THE MUSICAL ADVENTURES OF FLAT STANLEY JR. CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS The following are capsule descriptions of some of the characters in The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley Jr. The only role that requires a male is that of Mr. Lambchop. Most other roles (including the role of Stanley) can be played by either a boy or girl. STANLEY is a boy who wants to do “amazing things the world has never seen before.” We will look to cast an actor who is charming and highly likable with a solid voice and acting chops. We will also be looking for an actor who has good control over their body and will therefore be able to control the flat suit. Vocal Audition: In A Tree, I Wish I Were (Part 1) ARTHUR is Stanley’s little brother (or sister, in which case we’ll change the name). He’s very serious about school and follows the rules. He has few solo lines and a short ballad. Arthur also delivers a very funny monologue, so we will look for an actor who has great comedic timing. Vocal Audition: Arthur’s Letter MR. LAMBCHOP is Stanley’s Dad. He should come across as gently authoritative and likable. He is required to sing well. Vocal Audition: Lambchop Lullaby, The Funny Side MRS. LAMBCHOP is Stanley’s Mom. She is smart and definitely in control. Mrs. Lambchop has several solos and is required to sing well. Vocal Audition: Lambchop Lullaby, The Funny Side CALEB, JACKSON, JACOB, COUSIN SOPHIE are all slumber party guests. All of these characters have spoken lines or vocal solos and should have strong voices. Vocal Audition: I Wish I Were (Part 1) BULLETIN BOARD is a magical creature, like the tooth fairy, who grants kids’ wishes but with a little twist. We will cast a character actress who’s funny and can be a little goofy. She should be able to sing reasonably well and carry a solo. Vocal Audition: Stanley’s Wish MRS. CARTERO is a sassy postal worker. She is fun-loving and extremely likable. She should have a strong singing and speaking voice and must be able to drive the energy of her scenes. Vocal Audition: Travelin’ Through the Mail 1 DR. DAN is a hard-of-hearing, overworked Doctor. This is a non-singing role, perfect for any kid who’s the class clown but doesn’t really sing. As long as the actor or actress is funny and loud, he or she will be successful in this role. NURSE BETTY is the long-suffering assistant to Doctor Dan. This non-singing role is a great place for us to feature an actress who’s not quite ready for a large part or who doesn’t have a strong singing voice COOL KIDS are the kids who fly Stanley like a kite and are non-singing roles. KING OF THE COOL KIDS is the ringleader of the cool kids, also non-singing. BIRDS are Stanley’s singing bird friends. The Birds should be strong female singers who can handle harmony. Also, it’s helpful if they are good dancers or at least graceful movers. Vocal Audition: In A Tree The CROWD is a large group of people who see Stanley off on his adventure. We will cast as many as possible into the Crowd. Vocal Audition: Travelin’ Through the Mail HOLLYWOOD AGENT is a slick, old-style agent. We will look for someone with a strong voice capable of carrying a solo. This is a perfect role for someone who is naturally funny with a big voice. Vocal Audition: Talent HOLLYWOOD ASSISTANTS are the assistants to the Hollywood Agent. This is a place where we can feature ensemble kids who can sing and are good dancers. Vocal Audition: Talent PASSERBYS/WANNABES are various folks who live in Los Angeles. We will cast ensemble kids who are not strong dancers in these roles. Vocal Audition: Talent SAMANTHA is Stanley’s friend who moved to Los Angeles. This non-singing role is a great feature for an actress who is highly likable, sweet, and can share a quiet and touching scene with Stanley. O. JAY D’ART is the curator for the Louvre museum. This non-singing role is a fantastic featured part for a performer who is funny and can create a character that is bigger than life. MONA LISA is Leonardo da Vinci’s painting come to life. This is a non-singing role and nice feature for an actress who can create a strong character. It would be fun if this actress can affect an Italian accent. 2 NAPOLEON is Jacques-Louis David’s painting come to life. This is a non-singing role and perfect feature for a performer who can create a strong character. It would be fun if this performer can affect a French accent. SNEAK THIEF is a world-class art burglar. This non-singing role is perfect for a younger performer who’s not afraid to be goofy. HERB WAVECREST is an entertainment reporter. KIKI is an entertainment reporter. ASSISTANT DIRECTOR is the assistant director on Stanley’s movie. These are non-singing roles ideally suited for performers of nearly any ability. This would be a great place for us to cast a kid who’s new to KOS to see how they handle themselves in a role. BIKINI WAHINI is Stanley’s co-star. This is a nice feature for a female performer who has a strong voice, moves well and is very likable. Vocal Audition: Surfin’ the Mail GO-GO-DANCERS are the extras in Stanley’s movie. We will look for strong ensemble performers who have strong voices and can dance or at least move well. Vocal Audition: Surfin’ the Mail 3
