Reward Excursions International Competition for Australian Schools

Term 2 2016
International Competition for Australian
Schools in Science Results
It's with great pleasure we announce our complete
school performance in the recent International
Competition for Schools in Science, in which Year 7-10
students within our A+ extension group, and high
achieving Year 11 and 12 students participated. For over
30 years, ICAS has taken place annually in schools
throughout Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia,
Brunei, the Pacific region and South Africa. As well as
providing a healthy competitive environment and an
external source of recognition of achievement, the test
results also provide independent assessment of areas
requiring improvement. It is important to note that the
content contained within the competition sits outside of
the regular curriculum in schools, testing student ability
in the following skill areas:






Observing/Measuring
Interpreting
Predicting/Concluding
Investigating
Reasoning/Problem Solving
Analysing/Synthesising
In total 15 Merits, 32 Credits and 8 Distinctions were

Reward Excursions
In Week 9 & 10 of Term 2, our Year 7,8,9 and 10
students were rewarded to an end of semester year
group excursion. Students who had consistently
maintained exemplary attitude, behaviour, attendance,
and school uniform throughout the semester were
invited to attend the excursions.
On Friday the 24th of June the Year 8 students were
taken to Cockburn Ice Arena for a day of ice skating.
Students enjoyed playing limbo on ice and were treated
to a real life snow experience, with ice falling on to the
rink as they were skating.
On Monday the 27th of June nearly 200 Year 7‟s packed
on to buses and headed out to Laser Corps in the Swan
Valley. The day went off without a hitch as teams
crouched, ducked and weaved through obstacles while
trying to take down the opposition. Students were well
and truly worn out by the end of the day with many
falling asleep on the bus ride home.
On Wednesday the 29th of June the Year 9 group also
attended Laser Corps in the Swan Valley. After a
downpour of rain early in the morning the sun came out
just in time in time for another great day had by all.
Lastly on Friday the 30th of June the Year 10‟s were
taken to Perth Zoo. It was a lovely warm day, perfect for
exploring the zoo and looking at all the different
animals. Students also enjoyed viewing life size
dinosaurs as part of the Perth Zoo Zoorassic Park
exhibition.
On Thursday the 12th of May our Year 12 music
students came together for „The Support Act.‟ The Year
12 Cert III class, as one of their final performances of
their school career, combined their outstanding talents
to come together for one spectacular show to raise
money for Support Art – a registered charity established
by the music industry to provide a safety net for music
professionals facing hardship. Being aspiring musicians
themselves, students chose and felt connected to this
charity in particular. The concert set list included songs
from Coldplay, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles and The Rolling
Stones.
The following week (19th May) students in Years 7 to 12
hosted „Love and Other Things,‟ a night of amazing vocal
performances.
The final concert of the term took place on Tuesday the
28th of June and featured the outstanding talents of the
Junior and Senior concert band. We also introduced the
Dead Beats, one of our emerging rock bands with
students from Years 7 to 9.
In Week 6 our Music Coordinator Mrs Harrison
conducted music auditions with Year 6 students for
entry in to the specialist music program in 2017. With
nearly 50 students accepted in to the program we are
looking forward to working with another group of
talented musicians next year!
Keep an eye out on the CVC homepage for our schedule
of Term 3 music performances.
Term 2 Music Performances
CVC music students and staff have had a very busy
term, with three sold out shows taking place over Term
2. We are consistently impressed by the talent and
development of all of our music students and we
contribute that largely to the performance opportunities
we offer them throughout the year. They give students
confidence and opportunities for reflection and
improvement. Plus they love coming together to share
their talent with parents, families and guests.

