A STAR IS BORN
PRESCHOOL OUTLINE

VBS 2017
NAVAJO PRESCHOOL VBS 2017
Dear Preschool Leaders,
Last fall, long before I knew what Keith was planning for this VBS, I ran across the
phrase, “A Star is Born!” and immediately saw its potential as a VBS theme. When Keith told
me that the main character is Jesus, I thought, “How perfect!” Did you know that the Bible
actually refers to the Messiah as a star? Numbers 24:17 says, “I see him, but not now; I behold
him, but not near; A star shall come forth from Jacob, A scepter shall rise from Israel.”
These words were spoken by that infamous prophet with the talking donkey, Balaam, who was
trying to curse Israel and ended up blessing her!
We will begin by looking at those beautiful celestial bodies that showcase the infinite
abilities of their Creator and ours, then we will turn our thoughts to the preeminent Star of
All Time, who created time and transcends time, whose birth was accompanied by a
miraculous star, the Greatest Superstar ever, Jesus Christ!
You will be an astronomer, unlocking the minds of our students to the greatness of our
Lord and Savior! Basic astronomer’s supplies include binoculars, a telescope, an eye piece,
Star Charts, a flashlight with red lens, a solar filter, batteries, insect repellant, carrying case,
and a tripod. Most of these are optional; however, you will need a fake telescope (provided),
a flashlight, star charts, red cellophane and blue cellophane. These are listed in their
respective lessons. You may also want to google and print pictures from the Hubble telescope
and the Spitzer telescope to use in your classes. Even if you don’t print any, go to the
website, look at what our Lord has done, and marvel! These pictures will inspire you!
The VBS Schedule is designed to have four segments each day, each of which is
twenty-five minutes long. One segment will be devoted to the craft activity. A second
segment will be used to learn our memory verse. The remaining two segments will be used to
teach the Bible lessons. A separate lesson is designated for each of those two segments. For
example, on Monday you will teach a unit on the Bible and its authority, a second unit on
God’s Attributes and Creation, a Scripture Memory activity, and the Craft Activity for Monday.
We will also be following the same general outline as the elementary classes.
However, we will not be using the Time Line Puzzle. Your preschool classroom will also include
first grade children because their reading ability has not progressed sufficiently for them to
be able to understand and keep up with the elementary children.
Our memory verse for this VBS is a portion of Romans 6:23. We will focus on this verse
every day rather than try to learn a different verse each day. The Scripture Memory activity
file has the directions and discussion tips for teaching the memory verse each day. There are
extra game ideas listed and a suggested song for the verse that are designed to assist in
learning the verse. I strongly suggest using music as a means of teaching it! Many children find
it easier to learn something that is set to music. The preschool song is sung to the tune of
“Mary Had A Little Lamb.”
The outline for the week follows this letter. It tells which lessons and activities are
used each day. On the website, all the lessons will be grouped together. This will be followed
PRESCHOOL OUTLINE
2
VBS 2017
by a grouping of all the Scripture memory activities and another grouping of all the Craft
activities.
You will need to print out each lesson and every activity that you plan to use from
the materials provided on the website. A NOTEBOOK WILL NOT BE PROVIDED. You will be
responsible for providing all the materials for each activity except for the Scripture
Memory Poster, the inflatable globe, the flashing star, the glow in the dark Frisbee, the
jars of jewels and the telescope. These items will be provided by Navajo Missions Inc. The
puppet, Booker T. Worm, will be provided also. The telescope is white and will need to be
decorated prior to VBS.
Use the outline to assemble your VBS notebook. I suggest using a tab for each day and
putting the two lessons, the Scripture memory activity directions, the Craft directions and
discussion tips and any extra games or activity sheets you will use that day in that section. I
would create a section at the back for extra Scripture memory activities, and one for the
extra activity sheets and craft ideas in the crafts file. The first section should contain this
letter, the outline that follows this letter, the supply list, and any other tips and ideas you run
across. Also, I would use a large Zip-Lok bag for supplies each day and label it with the day of
the week that you will use them.
There is a PRESCHOOL Supply list that tells you what you will need for each day. Most
days will require some preparation of materials beforehand. You will find that reflected on
the supply list, as well as in the appropriate lesson segment. Instructions for preparation are
included in the lesson segment where they are used. I have tried to keep the supplies limited
to items that are inexpensive, readily available, and pack easily. Consequently, you will see a
lot of cardstock, white paper, paper plates and general classroom supplies, such as scissors,
glue, tape, markers, etc.
You will need to purchase a copy of the book, Bible Stories in 5 Minutes, preferably
the large size so that the pictures are larger. I bought mine at Lifeway for about $12.00.
This book will be used several days during VBS and also during the Christmas mission trip, so it
is a worthwhile investment. There are colored pictures that will need to be printed out for
some of the stories. I suggest printing on cardstock the pictures that go with the lessons about
Jesus’ resurrection, ascension and return on Friday because these will be used each year.
(Yes, these are the same pictures we used last year.)
In the crafts section, there are at least two craft options for each day. Because
preschoolers have such short attention spans, and a variety of learning styles, I have also
included song suggestions, and some kinesthetic activities, as well as activity sheets for each
day. These are included at the end of the VBS Crafts document. Activity sheets are to be used
as early arriver activities or when other activities have been completed. The song suggestions
are located in the lesson documents, following the two lessons for the day. The 3 CD set: “100
Singalong Bible Songs for Kids” has all the songs on it except for the Scripture Memory song.
This CD set is available from Lifeway for $9.99.
One of the basic rules in managing a preschool classroom where learning takes place is
to be prepared. With that in mind, I have tried to give you more than enough choices for each
day so you won’t run out of something meaningful to teach. When preparing for each day,
PRESCHOOL OUTLINE

