William S. Leonhardt, 84, Was Executive;
Served on Boards of Various Companies
William Stroup Leonhardt, 84, of
Boca Raton, Fla., died on Tuesday,
September 26, at The Southern Ocean
County Hospital in Manahawkin.
Born in Philadelphia, he had lived
in Cranford for most of his life and
then in Westfield for 10 years before
relocating to Boca Raton in 1978. He
also maintained a residence in Long
Beach Island.
An employee of Commercial Solvents Corporation in New York City
for 35 years, Mr. Leonhardt served as
President of the company before becoming a corporate executive for
Reynolds Metals Inc. in Richmond,
Va. He worked in that capacity for 10
years before his retirement in 1986.
He was a member of many pharmaceutical and banking associations,
and of The Union League Club in
New York City, the Boca Resort and
Hotel in Boca Raton, the Baltusrol
Golf Club in Springfield and the
Roselle Golf Club in Roselle.
Mr. Leonhardt was also on the Board
of Directors of the Adrienne Vittadini
Company and A.L. Labs, both in New
York City, as well as Alpharma, Inc.
in Norway. He was also on the Board
of Directors of the Reynolds Metals
Corporation in Richmond.
He graduated from New York University in 1941 with a degree in
business and was a member of the
university’s Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity and its Alumni Association.
He was predeceased by his wife,
Evelyn F. Leonhardt, and by a son,
William S. Leonhardt, Jr., both in 1993.
Surviving are three daughters,
Geraldine Leonhardt of Springfield,
Janet L. Small of Cranford and Lynne
Toth; two sisters, Elizabeth Hutchinson
and Mary Moore; six grandchildren
and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Friday, September 29, at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in
Westfield. Interment followed at
Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Memorial donations may be made
to any local hospice programs.
Nora Wright
Norman J. Syvertsen, 74, of
Scotch Plains died on Wednesday,
September 27, at home.
Born in Staten Island, he had lived
in Iselin and Fanwood before moving to Scotch Plains in 1966.
Mr. Syvertsen had been employed
by New York Telephone for 43 years
before retiring in 1989 as a division
manager.
He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the
Institute of Electrical and Electronic
Engineers Inc., both of New York
City.
He served in the United States
Army Air Corps during World War
II.
Mr. Syvertsen attended Michigan
State College for Army Air Corps
training.
He was a member of Elks Lodge
No. 2370 in East Brunswick.
Nora Wright of Plainfield died on
Wednesday, September 20, at home.
Born in Rembert, S.C., she had
lived in Westfield for many years
before relocating to Plainfield.
Mrs. Wright was a Sunday School
teacher and a member of the Bethel
Gospel Choir and Boykin and Dow
Choir, all at the Bethel Baptist Church
in Westfield, where she was a member for 62 years.
Surviving are two sons, the Reverend R. Edwin Bennett and Theodore
Wright; a daughter, Martha
Hamlette; 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Services were held on Monday,
September 25, in the Bethel Baptist
Church.
Arrangements were handled by
the Plinton-Curry Funeral Home in
Westfield.

Michael W. Fox, Westfield Rotarian;
Former Board of Education Member
Michael W. Fox of Scotch Plains
died on Tuesday, September 26, at
home.
Born in New York City in
1947, he had lived there and in
Westfield before relocating to
Scotch Plains a year ago.
A certified public accountant, Mr. Fox was a partner
in the accounting firm of
Allorto and Fox and Company, L.L.C. of Westfield.
He was recently appointed as
Executive Vice President of Duxiana
Inc. of New York City.
Previously, he had worked as an
accountant for the firm of Coopers
and Lybrand in New York City.
He was awarded a Bachelor of Arts
Degree in Accounting from Baruch
Norman Syvertsen, 74, Retired as Manager

Blaine E. Ryan, 76, Was Employed
In Admissions Dept. at Seton Hall
Blaine E. Ryan, 76, of Westfield
died on Sunday, September 24, at
Western Medical Hospital in Santa
Ana, Calif., where she had been visiting relatives.
Born in Chicago, she had lived in
Union before relocating to Westfield
13 years ago.
Mrs. Ryan had been employed in
the Admissions Department of Seton
Hall University in South Orange until retiring in 1985.
Earlier, she had been a dental hygienist for a number of years, having
received her training at Columbia
University in New York City.
She was predeceased by a sister,

Surviving are five sisters, Mary
Odell, Virginia Harris, Geraldine
Thaete, Joan Schusler and Monica
Connolly.
A Mass was offered on Friday,
September 29, at St. Joseph’s Church
in Santa Ana. Interment took place in
the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in
Valhalla, N.Y., following a memorial Mass in St. Francis Chapel.
A second memorial Mass will be
held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 7, at the Holy Trinity Roman
Catholic Church in Westfield.
Memorial contributions may be made
to the American Heart Association.

