HPISD FLES Curriculum – First Grade UNIT NAME UNIT 4: EL CUERPO Y LA SALUD ESTIMATED DURATION (AP Theme: Science and Technology: Health Care) 4 WEEKS 9 WEEK PERIOD 1 2 3 4 Unit Overview In this unit students talk about the body and health. Students identify and name the features of the face and body parts. Communicating pain, stating where something hurts, and expressing how they are feeling are demonstrated. Students identify major professions within the health industry. Students will list and categorize healthy and unhealthy food choices. They explore calendar time and further apply knowledge of the days of the week to telling the current date and the weather. Math concepts continue as students recall numbers from 0-30 and add and subtract within 12. The cultural piece focuses on physical activities in Mexico that promote a healthy lifestyle. Enduring Understandings The student will understand that: It is important to be aware of and tell about well-being, health, and feelings to communicate effectively in Spanish. In Mexico there are a variety of sports that promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles. Recognizing the role of health professionals and how they can help is vital while communicating in a foreign language. A globally competent citizen communicates effectively in at least one language other than English. Students understand the national pastimes of Mexico and common activities that might be found in an academic environment. Students discuss verbs associated with physical activity and learn key terms about sports commonly played in Mexico (ACTFL Standards 2.1, 2.2). Formative Assessments Formative assessments are employed by the teacher during the learning process in order to modify learning activities and to improve student achievement. Use these assessments during the learning process to check for understanding. Listen to a named body part and demonstrate where that body part is on their body. 1.3 Presentational Speaking-Present information about myself and state vocabulary using memorized single words and phrases, when supported by visuals. (NL) Present a drawing with the body parts labeled. List sports that they like and dislike. Categorize on a chart healthy and unhealthy foods.