VBS 2017
read through both lessons, the Scripture memory portion, and the crafts, as well as the extra
materials listed at the end of each of those documents. Choose the activities you prefer to
supplement the lessons and the Scripture memory. For example, if you prefer to do a coloring
sheet at the end of the first lesson instead of the suggested activity, feel free to do so. Use
your judgment where your class is concerned, and let the Holy Spirit guide you as to what will
be most appropriate for their abilities and spiritual understanding. A lot of preparation will
need to be done before you leave. TIP: GET YOUR SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS OR A GROUP OF
FRIENDS TO SPONSOR YOU! They can help you purchase and prepare your materials!
The GOSPEL will be presented on THURSDAY in one of your teaching segments. For
preschool children, we will present the information, but we will not give an invitation. Young
children who are routinely in church and who are regularly taught at home can understand
the gospel and be saved at an early age. On the mission field, we do not know how much
exposure to spiritual lessons these young children have had. In this case, after the gospel has
been presented, we need to tell the children to come talk to us if they want to ask Jesus to
be their Savior.
In conclusion, let me encourage you to be the star that you already are! Daniel 12:3
says, "And those who have insight will shine brightly like the brightness of the expanse of
heaven, and those who lead the many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.” You
have been chosen and called by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to introduce these children
to Him. What an awesome calling!
Let’s pray that the spiritual offspring among the Navajo (and across our nation) will be
as numerous as the natural offspring that God promised Abraham when He said, “the Lord
your God will make you as numerous as the stars of heaven.” (Deuteronomy 10:22)
Let’s reach for the Star! The GREATEST STAR EVER! With His help, we can change the
eternal destiny of these children! Apart from Him, we can do nothing!
If you have questions, please feel free to contact me. Keith and Kim have my number
and email address.
May HE bless the work of your hands,
Wanda Hartley

God. Watch the 40 minute version, then follow it with “Stars and Whales singing How Great Is

PRESCHOOL MONDAY LESSON 1 THE BIBLE
1
VBS 2017
SESSION 1: THE BIBLE AND WHAT IT SAYS ABOUT
STARS (BIBLE)
Background Passages: John 17:17; Hebrews 6:18
Prior to class: Decorate your telescope
Hi, Everyone! Welcome to VBS this week! My name is _________________________, and I am
an astronomer. This week we will be keen observers of our universe and especially of God’s
plan with it. To begin with, what is an astronomer? (Allow kids to answer) An astronomer is a
“scientist who studies celestial bodies” (Wikipedia) . What is a “celestial body”? The word
“celestial” refers to the heavens, so a celestial body is a planet, a moon, a star, or anything
else in space.
DISPLAY YOUR BIBLE
One of the tools I use in my work is my telescope. I can use it to look at celestial bodies that
are millions of miles away. My telescope helps me see details that I would miss without it.
However, if my telescope is not properly adjusted, the picture I see will be fuzzy. I have to
adjust the lens (pretend to do so), and then I can see clearly. God has given us a telescope to
help us with our lives. Do you know what it is? Let me show it to you.
1. THE BIBLE (USE A BIBLE FOR OBJECT LESSON)
I brought a special friend with me again this year. Do you remember this guy? (Take the
puppet out) What is his name? (Booker T. Worm) What is his favorite activity? (reading) What
is His favorite book? (the Bible)
Booker, tells us why the Bible is special.
(PUPPET SPEAKS): The Bible is very special because it is God’s special message just for us. I
LOVE THE BIBLE! It tells us about God. He’s the One who made us! He has a plan for us, and
the Bible tells us what that plan is! (Puppet turns toward teacher) Did you know that the
Bible has God’s Words in it?
(TEACHER SPEAKS): Yes, Booker, I know the Bible is God’s Word.
(PUPPET SPEAKS): Every word in the Bible comes from God.
(PICTURE OF A PROPHET WRITING OR STUDYING)
(PUPPET SPEAKS): God told some men what to say and they wrote it down. These men did
not live at the same time or the same place. They didn’t know each other. They didn’t even
speak the same language! They wrote in three different languages.
(PUPPET SPEAKS): It was written over a period of 1500 years, from around 1400B.C. until
95A.D.
PRESCHOOL MONDAY LESSON 1 THE BIBLE
2
VBS 2017
That’s a LONG time! Even though they didn’t know each other or speak the same language,
and it took a long time to write, they all wrote about the same thing. God had to tell them
what to say because they couldn’t just make it up! I f they had made it up, they wouldn’t
have written about the same thing!
(TEACHER SPEAKS): What is that thing they wrote about, Booker?
(PUPPET SPEAKS): They wrote about God and His special plan! God promised to send His Son,
Jesus, and the men who wrote the Bible tell us all about it!
(PUPPET SPEAKS): This may not seem like a big deal to you, but no other book has been
around this long! God has taken very special care of this book through all of these years to
make sure that we have HIS Words! There is no book on earth like the Bible!
GOD GAVE US THE BIBLE TO TEACH US HOW GREAT HE IS AND HOW MUCH HE LOVES US.
(PUPPET SPEAKS): Do you know what else is special about the Bible, Ms _________________?
(TEACHER SPEAKS): What else is special, Booker?
(PUPPET SPEAKS): The Bible tells God’s promises to us and it is always, always true! We
can believe it because it is God’s special message to us. God wants us to know what His plan
is, so He always tells us the truth! Look at what God said:
(POSTER) John 17:17 “Your Word is truth”
(PUPPET SPEAKS): Jesus said, “Your Word is truth” (John 17:17). Gods Word, the Bible, is
truth – every word of it.
(PUPPET SPEAKS): And you know what else the Bible says? It says God can’t lie! He is perfect
and He is always good, so He cannot tell a lie. The Bible says so.
(POSTER) Hebrews 6:18 It is impossible for God to lie.
(PUPPET SPEAKS): We can always believe what the Bible says, because God can’t lie so the
Bible has to be true.
(TEACHER SPEAKS): That’s pretty awesome, Booker! The Bible is a big, thick book!
(PUPPET SPEAKS): It is a big book, but God divided it into parts to make it easier for us. The
Bible has two parts: The Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament is the first
part of the Bible, and it is the oldest. The New Testament is in the back of the Bible. (Show
them the two parts in your Bible.) And then he divided those two parts into smaller parts and
named them after the men who wrote that part down. This makes it a lot easier for us to find
the place where we are supposed to be reading.
(PUPPET SPEAKS): Ms. _______________________, can I go back to my book now? I want to
read some.
(TEACHER SPEAKS): Of course you can, Booker. We will see you later this week. Kids, tell
Booker goodbye!

