Proprietary colony
A colony given a land grant from a monarch to an individual or family.
•
Royal colony
A colony controlled directly by the king.

Backcountry
Was a frontier region extending through several colonies, from PA. to Ga.
•
Middle Colonies
•
The Middle colonies had rich fertile soil. The climate was warmer with a longer growing season.
Soil was suitable for growing veggies, fruit and wheat.

Cash crop was wheat.
•
By 1700 manufacturing started to produce iron, flour, and paper.
•
There were also many artisans like shoemakers, carpenter, weavers, and the most important
coopers, or people who made barrels.
