Students who participated in the competition thoroughly enjoyed themselves. “Write a Book in a Day was fun. It taught us a lot about teamwork. Our book turned out well and I would like to do something like this again as it was so much fun. I hope the children in the hospitals enjoy it.” – Jan. “Write a Book in a Day is an experience that I‟ll never forget. Although it was slightly stressful, since we had such little time (8:30-5:00pm), we still managed to complete our exciting book. To be honest I didn‟t think I would have enjoyed it as much as I did. If I had the chance I would love to do Write a Book in a Day again!”– Jamie. “Write a Book in a Day was a fabulous experience for all of us. I can admit that making the book was hard, since there were limits. Although we had 9 hours to work on the book, most of us thought we wouldn‟t get it done, but with all our team members working hard, we made it! We will never forget this experience.” – Ruchita. “Write a Book in a Day was a great experience. This activity required teamwork and communication. The schedule was really tight and really required students to try their best. I really enjoyed Write a Book in a Day, it taught us the importance of teamwork and really required the team leader to know every members strengths and weaknesses. I would love to do this again” – Josh. Page 6 Day of the Dead Stage Makeup and Photography Workshop On Thursday the 23rd of June a group of Year 8 and 9 students participated in a Stage Makeup and Professional Photography Workshop Incursion. The workshop offered students an opportunity to engage in the professional techniques of special effects and advanced photography skills. Students investigated the Mexican 'Day of The Dead' tradition and used this as inspiration for their makeup designs. The amazing Miss Ashton utilised her extensive Stage Makeup experience to guide students through the process of applying stage makeup at a professional standard, before models worked with photographers to capture the theme. Several students focused on learning advanced photography skills to capture the success of the Stage Makeup. Focusing on the effects of lighting and utilising the cameras manual mode, students produced a variety of unique images. All students (even the boys!) participated fully and should be commended for what they achieved. Thank you to Miss Ashton and her incredible face painting skills, Miss Eve and Mrs Roberts for their help on the day. We were able to choose between four different faculties (Health Sciences, Humanities, Science and Engineering, and Business), and explore the different paths in University to help us decide what we want to do in the future. While out looking at the different faculties, we had the chance to ask questions about University life, and how it differs from high school. We also had the opportunity to participate in a scavenger hunt around the library, before going to eat lunch from one of the cafes on campus. We later went to the Science block, where we learnt to make small little jitter bugs out of toothbrush heads, which we later got to watch scramble across the table tops. Finally, the group was split up, with half going to the gymnasium, to participate in sports, and the other half choosing to go and look at a game created by Curtin students to help with career options in the future. Many thanks to the Curtin helpers for taking the time to come and give us a small insight into university life. It was a worthwhile experience, and we appreciate it very much. The class is a great opportunity for younger students to explore our art department and get a small taste for what our Visual Art Extension Program is like in high school. Our specialist art teacher Miss Ashton facilitated the class, teaching students how to draw a detailed lion and use bright chalk pastels to complete their image. Drawing such complex animals can be intimidating, however Miss Ashton went through step by step so that every student was able to learn and succeed in each new technique taught. Students were enthusiastic throughout the lesson, and worked hard to create their own unique artwork in their choice of colours. We will once again be offering another class in Term 3. Mr Bayliss – Health & Phys Ed Teacher Year 7 Political Campaign Educating Rita Touring Production Visit Year 7 HASS students have been working in groups of 5 or 6 this term, to launch an election campaign. Students were asked to create a speech, posters, pamphlets or rosettes to try and gain votes for their party. They then held a mock election to determine which party was elected. On Wednesday the 18th of May 90 of our Year 12 English students attended the Don Russell Performing Arts Centre in Thornlie to watch the touring production of the play Educating Rita. The groups had to choose one of the following parties The Australian Labor Party, Australian Liberal Party, National Party, Australian Greens or the Palmer United Party. The groups had to explore the parties view on unemployment, economy, trade, foreign policy, law and order, police, crime levels – solutions, education and immigration. With such a large group booking in place CVC students were offered a very special opportunity to meet the cast of the play beforehand. Well known Australian actors Colin Moody and Francesca Bianchi visited CVC on the afternoon of the 18th May to talk about their roles in the play, discuss the themes of the play and answer student‟s questions. Student‟s showed and huge amount of courage and determination to speak in front of the class and worked collaboratively to research their parties‟ views. Ms McCathie - Humanities and Social Science (HASS) Teacher Page 10 Visual Art Extension After School Update On Wednesday afternoons CVC Visual Art Extension students partake in an after school art class, where they are given the opportunity to work with talented artists and professionals in the arts field. Over the last month our Year 9 and 10 students have been working with tutor Rachelle Dusting to