REINFORCEMENT ACTIVITIES:
1. MAKE TELESCOPES
Supplies: 8 ½” x 11” cardstock in two different colors, packaging tape, crayons or markers,
space stickers (optional)
Give each child one sheet of cardstock to decorate.
Roll the decorated cardstock into a circle with long sides together. Use packaging tape to tape
the sides together. Cut a 3” x 8 ½” strip of the other color of cardstock. Tape it around one
end of the cardstock tube. Write child’s name on the telescope.
TEACHING TIE-IN: A telescope helps us to look more closely at the beautiful things in space
that God made. When you use your telescope to look at the moon and stars God made,

2. BIBLE BASICS
Divide the children into two groups. Assign one group the word “new” and the other group
the word “old”. Tell them to say their word when you point to their group.
Hold up your Bible.
Ask: What is this book called? (The Bible) Who wrote it? (God told men what to write)
The Bible is divided into two parts. The first part is called the Old Testament (Point to the
group for “Old”.) What is it called?(Old) Show them the OT
The second part is called the New Testament (Point to the group for “New”.) What is it
called? (New) Show them the NT
Which part do you think is older? (Point to “Old” group)
Which part do you think is newer? (Point to “New” group)
Which part was written before Jesus was born? (Point to “Old” group)
Which part was written after Jesus was born? (Point to “New” group)
Which part has the story of Jesus’ birth in it? (Point to “New” group)
Which part is bigger? (Point to “Old” group)
The OLD (Point to “Old” group) Testament has 39 books in it.
The NEW (Point to “New” group) Testament has 27 books in it.
We need to remember that this is God’s Book. He tells us about Himself in here. He wants us
to love the Bible and learn what it says. He wants
3. PLAY A GAME
Bible Pass
Say: God loves everyone very much. He wants us to share His Word with others. We are
going to play a game where we will pass a Bible around. When we give the Bible to the
person beside us, we are sharing God’s Word with them.
How to Play: This game is similar to musical chairs. Children will stand in a circle and
pass a small Bible around the circle as the music plays. When you stop the music, the
person who is holding the Bible (not sharing God’s Word) has to sit down.

SESSION GOD MADE EVERYTHING, INCLUDING
STARS
Background Passages: Genesis 1, 2
Prior to class: If you will be doing the Creation Book activity, prepare the cardstock books.
Have you ever wondered where the stars and the sun and moon came from? Have you ever
wondered where everything came from? Where did the plants and trees come from? Where
did the animals come from? Or water? Or YOU?
HOLD UP BIBLE
The Bible tells us where everything comes from. In fact, that is the very first thing the Bible
tells us.
OPEN BIBLE TO GENESIS 1
The very first verse in the Bible says, “In the beginning, God made the heavens and the
earth.”
POSTER GENESIS 1:1 NASB In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
The first book in the Bible is Genesis, and the first three chapters tells us how God made
everything, even people. I’m going to read about it in this book so you can see the pictures.
HOLD UP BOOK THEN READ: Bible Stories in 5 Minutes p.1-9 “In the Beginning”
Do you remember what day God made the stars? (the fourth day) What else did He make that
day? (Sun and Moon) Why do you think He made the sun, moon and stars? (Because we need
them, but especially because He wants to show us how awesome He is!)
Adam and Eve got to know God very well in the Garden. What do you think they talked about?
Do you think God told them some things about Himself? What are some of those things? (You
will receive various responses; the attributes below need to be emphasized)
All-seeing – He sees everything
All-knowing - He knows everything He even knows the thoughts that we think!
He has always existed. No one made God. Before there was anything, God was already alive.
God is everywhere.
God is holy and perfect. He has never sinned.

He is also completely fair.
He is All-powerful – He can do everything. God is so powerful that He can make anything. Do
you know what is special about God’s power? He doesn’t have to use His hands to make stuff!
He uses His voice! All He does is speak, and it just appears! He doesn’t even need anything to
make it out of! He can just make it from nothing! Isn’t that really amazing!!!
There is only one God. There has never been another god like Him and there never will be.
LET’S PRAY AND THANK GOD FOR MAKING US!

REINFORCEMENT ACTIVITIES:
1. Make My Creation Books
Prior to class: Fold two pieces of the cardstock in half, short ends together. Slit the
cardstock along the fold to the halfway point. Separate the two pieces of cardstock. Hold the
cardstock sheets perpendicular to each other, so that the slit is at the top of one sheet and
the bottom of the other. Slide the two slits together to form a book. Use a piece of scotch
tape along the slits to secure the book. Open the book to the first two pages and write “God
Made Daytime” across the top of the pages. On the center pages write, “God Made
Nighttime”. On the last two pages write “God Made the Land and Plants”. On the front cover
write “My Creation Book” and on the back cover write “God Made the Ocean”.
Supplies: 2 sheets of white cardstock per child, scissors, scotch tape, various colors of
construction paper, including blue, yellow and black, glue sticks, star and planet stickers
(optional)
1. Give each child one of the books that you made. Show them how to open it to the first
two pages and lay the book flat. Instruct them to create a picture of daytime by
tearing construction paper into shapes to represent the sun, sky and clouds. Let the
kids glue the construction paper to the pages.
PRESCHOOL MONDAY LESSON 2 CREATION

