long Walk to Freedom”.
2013
Dies following long illness.
