East Budleigh with Bicton Parish News July 2016 [email protected] Available online at www.allsaintseastbudleigh.org.uk/latest-news 2 View from the Vicarage July 2016 I have been thinking a lot recently about humility, and what true humility looks like. I am not sure that many would even see humility as a virtue these days. In our ‘winner takes all’ 21st century mentality I suspect many see humility as a weakness, a shortcoming to be eliminated, and yet, as Chris ans, that is what we are called to be. One of the finest examples of a Saint who exemplified humility was St Francis, and indeed his sister in Christ, St Clare. St Francis of Assisi wrote this ‘You can show your love to others by NOT wishing that they should be be er Chris ans.’ This quote was considered so untrue, so impossible that Francis should write such a thing that for many centuries the ‘Not’ was deleted from the text! The pious in the church deleted that ‘not’ as a simple mistake, because of course their own superiority meant that Francis could not have possibly said this… and yet he did. Francis and Clare delighted in all that we oppose, deny and fear; things like being insignificant, poor, disparaged, being outside the system of power and status. The biblical interpreta on of humility is probably best explained in the Bea tudes (Ma hew 5:3-12) which of course begin with blessed are the poor in spirit (Probably more easily translated as ‘blessed are those who know their need for God.’ When we are truly humble, we will of course become Christ-like as we will cease to judge others, just to love them as they are, and that is what we are called to do. Squashing our ego is a life long struggle, but knowing that we need to must be the first step. (To read further about the Franciscan views on humility I would thoroughly recommend Richard Rohr’s book en tled ‘Eager to love’ – The alterna ve Way of Francis of Assisi) Every blessing - Anne From the Church Register - May 20th - Thanksgiving Service and Burial of Ashes for Brian Horrell May 29th - Bap sm of Zachary Christopher Baker June 17th - Funeral Service and Burial of Leslie John Williams The Village Ac vi es Group The next free monthly coffee morning will be held in the Church Hall on Tuesday 5th July from 10am un l 12 noon. Molly Thank you to Peter Bowler, Harry Fowler, Brian Gosling and Ray Marrs for supplying all the photos of the scarecrow fes val for this magazine and to Peter for uploading them onto the East Budleigh website. 3 · Looking ahead, the next Friends’ One of the reasons that Penny and I chose to move to East Budleigh last year was the sense of community. The weekend (11-12 June) demonstrated what a wonderful village community we have. The Scarecrow Fes val was amazing … I have been told that it was “one of the best ever” and “the best since we moved to the village”. This is down to everyone who put out scarecrows and those that volunteered to help in some way from manning the Toll Bridge and the Church Tower, through people who had a s nt on a stall or exhibi on to the catering team. Those who went out and joined in the fun helped create a vibrant atmosphere that several visitors commented on. We had a great double page spread in The Budleigh Journal focusing on the scarecrows – next year, I hope the paper will highlight some of the other events such as the kni ng in the church, the Dog Show and the Classic Cars. I thank all the Commi ee, the Friends, the volunteers and everyone in the village for making the Scarecrow Fes val a great success. There are s ll some dona ons coming in but the first count showed that we raised over £3,000. In addi on, the Kni ng Group raised £417 for the charity Chris an Response to Eastern Europe (C2REE). event is a Harvest Supper in the Village Hall on Saturday 24th September at 6pm. The Award ceremony was held on Sunday, 12th July at an East Devon District Council Garden Party a ended by Councillors Buss and Barnard. Here are the judges’ comments: Parish Councils – 1. Community Award. East Budleigh/ Bicton – expansion of community shop The Judges saw the need for a community shop had been iden fied following closure of the East Budleigh Post Office. It started small with a porta cabin and its success showed that a community shop was needed and viable. The parish’s recent Neighbourhood Plan evidenced the importance of the community shop to the local community. As a result of fundraising, the new community shop is now a larger purpose-built premises selling a wide range of goods including locally sourced produce and local cra s. The shop is reliant on a network of volunteers and backed by the Parish Council’s ongoing moral and financial support. The shop is also a community hub with a sea ng area - and in 2015 the Parish Council paid for and installed a table tennis table which further helps in bringing genera ons together. The next Parish Council mee ng - takes place on Tuesday 26th July commencing at 7.30pm in East Budleigh Village Hall. Plans available for viewing from 7pm. As well as comple ng our assessments of all children’s a ainments and progress this year, we are also preparing for the new term and academic year. The new Recep on year children have begun their visits to school and the teachers are beginning to put their minds to “Blast Off”, the exci ng theme for all classes in the Autumn Term. Art Exhibi ons What an ar s c weekend we had at the Raleigh Federa on! The art exhibi on in Salem Chapel was a resounding success as expressed in the comments of many of the visitors. Here are just a few: ‘Wonderful art- takes me back to my school days!’ ‘So impressed with the outstanding quality of the art. Well done to the children and their teachers.’ ‘Children sang beau fully to open a fantas c exhibi on in special surroundings.’ ‘Wonderful to see all the children’s work displayed so beau fully. Really proud!’ ‘Wonderful display of children’s art. Great that it’s shared for all to see.’ ‘Loved it! What proud mummies and daddies. Thank you to all the teachers too.’ ‘So great to share their work with us all and to get together with O erton. Thank you.’ Date & me Friday 1st – Sunday 3rd July Tuesday 5th July Wednesday 6th July 6pm Thursday 7th July Tuesday 19th July (PM & evening) Friday 22nd July ‘It was lovely to see our grandson’s and his friend’s work. They all seem to really enjoy their work.’ ‘What a fantas c exhibi on! Vibrant and upli ing.’ ‘Wonderful, making learning such fun!’ We would like to congratulate the children on all their art work and say a special well done to all those talented musicians and singers who performed. (Especially to the very brave soloists; Freddie, Honey, James and Amelia who played their instruments at the chapel.) Access to the chapel was made possible by the kind support of Richard Smith and Marj Crone-Smith, thank you to them both for all their me over the weekend. Also, a big thank you to our ‘Parent Governor for the Arts’, Emily Glanfield, who helped to put up and take down the exhibi on. A note from The Arts Co-ordinator, Mrs Karen Somerfield A very big thank you to everyone who was involved in preparing for the art exhibi on of local ar sts at Drake’s! It must have taken so much work and involved so many different members of our community to make such a fabulous event. I do know that there were some adults who seemed to be busy in school for most of the weekend. I’m sure the event raised a lot of money for school (which will go towards reinsta ng the school bell) but most importantly gave the local community an opportunity to come into school and raised the profile of art. For full results see www.keverelchess.com/2016/06/ An impressive blindfold chess display by the American Grandmaster Timur Gareyev took place at Oxygen House, Exeter on the evening 9th June. He scored 8 wins and 2 losses while spinning many miles on a sta onary bicycle. This meant he did not have sight of the chess boards and had to keep all the posi ons in his head. (In many ways this was reminiscent of GM Pillsbury's famous blindfold display at Barnfield Hall, Exeter, April 1902, on the birth of the Devon County Chess Associa on. Some of his wins were against Devn county players.) The 2016 event was very ably organised by Dr Tim Paulden of ATASS, Oxygen House, secretary of the Exeter & District Chess League. The East Budleigh players present were very impressed with Grandmaster Timur Gareyev's display and could not match him even though they could see the board! The Leprosy Mission collects them as it helps raise funds for this charity. Used stamps are a waste product - so please save them and put them in the box. We didn't collect as many in the last 12 months probably due to the amount of emails these days - so every one counts. The ar cle below from the Church Times explains how the charity helps sufferers. Thank you - Pam Mayor. A new project, CREATE (Civil Society Organisations for Resource mobilisation, Empowerment, Advocacy, Training, and Employment), funded by a £925,000-grant from the European Union, hopes to tackle the stigma of leprosy and disability. The three-year scheme, which started in May, is designed to enlist Indian charities to work with local-government bodies to raise awareness both of the disease and the difficulties faced by those left permanently disabled. The programmes officer for the Leprosy Mission in England and Wales, Gareth Shrubsole, is co-ordinating the project. “The myths and fears are so strong that often people will hide their symptoms from their own family… Sadly, if left untreated, it leads to deformities,” he said. Leprosy, which most often occurs among extremely poor communities without access to clean water and sanitation, is curable with a course of antibiotics. But the stigma associated with the disease means that sufferers are frequently cast out from their villages and towns. to find work, or start their own small business. They will also be made aware of their rights. In another strand of the scheme, academics from the University of Leeds will begin research into ways to tackle the stigma that attaches to leprosy. Mr Shrubsole said: “This combination of rights awareness, vocational-skills training, and working with local governments and employers will help thousands of people to build a better future for themselves and their children.” Ms Yadav was among the lucky ones: she found refuge in a leprosy colony in the city of Allahabad, where she was given shelter and treatment. She was cured; but she has been left with a clawed hand and deformed feet. With the support of the Leprosy Mission, she now runs a stall selling bangles and tea from a wooden hut on the banks of the River Ganges. “I still feel the pain of being forced to leave my home,” she said. “I think of my family every day. But life is good now.” The Leprosy Mission was founded by an Irish missionary couple in 1874, after they had Untreated, the disease destroys all feelings in seen the devastation caused by the disease the fingers and toes; so victims of the disease during their time in India.