VBS 2017
2. Let children flip to the center of the book and make a picture of night by tearing black
construction paper. You may also use star stickers or stickers of other celestial bodies.
(optional)
3. Let children turn to the next two pages and use torn construction paper pieces to
make a picture of land containing plants such as trees, flowers. You can also include
animals.
4. Let children flip to the back cover and use blue construction paper to represent the
ocean and other colors of construction paper to make sea creatures.
5. Write their name on the bottom of the front cover.
TEACHING TIE-IN: Tell children that God made everything. Talk about the kinds of things God
made for each picture, such as different kinds of plants and animals, etc.
2. Play a Game:
Back to the Beginning
This game is played like “Mother May I?” Use a strip of tape to create a long line. This line is
“The Beginning.” Have children line up along the line. You will give a command. Prior to
following your command, the child must say, “God Created Everything.” If they forget to say
it, they must go back to The Beginning. When someone goes back to the beginning, everyone
says, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
PRESCHOOL TUESDAY LESSON 3 THE FALL

VBS 2017
VBS 2017 PRESCHOOL 3 TUESDAY FALL SESSION –
FALLEN STARS
Background Passages: Genesis 2-3
Prior to class:
Good evening, my fellow astronomers! I’m so glad you have come to VBS!
SHOW YOUR TELESCOPE
In my work, I use my telescope a lot.
Yesterday, I told you that God has given us a different kind of telescope to use to look at His
plan for us. What is it?
HOLD UP YOUR BIBLE
Yesterday, I said that God made the sun, moon and stars. Have any of you ever seen a
“shooting star”? It looks like a bright light streaking across the sky at night. It looks like it is
falling to the ground. Today we are going to talk about something really big that happened a
long time ago. We call it “The Fall”.
But before we talk about it, who remembers what we talked about yesterday? (You will
receive various responses; the attributes below as well as the creation, especially of Adam
and Eve, need to be emphasized)
God is holy and perfect. He has never sinned.
God is good and kind. He is very loving. He is also completely fair.
He is All-powerful – He can do everything
He created everything, including people. The first two people were Adam and Eve.
When God made everything, it was perfect. But it didn’t stay that way.
Do you know what “perfect” means? It means everything is exactly right. There was nothing
wrong at all.
ASK: Do you know why? (Sin entered the world)
We can read all about how sin entered the world in Genesis chapter 3. We will also find out
what sin is today.
(HOLD UP YOUR BIBLE OPENED TO GENESIS 3)
We call that the FALL.
PRESCHOOL TUESDAY LESSON 3 THE FALL
2
VBS 2017
The Bible says that sin came into the world through one man.
POSTER Rom 5:12 NASB through one man sin entered into the world
Let’s find out how it happened.
READ: Bible Stories in 5 Minutes p.10-16
ASK: What did Adam and Eve do that was wrong?
They ate the fruit God told Adam not to eat! When they ate that bite, something really bad
happened. Sin entered the world. SIN IS WHEN WE DISOBEY GOD. God told them not to eat
from the tree, and they did it anyway. They disobeyed. That is sin.
So now the perfect world they lived in wasn’t perfect anymore. Now there was good and bad
in it.
From that time until now, we all have to live with sin. God’s special book, the Bible, tells us
WE ALL SIN. For instance, have you ever done something your mommy or daddy told you not
to do? God tells us to obey our parents. So when we disobey them, that is sin.
All the bad stuff that happens in the world is because of sin. In the perfect world God
created, no one got sick. No one died. No one was sad. No one cried. No one disobeyed. It
was all very good. But now bad stuff and sad stuff happen. And it all started with Adam and
Eve disobeying God.
Adam and Eve had children. All of their children did things that didn’t please God. SIN is
anything that doesn’t please God. After Adam and Eve sinned, every person who was ever
born sinned and didn’t please God. The only person who has never sinned is Jesus. All the
rest of us have sinned!
(PICTURE OF GIFT WITH “GOD’S PLAN” WRITTEN ON THE GIFT. THERE NEEDS TO BE A
HEART SOMEWHERE ON THIS PICTURE)
BUT, God loved Adam and Eve and us so much that God had a plan! The plan is for us too.
This week we are going to talk about that plan.
LET’S PRAY AND THANK GOD FOR HAVING A PLAN. ALSO ASK GOD TO HELP US OBEY.
We need to ask God to help us obey.
Let’s sing a song about that. (Optional)
BOOKER T. WORM LEARNS THAT THE BIBLE IS OUR AUTHORITY

PUPPET SPEAKS: I am so angry, Ms. ______________!
TEACHER SPEAKS: What’s wrong?
PRESCHOOL TUESDAY LESSON 3 THE FALL