Mr. Fox was a former President of the Westfield Regional Health Department.
He was also a member of the
Westfield Board of Education from 1992 to 1994.
He served on the Budget
Review Committee and as a

United Fund of Westfield.
He was a Westfield Republican
Committee member and Treasurer
and also served as Treasurer for many
Republican campaigns over the years.
Mr. Fox was a member of the
Rotary Club of Westfield and of the
Parish Council of St. Helen’s Roman
Catholic Church in Westfield.
Surviving are two daughters, Erica
Brooke Fox of Boulder, Colo. and
Courtney Erin Fox of Westfield; his
mother, Ruth Fox of South Hampton, N.Y., and two sisters.
The funeral was held on Monday,
October 2, at 8:30 a.m. at the Higgins
and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home
in Westfield. Interment took place at
Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

James DiBattista, 81, Owned Area Firm;
Decorated Navy Veteran of World War II
James E. DiBattista, 81, of Scotch
Plains died on Tuesday, September 26,
at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Berwick, Pa., he was raised
in Cranford and lived in Scotch Plains
for 40 years.
Mr. DiBattista had been the President and owner of the Woodford Corporation in Garwood between 1949
and 1996.
He was a Lieutenant in the United
States Navy during World War II. As a
naval aviator, he flew off the aircraft
carrier Intrepid.
Mr. DiBattista received the Purple
Heart, the Philippine Liberation Medal
with Two Stars, and the Asiatic-Pacific
Medal with Four Stars.
He graduated in 1941 from Fordham
University in The Bronx with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Government.
He was a member of the Knights of
Columbus, Council No. 1711 of
Westfield.
Surviving are his wife of 41 years,
Rose Mary Marrow DiBattista; a
daughter, Judith Rumpp, and three
sisters, Elizabeth Leonard, Grace
DiBattista and Ann Zielkowski.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Thursday, September 28, at
the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman
Catholic Church in Scotch Plains. Interment was at St. Gertrude’s Mausoleum in Colonia.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Dooley Funeral Home, 218
North Avenue in Cranford.
Memorial contributions may be
made to either the Fanwood or the
Scotch Plains volunteer rescue squads.

Annie N. Logie, 91
Annie N. Napier Logie, 91, ofWestfield
died on Wednesday, September 27, at
Runnells Specialized Hospital of Union
County in Berkeley Heights.
Born in Kerrimuir, Scotland, she
moved to Portsmouth, R.I., where she
lived until relocating to Westfield in 1933.
Mrs. Logie was a member of the
Garwood Presbyterian Church, where
she was a teacher in the Sunday School
program. She was also a member of the
church’s Ladies Aid Society.
She was also a child care specialist for
many Westfield area residents and physicians.
A funeral service was held on Saturday, September 30, at the Garwood Presbyterian Church. Interment took place at
Hollywood Memorial Park in Union.

John J. Kreger, Sr., 80, Former Marine;
Awarded Purple Heart in World War II
John J. Kreger, Sr., 80, of Scotch
Plains died on Sunday, October 1, in
the Plainfield home of his sister, Jean
Youngman.
Born and raised in Plainfield, he
had lived in East Orange before relocating to Scotch Plains 47 years ago.
Mr. Kreger had been a truck driver
for the Ballantine Brewery in NewPRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN:

flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine
splendor of heaven. Blessed Mother of
the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin,

your hands (3X). Holy Spirit, you who
solve all problems, light all roads so that
I can attain my goal. You who gave me

short prayer to thank you for things as
you confirm once again that I never want
to be separated from you in eternal

Wounded at Guadalcanal, Mr. Kreger
received the Purple Heart.
Surviving, in addition to his sister,
are his wife, Eileen Kreger; a daughter, Karen DeSagun; a son, John
Kreger, Jr.; three brothers, J. Frank
Kreger, William N. Kreger and Robert W. Kreger, and five grandchildren.
Services were held on Tuesday,
October 3, in the James W. Conroy
Funeral Home in South Plainfield.

