DAVID MAYER
‘Being outdoors and observing wildlife in its natural
habitat inspires me as an artist and a human being’
David Mayer attended Leek Art School, and has
previously worked as a commercial artist and freelance
sculptor for the Royal Doulton. The inspiration for his
sculpture has its roots in his childhood- spent in north
Staffordshire, close to the Moorlands of the Peak District
National Park. Walking, climbing, working and living
within such an evocative landscape left a lasting
impression on the young artist who went on to closely
study wildlife, observing the changing seasons and
moods of the natural environment.
With innate respect for and love of wild animals and the
world’s wildernesses, the artist draws on all his personal
experiences. He aims to use the texture of the clay to
record fleeting moments that reflect the essence of a
creature and how it relates to its landscape. Each of his
beautiful sculptures offers us a glimpse of pure
wilderness.
David Mayer supports several conservation bodies with
sales from his work, including Panthera, the Scottish
Wildcat Association and SANParks.