PUPPET SPEAKS: My mom grounded me!
TEACHER SPEAKS: I’m sorry to hear that, Booker. Why did she ground you?
PUPPET SPEAKS: Well, it’s a long story!
TEACHER SPEAKS: Why don’t you tell me about it?
PUPPET SPEAKS: Well, yesterday I failed my math test and my teacher sent my mom a note.
It’s just not fair!
TEACHER SPEAKS: Did you study for your test?
PUPPET: (Hangs head and nods no slowly)
TEACHER SPEAKS: Does your mom know you didn’t study?
PUPPET SPEAKS: Yes, she knows! I don’t like math! Last week I decided I’m never going to
study math again!
TEACHER SPEAKS: Really? Have you been doing your math homework?
PUPPET SPEAKS: Nope! No math homework for me!
TEACHER SPEAKS: What does your mom say about that?
PUPPET SPEAKS: She got really angry with me, and then she grounded me! Now I can’t play
with my friends, or watch TV, or anything! It’s just not fair!
TEACHER SPEAKS: Let’s see if I understand this correctly. First, you decided not to do your
math homework anymore. Then you didn’t study for your math test. And then you failed your
math test!
PUPPET SPEAKS: That’s right! Who needs math anyway! I’m never doing another math
problem in my whole life!
TEACHER SPEAKS: Booker, I think you need some help from the Bible.
PUPPET SPEAKS: Why do you say that, Ms. ______________?
TEACHER SPEAKS: Because you have a problem that’s bigger than your math problem! Your
mom and your teacher know some things you don’t know. You see, there are always going to
be times in your life when you will need to know how to work a math problem. How will you
even be able to buy a snack if you don’t know how to count your money? But your problem is
bigger than that!
What are you talking about, Ms.________________? What kind of problem do I have? And how
can the Bible help me? Does the Bible know my mom and my teacher?
Your problem is your attitude, Booker, and the Bible can help you with it. The Bible was
written by God, who made the rules, and He expects us to obey Him. The Bible is the
authority on everything it teaches about. That means whatever it says goes.
PRESCHOOL TUESDAY LESSON 3 THE FALL
4
VBS 2017
PUPPET SPEAKS: I know God wrote the Bible, but I guess I never thought about Him making
rules that we need to obey. What does the Bible say about my mom and my teacher? I haven’t
read that part yet.
TEACHER SPEAKS: The Bible tells children to obey their parents. You need to do what the
Bible says and obey your mom. In fact, it says we should obey those who are in authority over
us.
PUPPET SPEAKS: I’m confused. Who are people in authority over us?
TEACHER SPEAKS: A person in authority is the person in charge. At school, that would be your
teacher, your coach, and your principal. Policemen are in charge of making sure people obey
the laws, so they are in authority. Your pastor is an authority because he is in charge of your
church. Your parents and grandparents are in charge or taking care of you, so they are in
authority too.
PUPPET SPEAKS: So when I obey those who are in charge over me, I am obeying the Bible and
God.
TEACHER SPEAKS: That’s right, Booker! Whatever God says in the Bible goes, because God is
in charge over us.
PUPPET SPEAKS: Then I guess I need to apologize to my mom. I want to obey God.
TEACHER SPEAKS: Good idea, Booker! Go home and get that straightened out, and we will see
you later this week.
LET’S PLAY A GAME:
Today we are going to play a game called Bible Says. If the Bible tells you to do something,
you should do it. If the Bible tells you not to do something, you shouldn’t do it. In this game,
if I say, “The Bible says to obey your parents,” you should put your thumbs up and nod your
head yes, because that is true. The Bible does say to obey your parent. If I say, “The Bible
says to say mean things about your sister,” you should put your thumbs down and nod your
head no, because the Bible does not say that.
If you are right, you get to move forward three giant steps. If you are wrong, you stay where
you are.
Listen carefully for what the Bible says. The first ones to get to me win. Ready? Let’s begin.

lesson above to make the face out of white paper. Cut the round circle (points A to B) and
the mouth (Line D). Fold Sections E & F. DO NOT CUT LINE C.
Today I want to show you something special about my telescope. Sometimes astronomers use
lens filters. (Use a rubber band to hold a piece of red cellophane in place over the end of
your telescope.) For example, if I want to see which stars send out a certain color of light, I
can put a lens filter on my telescope and block out the other colors of light. (If you have
time, you can let each child look through your telescope, and even change to a different
color so they can see the difference.)
Do you remember what telescope we use to look at God’s plan for us?
HOLD UP YOUR BIBLE
Just as an astronomer focuses on only one thing, God wants us to focus on one thing – His
Son, Jesus!
Yesterday, we talked about Adam and Eve and how sin came into the world. Do you remember
what sin is? (Let kids answer, then remind them that it is anything we do, say or think that
God doesn’t like.)
Ever since Adam and Eve sinned, every person has been born with the ability to sin, and
every person has sinned. But God made a plan to deal with sin. That plan included sending His
Son Jesus. It would be a very long time before Jesus came. It was about 4000 years from the
time Adam and Eve sinned until Jesus came! That’s a very, long time! But during those years,
God kept sending some men called “prophets” to remind them that one day His Son was going
to come and take care of sin. Some of those men were Isaiah, Jeremiah, Micah, Malachi,
Daniel and many, many more!
One of those prophets was alive when Jesus was born! His name is Zechariah. He had a son
who was a prophet too. Let’s look at Zechariah’s story.
“(Fold the paper in half horizontally)
Zechariah was an old man who worked at the temple. His wife was named Elizabeth. They
didn’t have any children.
One day, Zechariah was working in the temple. Many people were outside praying. They were
waiting for Zechariah to come out and lead them in worship
(Cut figure from A to B)
PRESCHOOL TUESDAY LESSON 4 THE PROMISE 2
VBS 2017
But while Zechariah was inside, an angel came to him. Zechariah had never seen an angel
before, and he was scared.
Fold figure in half again.
But the angel said, “Don’t be afraid, Zechariah. God has sent me to tell you that you and
Elizabeth will have a baby. The baby will be a boy, and you should name him John. He will be
a great man of God.”
Cut figure along line C.
This news was hard for Zechariah to believe. “How do I know you’re telling me the truth?” he
asked.
“You don’t believe me,” said the angel. “You won’t be able to talk until what I’ve said comes
true.” Would you believe a message you heard from an angel? (Let children respond.)
Unfold the figure.
Fold up figure’s eyelids.
The people outside were still waiting for Zechariah. What do you think they thought when
Zechariah took so long? (Let children respond.)
When Zechariah finally came out, he couldn’t talk. He could only motion with his hand. How
do you think Zechariah felt when he tried to talk, but no words came out? What do you think
the people thought them? (Let the children respond.)
The people knew Zechariah had seen something amazing.
Fold figure again and cut along line D.
The angel’s promise came true. Zechariah and Elizabeth did have a baby. When the day came
to name the baby, neighbors and family came. It was a very special day. But Zechariah still
couldn’t talk. So everyone decided to name the baby Zechariah, after his father.
Open figure slightly, and with index finger, push section E inside and crease it.
Elizabeth said, “We’ll name him John.”
But everyone else said, “He should be named after someone in your family. And no one in your
family is named John.” Finally they asked Zechariah what he wanted to name the baby.
Open figure slightly, and with index finger, push section F inside and crease it.
Zechariah took out a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John.”
Right away, Zechariah was able to talk again. Why was Zechariah able to talk again? How do
you think his friends and family felt when they heard him speak after all that time? (Let
children respond.)
VBS 2017
PRESCHOOL TUESDAY LESSON 4 THE PROMISE 3
Unfold the figure.
The folds you just made will form a mouth that will open and close as you gently pull and
push on the side of the figure’s head.
Zechariah began to praise God. His friends and family were amazed.”
(from Snip and Tell Bible Stories, by Karen
Henley, Group Publishing, p 71-73)
Zechariah said some wonderful things when he was praising God. He said that John, his son,
would be called a prophet of the Most High God. He said that John would be the one who
would go ahead of the Lord Jesus to prepare the hearts of the people to believe in Jesus. This
meant that Jesus would be coming very soon!
When John grew up, he became a preacher and a prophet, just like his father Zechariah had
said! He helped the people get their hearts ready to believe what Jesus would tell them. One
day when He saw Jesus walking on the beach, John the Baptist told the people who were with
him, “Look! There is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world!”

