COMPARING WORKS BY THE SAME AUTHOR - VENN DIAGRAM
Performance Standard 2B.C
Compare and contrast in a Venn diagram two literary works by the same author accordingly:
• Identifying themes: Consistently identifies theme(s) common to the selection.
• Comparing information: Consistently identifies/lists accurate textual similarities; consistently identifies
implicit and explicit information.
• Contrasting information: Consistently identifies/lists accurate textual differences; consistently identifies
implicit and explicit information.
Procedures
1.
In order to read and interpret a variety of literary works (2B), students should experience sufficient learning
opportunities to develop the following skills:
• Investigate literature from a variety of time periods/cultures/genres.
• Compare and contrast works by an author.
• Discuss works that have a common theme.
2. Have students review and discuss the task to be completed and how the rubric will be used to evaluate it.
3. After students have read two or more works by the same author, have each student create a Venn diagram (see
example below) that compares and contrasts two of those works. The student should use textual information
(e.g., elements, text features) to display how the two stories are alike and different.
Chicken Sunday
1. In Chicken Sunday,
the minorities are
black and Jewish.
2. In Chicken Sunday,
only one generation
is portrayed.
3. In Chicken Sunday,
the holiday involved
in the story is Easter.
Common
Elements
1. Minority
characters.
2. Strong family
values.
3. Long-lasting
relationships.
4. Characters
show
affection.
The Keeping Quilt
1. In The Keeping Quilt,
the minorities are
Russian Jews.
2. In The Keeping Quilt,
many generations are
portrayed.
3. In The Keeping Quilt,
many Jewish traditions
are shown.

Evaluate each student's performance using the rubric. Add each student's scores to determine the performance
level.

Story Elements
• Demonstrates ability to
identify story element(s)
common to the selection.
3
• Demonstrates ability to
identify story element(s)
common to the selection.
2
• Demonstrates ability to
identify a common story
element.
1
• Unable to identify a common
element.
Comparing Information
• Consistently identifies/lists
accurate textual similarities.
• Consistently identifies
implicit and explicit information.
• Usually identifies/lists
accurate textual similarities.
• Usually identifies implicit
and explicit information.
• Occasionally identifies/lists
accurate textual similarities.
• Occasionally identifies
implicit and explicit information.
• Seldom/never identifies/lists
accurate textual similarities.
• Seldom/never identifies
implicit and explicit information.
Contrasting Information
• Consistently identifies/lists
accurate textual differences.
• Consistently identifies
implicit and explicit information.
• Usually identifies/lists
accurate textual differences.
• Usually identifies implicit
and explicit information.
• Occasionally identifies/lists
accurate textual differences.
• Occasionally identifies
implicit and explicit information.
• Seldom/never identifies/lists
accurate textual differences.
• Seldom/never identifies
implicit and explicit information.
Score
Note: Implicit and explicit information could be placed in the “common elements” area in the Venn diagram. For
example, strong family values, listed in the common elements area in the sample Venn diagram, might have been
inferred by the reader.