Get Into Resources
Nineteen Year 10 students were privileged to attend the
annual Get Into Resources (formerly Get Into Mining)
event at Central Institute on Friday the 24th of June.
Over the course of the day students were given the
opportunity to interact with industry professionals and
trades people across the resources sector, highlighting
the roles and career opportunities that exist.
Each presentation was designed to be hands-on, to give
students an idea of what people working in the
resources industry do and the range of careers that are
available. The small group setting encouraged students
to interact and ask questions.
Students were also provided with the opportunity to tour
the simulated underground mine training facility, known
as 'The Cut', discover how drones are used in
exploration, use surveying equipment and engage in a
hydrometallurgy experiment.
mention to Caleb (Yr 12) for his exceptional skills,
winning 4 games. New player Ben proved to be a
valuable addition to the team, helping to raise the score.
Our only female representative Megan, stunned
opponents with her challenging moves. The three Year 7
boys demonstrated excellence in the game and Travis
had both students and teachers mesmerised with his
strategies.
Special thanks to parent Mrs Bosnyak who supported the
team on the day as well as CVC staff for their extensive
support of the CVC Chess Club.
The CVC Chess Club meets every Monday (recess) and
Tuesday (lunch) in Room A8 and is always looking for
new players.

There is a well-known expression in schools, „right
student, right course, right level, right result.‟ It is our
purpose at CVC to unlock your child„s potential by
ensuring they are enrolled in the right course for their
ability. This is crucial in ensuring student success!
Throughout Term 2 all Year 10 students participated in a
Career Program developed by our Career and Transition
Coordinator and delivered by our HASS teachers to help
prepare students for their 2017 Year 11 course
selections.
The purpose of the Year 10 Career Program was to
provide students with a greater understanding of the
new WACE (Western Australian Certificate of Education)
requirements for 2018 graduates and guide students
toward their chosen pathway in Upper School and
beyond. This coincided with the Year 11 subject
selection and counselling process that all Year 10‟s were
involved in.
Students explored the course pathways for VET
(Vocational Education & Training) and ATAR (Australian
Tertiary Admission Rank), and were provided with the
opportunity to investigate the multiple entry points to
University via TAFE and private training providers.
Junction Arts Centre (MJAC), 276 Great Eastern Hwy,
Midland 6936 from the 4th to the 24th of July.
Through participation in a range of career related
quizzes each student received a personalised personality
profile and career recommendation report based on the
results to help guide them towards potential career
opportunities. The Career Program concluded with
student devising their first Individual Career Pathway
Plan, in preparation for Year 11, and students selecting
their subject preferences for Year 11 based on their
Semester 1 report grades.

LEAP Open Day
On Tuesday the 14th of June the CVC LEAP department
opened their doors. As in previous years we welcomed
students from Canning Vale Primary Education Support
Centre in the morning, running a series of activities and
games for the primary school and CVC LEAP students to
participate in together.
In the afternoon we opened our doors to parents, family
and friends and celebrated the work that our LEAP
students have produced over the semester. The
enterprise products (soaps, popcorn, pot plants,
bracelets, balloons etc.) sold well, with visitors
commenting on the quality of the items for sale. Parents
also had the opportunity to speak with staff from
disability employment providers as a crucial first step
towards planning for the future.
There will be an opportunity for Year 10 students to
attend work placement during Term 4, Week 8 & 9.

Write a Book in a Day Competition
On Wednesday the 8th June 20 of our Year 7 A+
Program English students were given the opportunity to
participate in the national Write a Book in a Day
(WABIAD) competition.
Students were split into teams of two, and each team
tasked with creating a unique short story of 4000-5000
words for 10-14 year olds. The competition involves two
unique elements. The first element is the collaborative
focus: the books are planned, written, illustrated,
printed and bound by the team of writers. The second
point of difference is the story starter: Each team were
provided with the following unique set of parameters in
order to build their stories:

Year 11 & 12 Workplace Learning
During Week 6 and 7 of Term 2, Year 11 and 12
students had the opportunity to attend a work place as
part of the Workplace Learning program. Approximately
285 students attended work experience in a wide range
of industry areas including building and construction,
retail, hospitality, mechanical and child care experiences.
The program was extremely successful with a number of
students gaining part time or casual work directly from
their work experience host employer.
Students will have another opportunity to attend the
work place to further explore their career options during
Term 4 as below:
Year 11 - 2nd Placement Monday 7th November to
Friday 18th November
Year 12 - 2nd Placement (if required) Monday 3rd
October to Friday 14th October (includes week 2 of