on cardstock.
Say: I’ve just given messages to several kids who are pretending to be “Zachariah”. In a
moment you’ll hide your eyes and hold up one of your hands. The Zachariahs will tiptoe
around the room and put their message in someone’s hand. When we say, “One, two, three,
Which Zachariah came to me?” You will have one chance to guess who put the message in
your hand. If you are correct, you are the next Zachariah.
Play until all the children have the opportunity to be Zachariah.
Supplies: several half-sheets of cardstock with “His name is JOHN” printed on it.

VBS 2017 PRESCHOOL 5 WEDNESDAY JESUS’
BIRTH AND WHAT JESUS SAID ABOUT HIMSELF
SESSION – THE HIGHEST STAR!
Background Passages: Luke 1 & 2;
Prior to class:
Hi, Everyone, I’m glad you’re back at VBS again! Tonight we are going to talk about two very
special stars – one that was in the sky a long time ago, and the second one is a different kind
of star. Sometimes we call football or baseball players “stars, or actors that make movies
“Movie Stars”. Tonight we are going to talk about Jesus, the greatest Star to ever live!
READ JESUS’ BIRTH from BIBLE STORIES IN 5 MINUTES p.97-112
PUPPET: “Ms._______________, Ms.____________________, get me out of here!
LEADER: Booker, is that you? Where are you?
PUPPET: In here, in the Bible. (take puppet out)
Leader: How are you, today, Booker?
PUPPET: I’m fine. I heard you reading, and I wanted to see the children. Can I ask them some
questions?
LEADER: Certainly
PUPPET: Who was Elizabeth’s baby? (John)
What did Elizabeth’s baby do when he heard Mary’s voice? (Leaped for joy inside
Elizabeth’s
tummy!)
What did John do when he grew up? (became a preacher/prophet; told people about
Jesus; baptized Jesus)
Who came to see Jesus after he was born? (Shepherds, wise men)
How did the wise men know to look for baby Jesus? (they saw a star and followed it)
LEADER: This wasn’t just any star. This star was very special. It was a new star that the wise
men had never seen before. You see, the wise men were very, very smart, and they had
studied the stars. They knew this star was not like any other star. Also, this star moved to
show them which way to go, and it even stood still over the place where Jesus and his family
were staying! Regular stars don’t do that!
PUPPET: Wow, I didn’t know that, Ms. ________________. I think I want to go do some
studying about that star!

LEADER: Everyone, tell Booker bye. We’ll see you later, Booker! (Put puppet back in his book)
Babies don’t stay babies, do they? They become children, then they become teenagers, and
adults. Let’s look at something that happened when Jesus was a boy.
READ JESUS’ CHILDHOOD from BIBLE STORIES IN 5 MINUTES p.116-119
How old was Jesus in this story? (Twelve) Where did His parents find Him? (in the Temple
teaching about God) Jesus showed us that we can serve God even when we are children.
When Jesus grew up, He did lots of good things to help people. He also told people lots of
stories to help people know Him better. One of those stories is about a shepherd.
READ THE LOST SHEEP from THE BEGINNERS BIBLE p 131-136
In the Bible Jesus said that He is the Good Shepherd.
(POSTER) John 10:11 KJV - I am the good shepherd
In this story what are some things that the Good Shepherd does? (watches over his sheep,
gives them plenty of food and plenty of water, counts them to make sure they are all there,
looks for any that are lost, loves them)
God loves every one of His children like a shepherd loves His sheep. Jesus wants us to
remember that HE LOVES US!

3. Tape the eraser end of the pencil to the back of the star that has the picture of Jesus
on it. It should be taped so that the pencil extends past the lower part of Jesus’ body.
4. Put the two stars together so that points are matching and the pencil eraser is
sandwiched between the two stars. Tape or glue all edges.
5. Show children how to hold the pencil between the palms of your hands and roll it back
and forth very quickly. Watch the results.
TEACHING TIE-IN:
Jesus is the most important person to ever be born because He is God’s Son. He came to earth
to die for our sins because He loves us. This makes Jesus the greatest Star to ever be born! He
is a SUPERSTAR!

are following a star. My flashlight will be the star, and I will shine it on an object. . You will
cover your eyes until I tell you to open them. Then you will run and touch the object that the
light is shining on.
How to Play: Have all the children stand in a group and cover their eyes. While their eyes are
covered, shine the flashlight on an object in the room. Tell the children to uncover their eyes.
They must run to the object and touch it. Repeat the process while they are standing in that
location.

