For: Math Teachers, Math Department Heads, Team Leaders, Math Curriculum Coordinators and Math Special Educators Teaching Rates, Ratios, and Proportional Reasoning in Grades 6–8 Featuring TEACHERS21 Workshop Trainer Polina Sabinin Response Proportional reasoning is a central component of the Common Core Mathematics Standards in grades 6––8. It is the pillar on which students build their understanding of multiplicative relationships, linear functions, as well as non-linear functions. This workshop will explore hands-on activities and problems that offer students the opportunities to make sense of these central concepts and to help them connect new ideas to what they already know. Many students’ misconceptions have their roots in the area of rates, ratios, and proportionality. The areas where these misconceptions are most likely to arise and how to select activities which allow students to grapple with these misconceptions and to correct their thinking will be discussed. Throughout the workshop, participants will be provided with a variety of refreshing Common Core aligned activities and strategies for use in their classrooms in developing students’ Mathematical Practices and stimulating further thought. Participants will: Explore the connections and differences between rates, ratios, and proportions. Experience activities from workshop different stageshas of thebeen students’ learning progression in the area of This filled. rates, ratios, and proportions.