The two books will be distributed to libraries in children's
hospitals around Australia.
The WABIAD competition is run by The Kids‟ Cancer
Project Write a Book in a Day Committee. Our two
teams are aiming to together raise $480 for children‟s
cancer research and children in hospital through
sponsorship. 100% of the sponsorship donations are
given to medical researchers around Australia in their
search for a cure for childhood cancer. To sponsor our
teams please visit:

The more money raised by the competition, the greater
the benefit to kids with cancer!
Students who participated in the competition thoroughly
enjoyed themselves.
“Write a Book in a Day was fun. It taught us a lot about
teamwork. Our book turned out well and I would like to
do something like this again as it was so much fun. I
hope the children in the hospitals enjoy it.” – Jan.
“Write a Book in a Day is an experience that I‟ll never
forget. Although it was slightly stressful, since we had
such little time (8:30-5:00pm), we still managed to
complete our exciting book. To be honest I didn‟t think I
would have enjoyed it as much as I did. If I had the
chance I would love to do Write a Book in a Day
again!”– Jamie.
“Write a Book in a Day was a fabulous experience for all
of us. I can admit that making the book was hard, since
there were limits. Although we had 9 hours to work on
the book, most of us thought we wouldn‟t get it done,
but with all our team members working hard, we made
it! We will never forget this experience.” – Ruchita.
“Write a Book in a Day was a great experience. This
activity required teamwork and communication. The
schedule was really tight and really required students to
try their best. I really enjoyed Write a Book in a Day, it
taught us the importance of teamwork and really
required the team leader to know every members
strengths and weaknesses. I would love to do this
again” – Josh.

Day of the Dead Stage Makeup and
Photography Workshop
On Thursday the 23rd of June a group of Year 8 and 9
students participated in a Stage Makeup and
Professional Photography Workshop Incursion.
The workshop offered students an opportunity to
engage in the professional techniques of special effects
and advanced photography skills. Students investigated
the Mexican 'Day of The Dead' tradition and used this as
inspiration for their makeup designs.
The amazing Miss Ashton utilised her extensive Stage
Makeup experience to guide students through the
process of applying stage makeup at a professional
standard, before models worked with photographers to
capture the theme. Several students focused on learning
advanced photography skills to capture the success of
the Stage Makeup. Focusing on the effects of lighting
and utilising the cameras manual mode, students
produced a variety of unique images.
All students (even the boys!) participated fully and
should be commended for what they achieved.
Thank you to Miss Ashton and her incredible face
painting skills, Miss Eve and Mrs Roberts for their help
on the day.

Year 10 Curtin Ahead Excursion
On Friday the 3rd of June, the Year 10 A+ Humanities
and Social Sciences class had the opportunity to go to
Curtin University as part of the Curtin Linkup Program.
We were able to choose between four different faculties
(Health Sciences, Humanities, Science and Engineering,
and Business), and explore the different paths in
University to help us decide what we want to do in the
future.
While out looking at the different faculties, we had the
chance to ask questions about University life, and how it
differs from high school. We also had the opportunity to
participate in a scavenger hunt around the library,
before going to eat lunch from one of the cafes on
campus. We later went to the Science block, where we
learnt to make small little jitter bugs out of toothbrush
heads, which we later got to watch scramble across the
table tops.
Finally, the group was split up, with half going to the
gymnasium, to participate in sports, and the other half
choosing to go and look at a game created by Curtin
students to help with career options in the future.
Many thanks to the Curtin helpers for taking the time to
come and give us a small insight into university life. It
was a worthwhile experience, and we appreciate it very
much.

On Thursday the 9th of June CVC hosted an after school
art extension class for Year 5 and 6 local primary school
students. The class is a great opportunity for younger
students to explore our art department and get a small
taste for what our Visual Art Extension Program is like in
high school.
Our specialist art teacher Miss Ashton facilitated the
class, teaching students how to draw a detailed lion and
use bright chalk pastels to complete their image.
Drawing such complex animals can be intimidating,
however Miss Ashton went through step by step so that
every student was able to learn and succeed in each
new technique taught. Students were enthusiastic
throughout the lesson, and worked hard to create their
own unique artwork in their choice of colours.
We will once again be offering another class in Term 3.
Year 8 Law Presentation
On Wednesday the 8th June a number of our Year 8
students were visited by Kerstin Stringer, principal
lawyer of Mandurah Legal. Kerstin spoke about
common, statute, criminal and civil law, what it‟s like to
be a lawyer and how to become a lawyer. The students
thoroughly enjoyed her visit and had lots of great
questions for her!