Background Passages:
Jesus Feeds 5000: Matthew 14, Mark 6, Luke 9, John 6
Jesus Calms A Storm and Walks On Water: Matthew 14, Mark 6, John 6
We have been talking about what Jesus said. Now let’s talk about some of the things He did.
Booker, do you want to help us learn about some things Jesus did?
PUPPET: (gets more excited as he talks) I sure do! Jesus did some really awesome things! Did
you know He made blind people see? Sometimes He touched their eyes, and sometimes He
didn’t touch them at all! And He made deaf people able to hear again! And He made lame
people walk! And He made sick people well! And…and….and….
LEADER: Sounds like you know a lot about what Jesus did! What do we call those times when
He did such special things?
PUPPET: Miracles! And those aren’t even all of His miracles! He even brought people back to
life! One time He brought a little girl back to life! And also a young man! And an older man
names Lazarus! Do you know Lazarus had been dead four whole days?!!! Jesus is so amazing!
Nobody can bring someone back to life! And that’s not all He did!!! He even walked on water
and stopped storms!!! And He fed thousands of people when all the food He had was just
enough for a little boy, like some of these boys here!
LEADER: I know! Why don’t we read about that to the kids!
PUPPET: I think that’s a great idea!
READ JESUS’ FEEDS 5,000 from BIBLE STORIES IN 5 MINUTES p.145-153 (stop after pg 153)
(SHOW THE BASKET WITH 5 ROLLS AND TWO SARDINES. (Be sure to keep extras nearby since
this may not be enough for everyone in your class to have some, but make it go as far as you
can before you get the extras. This will help to underscore how miraculous Jesus’ actions
were!)
PUPPET: Isn’t that amazing, Ms._______________? He fed lots and lots and lots of people with
no more food than that! AND, there were twelve BIG baskets left over! Not little baskets like
that one! I’m talking about really big baskets!
LEADER: Yes, Booker, it really is amazing, but that’s because Jesus is so amazing! Do you know
what He said?

(POSTER) John 6:35 NASB Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; he who comes to
Me shall not hunger,
LEADER: What do you think He meant when He said He is the Bread of Life?
PUPPET: I’m not sure, Ms ________________. Do you think the kids can help me out?
(Allow children to answer; be sure to point out that believing in Jesus gives us true spiritual
life, just like eating bread/food gives us physical life)
PUPPET: That’s pretty interesting, Ms _____________________. I’ve never thought about Jesus
being like bread. I like bread! I’ll think about that every time I eat bread!
LEADER: That’s a good idea, Booker. Maybe all of us can remember to think about Jesus when
we eat bread!
PUPPET: Do you remember that story about Jesus walking on water? Will you read that one to
us?
LEADER: Of course, Booker!
READ JESUS CALMS A STORM AND WALKS ON WATER from BIBLE STORIES IN 5 MINUTES p.

PUPPET: Wow! Isn’t that awesome? HE has power over all creation! That means He has power
over all the stars and planets, doesn’t it, Ms. ______________?
LEADER: Yes, Booker, that’s exactly what it means.
PUPPET: And the moon, and the sun, and the rain, and the snow, and tornadoes, and
hurricanes, and. . . and. . .and. . . that must mean He has power over everything!!!
LEADER: You’re right, Booker. Jesus has power over everything!
Boys and girls, why does He have power over everything? (Allow children to answer. Because
He is the Son of God. He was with God before the earth was created.)
Since He has power over everything, do you think He can take care of us? (Yes)
How did He take care of the people? (He fed 5,000)
How did He take care of the disciples? (Fed them too and kept them safe in the storm.)
Do you think we can trust Him to take care of us?

1. MAKE WAVE MACHINES
Prior to class: Collect empty water or soft drink bottles, remove the labels and thoroughly
clean the bottles. Fill each bottle half-full with vegetable oil.
Supplies: empty plastic water bottles, blue food coloring, vegetable oil, glue, glitter, kitchen
funnel, container of water, Styrofoam cups
Directions:
1. Give each child a prepared bottle. Help the child place the funnel over the opening of
the bottle and hold the bottle. Let the child use a cup to scoop water from the pot
and pour it in the bottle.
2. Show the children how to drop a pinch of glitter into the bottle.
3. Help children squeeze a few drops of blue food coloring into their bottle.
4. Place a drop of glue on the thread of each child’s bottle cap, and firmly secure the
cop on the bottle. (Encyclopedia of Bible Crafts for Preschoolers, Group Publishing, p. 147)
TEACHING TIE-IN:
Go over the story again and let the children shake their bottles during the storm and stop
shaking when Jesus calms the storm.
ASK:
How do you think Jesus’ friends felt when the storm obeyed God?
Why is it important to obey God?
What’s one way you can obey God this week?
Jesus is so powerful that even the wind and waves obey him. God wants us to obey His rules

one child on either end of the long strip and line the rest of the children up along either side
of the tablecloth. The child on one end is Jesus and the one on the other end is Peter. Tell the
remaining children that they are going to pretend to be the storm. They can wave their arms
for the waves of water and stomp their feet for thunder. However, they cannot touch Peter or
Jesus. Jesus will tell Peter to come. Peter will walk the length of the tablecloth during the
storm. Let children take turns being Peter and Jesus.

