Hillsborough County Government’s Electric Car Charging Stations Hillsborough County is doing its part to support the environmental and fuel cost savings benefits of electric cars. Seven electric car charging stations are being installed at County facilities with the help of a U.S. Department of Energy grant in partnership with Coulomb Technologies. Each station will have a reserved space for an electric vehicle, offering the opportunity for a fast charging 240‐volt rated plug in. A second space is reserved for low emission vehicles or a second electric car to charge with a 120‐volt system. Electric car technology offers the use of domestic energy resources and produces fewer auto emissions to improve the health of residents. The Hillsborough County‐owned electric car charging stations will be located at: Bloomingdale Regional Public Library, 1906 Bloomingdale Ave. in Valrico County Center Public Parking Garage (aka Pierce Street Garage) at 319 N. Pierce St. in Tampa ‐2 stations Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County, 3629 Queen Palm Drive in Tampa Jimmie B. Keel Regional Library, 2902 W. Bearss Ave. in Tampa Jan Kaminis Platt Regional Library, 3910 S. Manhattan Ave. in Tampa Plant City Courthouse, 301 North Michigan Ave. in Plant City During the two‐year grant period, use of the County‐owned electric car charging stations is free to the user; driver’s will only be required to pay the existing parking rate (if applicable) at the given locations. Each charging station will be connected to an online network at www.mychargepoint.net that allows drivers to use their computer or smartphone to locate stations nationwide, see which are in use and what service fees may apply. Each station will be able to charge electric vehicles from all major car makers. There are several electric cars models already on the market today with more on the way. On average, a four hour plug into a 240‐ volt charging unit will run an electric vehicle for approximately 35 miles at an electric cost of around $1.50. It is anticipated that electric car owners will plug in for a short time to top off their battery charge while on errands, and charge for longer periods at home and work.