in activities such as face painting and creating Aboriginal
art paintings, wristbands and headbands. Students were
then asked to reflect on their day:
“Today was very inspirational. Before today I didn‟t
really know what the stolen generation was, I just knew
that it was bad but after hearing Bree‟s speech and
hearing her story, I had a better understanding of what
it was about and how bad it was. Today has opened my
mind to know how bad the past was and makes me feel
really bad for them.”- Josh, Year 8.
“The sorry day festival was a fun day and quite
emotional for everyone I think, personally, just hearing
everyone‟s stories and experiences I found myself
shedding a tear.” – Daniella, Year 7.
“I enjoyed the day because it was a remembrance and
realisation of what happened to our people during the
stolen generations.” – Halle, Year 8.

“Today was an amazingly inspirational day at Sorry Day.
It was very inspirational and cultural and you got to see
the true meaning and traditions. There was a girl her
name was Bree and she explained how her grandmother
was taken away from her family when she was under 18
months and how she only got to see her sisters again
when she was 14 years old. I felt very sad and
emotional and would hate to be taken away from my
family.” – Danielle, Year 9.

On Tuesday the 17th of May the CVC basketball team
attended an excursion to Banksia Hill Detention Centre
to play a basketball game against the Banksia Hawks.
The game, refereed by official Basketball WA umpires,
was hard fought and close throughout with the Banksia
Hawks overcoming CVC in the final quarter to take a
close win.
The game was played in good spirits, used as a reward
and incentive for the Banksia Hawks boys to make a
change in their behaviour and expel their energy in a
positive manner. The boys had the opportunity to
interact and have lunch together after the game. They
all commented several times how much they enjoyed
the experience and are looking forward to a rematch
later in the year.

Year 7 Political Campaign
Educating Rita Touring Production Visit
Year 7 HASS students have been working in groups of 5
or 6 this term, to launch an election campaign. Students
were asked to create a speech, posters, pamphlets or
rosettes to try and gain votes for their party. They then
held a mock election to determine which party was
elected.
On Wednesday the 18th of May 90 of our Year 12
English students attended the Don Russell Performing
Arts Centre in Thornlie to watch the touring production
of the play Educating Rita.
The groups had to choose one of the following parties The Australian Labor Party, Australian Liberal Party,
National Party, Australian Greens or the Palmer United
Party. The groups had to explore the parties view on
unemployment, economy, trade, foreign policy, law and
order, police, crime levels – solutions, education and
immigration.
With such a large group booking in place CVC students
were offered a very special opportunity to meet the cast
of the play beforehand. Well known Australian actors
Colin Moody and Francesca Bianchi visited CVC on the
afternoon of the 18th May to talk about their roles in the
play, discuss the themes of the play and answer
student‟s questions.
Student‟s showed and huge amount of courage and
determination to speak in front of the class and worked
collaboratively to research their parties‟ views. Everyone
pitched an amazing campaign and the votes were very
close.

Visual Art Extension After School Update
On Wednesday afternoons CVC Visual Art Extension
students partake in an after school art class, where they
are given the opportunity to work with talented artists
and professionals in the arts field.
Over the last month our Year 9 and 10 students have
been working with tutor Rachelle Dusting to learn oil
painting techniques. Students are creating self-portraits
or portraits of Australian Idols. This is an exciting and
challenging skill for students to learn, with their
paintings already starting to take shape.
Year 7's students are learning about sculptural forms
and constructing busts in a 'Gabo' art style using
cardboard.
Year 8's are experimenting with different acrylic painting
processes by mixing alternative mediums to create
different effects in their images.
Other Year 9 and 10 students are mastering the humble
drawing medium of charcoal and will transform their
grey scale portraits into fine detailed works of art.

