Linoleic Acid (LA) and Markers of
Inflammation: what RCTs tell us
• In July of 2012 the first systematic review of the clinical
literature addressing the hypothesis that dietary Linoleic
Acid promotes inflammation was published.
J Acad Nutr Diet, vol. 112 (July 2012)
• Key Finding: The data from 15 clinical trials provided
NO support for the theory that diet LA promotes
inflammation in healthy humans.
• For example, circulating C-reactive protein (CRP) is NOT
significantly altered by large changes in Linoleic Acid intake...
*DRI for LA is 11-12 g/d for women; 14-17 g/d for men.
ILSI South East Asia Region
ILSI Southeast Asia Region
• Presentations at the ‘Conference on Healthy Aging in Asia’
– Singapore, March 2013
– ‘Inflammaging’ - age-related systemic inflammation
– Presence of obesity exacerbating chronic inflammation
– negative effect on healthy aging
• Identified as a key focus area for future research into
healthy aging in Southeast Asia