Larry Yanick, 48, Was Director
Of Allergy Dept. for Medical Group
Larry Yanick, 48, of Colonia died
on Sunday, September 17, at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Plainfield, he had lived in
Edison for many years before relocating to Colonia 18 years ago.
Mr. Yanick was Director of the Allergy Department for several physicians at the Westfield Ear, Nose and
Throat Surgical Association and was
an allergy technician for doctors in
South Plainfield, Red Bank, Roselle
Park, Bayonne and Somerville.
He graduated from Middlesex
County Community College in 1972
and from City University of New
York in 1976 with a Bachelor of
Science Degree as a physician’s assistant.
He also graduated from Union
County College as a licensed practical nurse in 1991. In 1998, he graduated from the Capital University of
Internal Medicine in Washington, D.
C. as a Doctor of Integrative Medicine.
Surviving are his wife, Bonnie
Baka Yanick; a son, Stephen
Lawrence Yanick of Colonia; his
parents, Paul and Angelina Scarpelli
Yanick of Edison, and two brothers,
Paul Yanick, Jr. of Saugerties, N.Y.
and Frank Yanick of Edison.
The funeral took place on Thursday, September 21, at the Higgins
and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home
in Westfield, followed by a funeral at
Ask St. Clare for 3 favors: One

Mary M. Kirk Cunniff, 77, of
Westfield died on Sunday, October 1,
in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Passaic, she had lived in
Newark before moving to Westfield
in 1953.
Mrs. Cunniff had been a secretary
at Schering-Plough Corporation in
Kenilworth for 12 years before retiring in 1987.
She was a 1942 graduate of the
Drake Business School in Newark.
Mrs. Cunniff was a member of the
Holy Trinity Rosary Altar Society,
the Catholic Daughters of America
and the Amenity Club of Westfield.
She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Cunniff, and by a
daughter, Margaret Cunniff.
Surviving are two daughters,
Kathleen Shouffler and Patricia Dazzo;
two sons, William Cunniff and Thomas Cunniff, and two grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was
offered yesterday, Wednesday, October 4, in the Holy Trinity Roman
Catholic Church in Westfield, following the funeral from the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in
Westfield. Interment took place at

For Local Family Business For 52 Years
Eva Homyock Mc Intyre, 86, of
Westfield died on Tuesday, October
3, at home.
Born in Wilkes Barre, Pa., she had
lived in Garwood before moving to
Westfield 68 years ago.
Mrs. Mc Intyre had worked as a
sales and service clerk for the family business, Mc Intyre Lawnmower
and Locksmiths in Westfield, for 52
years before retiring in 1984.
She was predeceased by her husband, George Mc Intyre, in 1974.
Surviving are a son, Ron Mc Intyre
of Mountainside; two daughters,
Loretta Lazo of Delray Beach, Fla.
and Dolores Driscoll of Scottsdale,
Ariz.; two brothers, Andrew Homack
of Sarasota, Fla. and Peter Homyock
of Cliffwood Beach; a sister, Frances
Duda of Linden; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Thomas R. Trimble, 76, of
Westfield died on Wednesday, September 27, at Overlook Hospital in
Summit.
Born and raised in Elizabeth, he
lived in Westfield for 34 years.
Mr. Trimble had been a construction manager for Public Service
Electric and Gas in Newark for 39
years, retiring in 1988.
He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II.
He graduated from Carnegie
Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pa.,
in 1947 with a degree in electrical
engineering.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy
Costello Trimble, and a son, Thomas R. Trimble, Jr. of Carlsbad,
Calif.
Services were held on Saturday,
September 30, at the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in
Westfield. Interment was at Fairview
Cemetery in Westfield.

Born in Scotch Plains, she grew up
in Plainfield and moved to Westfield

Mrs. Godfrey had been employed
as an office worker with Howell Electric in Plainfield before she retired.
She was predeceased by her husband, Paul Godfrey.
Surviving is a sister, Anna “Sally”
Pfeiffer of North Plainfield.

John R. Pirolozzi, 86, of
Hillsborough died on Thursday, September 28, in the Somerset Medical
Center in Somerville.
Born in Italy, he had lived in Staten
Island, Plainfield and Scotch Plains
before moving to Hillsborough last
year.
Mr. Pirolozzi had been a supervisor with the Public Works Department in Scotch Plains for more than
30 years before retiring in 1976.
He had previously worked for the
Ford Motor Company in Englewood.
He was a member of the Musicians Union Local No. 647; Elks
Lodge No. 1585 in Mountainside
and the Catholic Golden Age Club,
the Senior Citizens Club and Father
John S. Nelligan Council No. 5730
of the Knights of Columbus, all in
Scotch Plains.
Surviving are a daughter, Madeline
Janssen; two brothers, Leonard
Pirolozzi and Joseph Pirolozzi; five
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A Mass was offered on Tuesday,
October 3, in St. Bartholomew the
Apostle Roman Catholic Church in
Scotch Plains, after the funeral from
the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch
Plains.