learn oil painting techniques. Students are creating self-portraits or portraits of Australian Idols. This is an exciting and challenging skill for students to learn, with their paintings already starting to take shape. Year 7's students are learning about sculptural forms and constructing busts in a 'Gabo' art style using cardboard. Year 8's are experimenting with different acrylic painting processes by mixing alternative mediums to create different effects in their images. Other Year 9 and 10 students are mastering the humble drawing medium of charcoal and will transform their grey scale portraits into fine detailed works of art. Miss Eve – Visual Art Extension Coordinator Maggie Dent Praises CVC Staff Adolescence can be a difficult time and therefore it is important for students, staff and their families to have a good understanding of what protective factors can contribute to good mental health. CVC has recognised Page 11 that teenage girls are especially vulnerable to peer pressure, negative body image, eating and mood disorders. To help counteract this negative input, as part of RUOK Day in 2013 the staff at CVC put together a music video to celebrate the importance of developing a positive self-image. The video was posted on YouTube and has since gone viral, receiving over 13,000 views! Maggie Dent (wellknown and in high-demand Australian author, educator, speaker, and parenting and resilience specialist) recently discovered the video and has since shared on her Facebook page, glowing in her praise of school staff going “all out” to support teen girls. Watch the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6f6-ILxoC0 Home Room Assemblies All students attend a weekly year group assembly where the focus is on celebrating student success, reinforcing positive messages, as well as visits from local agencies and partners. Students who have received 5 more positive behaviour recognition stars in a week are awarded with a „star of the week‟ certificate at assembly. Students who have received a certificate go in a weekly draw to win a $5 canteen voucher. The students‟ behaviour in these assemblies has been commendable with many success stories of students doing great things both in and out of the classroom shared to date. Year 7 (bottom) and Year 8 (top) 'Star of the Week' students. Page 12 ISSLANDS Afternoon Tea In 2015 the ISSLANDS (Intervention Strategies and Support in Literacy and Numeracy Difficulties in Schools) program was developed to support literacy and numeracy development and improve NAPLAN results for Year 7. Earlier this year CVC was awarded an MSSD (More Support for Students with Disabilities) grant, to become the lighthouse school of the south and enhance the program through staffing, resources and professional development for staff. On Thursday the 5th of May CVC hosted an afternoon tea for all parents and staff involved in the program. Parent feedback at the afternoon tea was very positive. Thank you to Ms Nelson, Mrs Farr, Mrs Stevens and Miss Selfe for your passion, enthusiasm and exemplary work in furthering this program for the benefit of our students‟ literacy and numeracy needs. Thank you to the LEAP students, staff and Ms Stephenson for superb catering and service on the day. Year 10 CVC Students - Finding Their Futures! As part of the Year 10 subject counselling process at CVC, 109 Year 10 students attended the annual Careers Expo at Perth Exhibition Centre to investigate the world of work, training and further education. With over 70 organisations exhibiting their services, the excursion was particularly useful for students to gain access to information from a wide variety of organisations. Students were able to use this opportunity to gain valuable information into their future career paths. This excursion is perhaps the biggest of its kind offered for upper school students. Our students were exceptionally well behaved, complimented by Expo staff and security for their uniform appearance and politeness. We hope this Expo has helped some of our students to think about the opportunities available, and to encourage them to work hard to achieve their goals. Mrs Qasem - Career & Transition Coordinator NAPLAN 2016 The staff at Canning Vale College would like to take this opportunity to thank parents and students for supporting us during the recent NAPLAN testing. To test 600 Year 7 and 9 students in language conventions, writing, reading and numeracy over 3 days is no small feat! To achieve this, the testing was undertaken in the school gymnasium. Year 11 Biology Excursion - Canning River Eco Centre On Wednesday the 4th of May our Year 11 Biology classes attended an all day excursion to the Canning River Eco Education Centre in Wilson. The centre is focused on increasing awareness and understanding of the Canning River and the Park through environmental primary and secondary excursions. Students assessed water quality data and discussed results in terms of the impacts on aquatic life and the long term management of the Canning River. Page 13 We had an excellent participation rate and all students conducted themselves in a truly admirable fashion, giving them the best chance of exceeding the minimum standard of literacy and numeracy required. This is a very important target for student achievement, and will allow the college to better target its programs to help support those students who haven‟t achieved this benchmark yet. Students who achieve Band 8 in a related NAPLAN area will automatically meet the minimum literacy and numeracy standard to achieve graduation in Year 12. Students who do not reach Band 8 in NAPLAN will receive further help and assistance to achieve the standard by the time they leave school. These students will sit the OLNA tests in Year 10, and as necessary in Year 11 and 12 to see if they meet the graduation requirement. Parents will receive the results of NAPLAN testing later in the year. food from all of the team at the restaurant. Makanannya enak sekali! The food was delicious!