Maggie Dent Praises CVC Staff
Adolescence can be a difficult time and therefore it is
important for students, staff and their families to have a
good understanding of what protective factors can
contribute to good mental health. CVC has recognised
Page 11
that teenage girls are especially vulnerable to peer
pressure, negative body image, eating and mood
disorders. To help counteract this negative input, as part
of RUOK Day in 2013 the staff at CVC put together a
music video to celebrate the importance of developing a
positive self-image.
The video was posted on YouTube and has since gone
viral, receiving over 13,000 views! Maggie Dent (wellknown and in high-demand Australian author, educator,
speaker, and parenting and resilience specialist) recently
discovered the video and has since shared on her
Facebook page, glowing in her praise of school staff
going “all out” to support teen girls.
Watch the video here:

Home Room Assemblies
All students attend a weekly year group assembly where
the focus is on celebrating student success, reinforcing
positive messages, as well as visits from local agencies
and partners.
Students who have received 5 more positive behaviour
recognition stars in a week are awarded with a „star of
the week‟ certificate at assembly. Students who have
received a certificate go in a weekly draw to win a $5
canteen voucher.
The students‟ behaviour in these assemblies has been
commendable with many success stories of students
doing great things both in and out of the classroom
shared to date.

ISSLANDS Afternoon Tea
In 2015 the ISSLANDS (Intervention Strategies and
Support in Literacy and Numeracy Difficulties in Schools)
program was developed to support literacy and
numeracy development and improve NAPLAN results for
Year 7. Earlier this year CVC was awarded an MSSD
(More Support for Students with Disabilities) grant, to
become the lighthouse school of the south and enhance
the program through staffing, resources and
professional development for staff.
On Thursday the 5th of May CVC hosted an afternoon
tea for all parents and staff involved in the program.
Parent feedback at the afternoon tea was very
positive. Thank you to Ms Nelson, Mrs Farr, Mrs Stevens
and Miss Selfe for your passion, enthusiasm
and exemplary work in furthering this program for the
benefit of our students‟ literacy and numeracy
needs. Thank you to the LEAP students, staff and Ms
Stephenson for superb catering and service on the day.
Year 10 CVC Students - Finding Their
Futures!
As part of the Year 10 subject counselling process at
CVC, 109 Year 10 students attended the annual Careers
Expo at Perth Exhibition Centre to investigate the world
of work, training and further education. With over 70
organisations exhibiting their services, the excursion was
particularly useful for students to gain access to
information from a wide variety of organisations.
Students were able to use this opportunity to gain
valuable information into their future career paths.
This excursion is perhaps the biggest of its kind offered
for upper school students. Our students were
exceptionally well behaved, complimented by Expo staff
and security for their uniform appearance and
politeness. We hope this Expo has helped some of our
students to think about the opportunities available, and
to encourage them to work hard to achieve their goals.
Mrs Qasem - Career & Transition Coordinator
NAPLAN 2016
The staff at Canning Vale College would like to take this
opportunity to thank parents and students for
supporting us during the recent NAPLAN testing. To
test 600 Year 7 and 9 students in language conventions,
writing, reading and numeracy over 3 days is no small
feat! To achieve this, the testing was undertaken in the
school gymnasium.
Year 11 Biology Excursion - Canning
River Eco Centre
On Wednesday the 4th of May our Year 11 Biology
classes attended an all day excursion to the Canning
River Eco Education Centre in Wilson.
The centre is focused on increasing awareness and
understanding of the Canning River and the Park
through environmental primary and secondary
excursions.
Students assessed water quality data and discussed
results in terms of the impacts on aquatic life and the
long term management of the Canning River.
Page 13
We had an excellent participation rate and all students
conducted themselves in a truly admirable fashion,
giving them the best chance of exceeding the minimum
standard of literacy and numeracy required. This is a
very important target for student achievement, and will
allow the college to better target its programs to help
support those students who haven‟t achieved this
benchmark yet.
Students who achieve Band 8 in a related NAPLAN area
will automatically meet the minimum literacy and
numeracy standard to achieve graduation in Year 12.
Students who do not reach Band 8 in NAPLAN will
receive further help and assistance to achieve the
standard by the time they leave school. These students
will sit the OLNA tests in Year 10, and as necessary in
Year 11 and 12 to see if they meet the graduation
requirement.
Parents will receive the results of NAPLAN testing later
in the year.
