Term 2, Week 10 The week that was… Students had a fantastic time performing in the PCS Talent shows! We were very proud of all students who performed on stage. The Girls won ‘Most Coordinated Act’, the Boys won ‘Most Creative Dance Moves’, and ‘Mister Mut’ won the ‘Most Engaging Performance’ award. Mut, from 5JS, was very brave performing his comedy act solo to all 3 audiences! During writing groups last week, students enjoyed one of the following activities: Cooking sushi, making coconut balls or completing the Mentos experiment. Don’t forget no school this coming Monday as it is a Public Holiday. IMPORTANT DATES June 10th —Public Holiday June 20th—Hot Dog Day June 15th—Better Buddy Day (Wear purple) June 24th —Last day of School June 17th —5/6 Girls Footy (selected students only) August 25th—26th—Grade 5 Urban Camp WEEK NINE CURRICULUM LITERACY: In Literacy students will work on uncommon plurals and editing ‘muddled’ sentences. During writing sessions, students will begin writing a procedural piece about their writing activity from last week (Making sushi, Coconut Balls or Mentos experiment). NUMERACY: In maths sessions, students will participate in a range of activities that include the use of iPads, Maths games and teacher focus groups to learn about money and financial mathematics. Activities involve adding and subtracting money, rounding, budgeting and finding discounts. TOPIC - ’Why is it so?’ - This coming week students will be choosing an inquiring questions and using iPads to research and present their findings. This weeks sentence focus is: ‘We Are Vocabulary Explorers’ ‘Synergy’ Uncommon Plurals The vast majority of nouns in the English language are made plural by adding an "s" or "es" to the end of the word. For example, book, apple, house, table, door, cat, bush, boss are just some of the millions of words that become plural with the simple addition of an "s" (books, apples, houses, tables, doors, cats, bushes, bosses). It’s Cool to be at School! This week is week 10. Students should have completed their homework experiments and finished writing a report about their findings. Once completed, students need to hand in their project to their classroom teacher for marking! Students are reminded to see their teacher if they have any concerns regarding homework. Students are reminded of the benefits of reading each night and encouraged to bring their diary to school each day signed in order to receive an award. Students will be given fortnightly spelling words which they will be required to write into their school diaries. We encourage all students to practise these at home. Secret student prize: The first student who is able to tell their teacher what our joke of the week is, will get a prize from Mrs Dawson! 2017 School Planning As you may already be aware there is a new Primary School opening in Pakenham on Henry Road at the start of the 2017 school year. If you are considering moving your child to the new school can you please complete the slip below and return it to the main office ASAP, this will allow future planning to begin for both our school and the new school. We understand that traffic at school can be very congested, however student safety must come first. It is also important parents also use the crossing with their children as it sets an example to all students when entering and leaving our school SCHOOL ARRIVAL TIME - 8:45am Arrival time for PCS is 8:45am. It is crucial that students are not arriving before then as the school grounds are not supervised by staff. Recently there has been a large number of students arriving very early in the morning and being involved in incidences. Parents are responsible for their child’s behaviour prior to 8:45am in the morning. SOCIAL MEDIA Recently there have been a growing number of issues that have arisen from students with social media accounts. Accounts like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and many more are illegal for students of age 10/11 as the acceptable age is 13. Incidences that have occurred on these site will not be resolved via staff at PCS. National Buddy Day Wednesday 15th June WEAR PURPLE AND JOIN IN WITH THE FUN ACTIVITIES This year our school along with thousands of other schools around Australia, will participate in the National Buddy Day on WEDNESDAY 15TH JUNE. As you are aware, PCS runs a program called better Buddies, an initiative of the Alannah & Madeline Foundation, where older students are paired with younger students to help create friendships across the school and reduce bullying. National Buddy Day is a great way for our school to come together to further develop and grow Better Buddies and promote friendships in a safe and caring environment. The day will involve fun activities and a colouring/drawing competition with a winner from each grade level being announced at assembly the following week. Don’t forget to wear purple!