7. WHAT JESUS TAUGHT ABOUT KINGDOM LIVING – HOW TO BE A STAR IN GOD’S EYES
Background Passages: The Good Samaritan – Luke 10:30-37; The Prodigal Son – Luke 15:11-32
LEADER: Hi, Everyone! Welcome back to VBS! Hello, Booker!
PUPPET: Hi, Ms. _______________! I have a question.
LEADER: Of course! What’s your question?
PUPPET: Can I ask the kids?
LEADER: Maybe you better tell me what your question is first.
PUPPET: But then the kids will know what it is before I ask them.
LEADER: Just whisper it in my ear. (Puppet pretends to whisper in your ear) That’s a good
question! Why don’t you ask them right now?
PUPPET: Okay. Kids, do you ever look at the moon at night? (Pause for kids to answer)
PUPPET: The moon is very interesting! It can be different shapes, and it can be in different
parts of the sky!
LEADER: And there’s one other important thing about the moon – when you see it, it is always
shining!
PUPPET: (faces the Leader and asks) But, how does the moon shine? Do the kids know?
LEADER: Why don’t you ask them?
PUPPET: (turns to the kids) How does the moon shine? Where does the light come from? Does
it make its own light? (allow kids to answer)
LEADER: The moon cannot make light. The moon reflects the light from the sun. The sun
makes its own light because it is a big ball of fire! Let me show you what I am talking about.
HOLD UP A FLASHLIGHT AND TURN IT ON. PLACE THE INFLATED EARTH ON THE TABLE.
Let’s pretend this flashlight is the sun. Shine it on the earth. When one side of the earth is
turned toward the sun, it is daytime and everyone can see. But the people on the other side
of the earth are in the dark.
HOLD UP A HAND MIRROR AND SHINE FLASHLIGHT SO THAT THE LIGHT SHINES IN THE
MIRROR AND REFLECTS ON THE SIDE OF THE EARTH AWAY FROM THE FLASHLIGHT.
PRESCHOOL THURSDAY LESSON 7 WHAT JESUS TAUGHT ABOUT KINGDOM LIVING
VBS 2017

So God made the moon to reflect the light from the sun so there would be light at night to
see. Remember, electric lights have only been around a little more than a hundred years. In
all the years before that, the only way people could have light at night was to depend on the
moon, or use fire, such as a candle or a torch.
PUPPET: Wow, Ms. __________________! That’s pretty amazing! Isn’t it awesome that God
thought about what we needed and provided the moon to light up the night like that?!
LEADER: Oh, but there’s more, Booker! Just as the moon reflects the light from the sun,
Jesus, the Light of the world, wants us to reflect Him! How do we do that? By living like He
wants us to live! In order to know how He wants us to live, we need to know what He said in
the Bible, and we need to know what He is like!
PUPPET: Then we need to study the Bible! Tell us a story, Ms. _________________!
READ THE GOOD SAMARITAN from THE BEGINNER’S BIBLE p. 119-124
LEADER: Which of the three men, the priest, the temple helper and the Samaritan, was a
neighbor to the man who was injured by the robbers? (the Samaritan) (If the children cannot
answer the questions, let Booker answer)
Did he love the neighbor as himself? (Yes)
What do you think it means to love your neighbor as yourself? (Let the kids answer. Answers
should include phrases such as: it means to care about someone as much as you care about
yourself and to show it by the way you treat them.)
What did the Samaritan do to show it? (He took care of the man’s wounds, let him ride his
donkey while he walked, took care of him all night, even though he had places to go the next
day, spent his money on the man and arranged for him to have continued care)
BOOKER: That was a good story, Ms. _______________. I really liked the part where Jesus told
the man to go and do the same. When we help other people, we are being like Jesus. I guess
that means His light is shining through us, just like the moon helps us see the light of the sun
at night!
LEADER: Booker, you are so smart! That is exactly what it means! Are you ready for another
story?
BOOKER: I can’t wait!
READ THE PRODIGAL SON from BIBLE STORIES IN 5 MINUTES p.166-174
BOOKER: I like that story, MS. _______________! At first it was sad, but then it turned into a
happy story!
LEADER: That’s true, Booker. But let’s see why Jesus told this story.
How are kids your age like the son? (Everyone disobeys Jesus, even kids. When we sin, we
need to realize that we should ask Jesus for forgiveness.)
How is Jesus like the Father in the story? (He forgives us when we ask.)
PRESCHOOL THURSDAY LESSON 7 WHAT JESUS TAUGHT ABOUT KINGDOM LIVING

How do you feel when you do something wrong? (Guilty, bad about themselves, afraid of
getting into trouble)
Why do you think Jesus told this story? (There are times in our lives when we choose to do
what is wrong, or sin, just as this son did. We need God’s forgiveness. Jesus told this story
to help us understand His forgiveness. He wants us to know that just like the Father forgave
his son, Jesus forgives us when we ask.)
WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED ABOUT JESUS TODAY? (He has power over everything, even
sickness and death. He is our Good Samaritan, who gives us spiritual life, He is kind, patient,
loving and forgiving.)
What have we learned about how Jesus wants us to act? (He wants us to believe in Him, to
ask Him for forgiveness, to show kindness and love to others)

Practice the modes of traveling that you’ll call out:
-
Ride a donkey (walk on all fours) (when he left home)
-
Kneel in prayer (walk on knees) (at the hog pen)
-
Walk very tired (bent knees and slumped shoulders, drag feet) (on his way back home)
-

running to meet him)
-
Bow down to God (walk or run in a bowed-down position, with fingertips touching the
ground) (when he tells his father, “I’m sorry”)
After practicing, have kids run the relay as you randomly call out the modes of traveling.
Time how long the relay takes to complete. Then have kids run the relay several times, trying

VBS 2017 PRESCHOOL 8 THURSDAY JESUS DEATH
AND BURIAL SESSION
8. JESUS’ DEATH & BURIAL - THE STAR GOES OUT!
Background Passages: John 18 &19, Luke 22:39-23:56
Today we are going to talk about something very special that Jesus did just for us. It was a
day when the sky turned dark!
Many people loved Jesus but there were some wicked leaders who were jealous of Him
because so many people followed Jesus and listened to Him teach. They didn’t want Jesus to
live! So they came up with a plan to kill Jesus.
They paid Judas, one of Jesus’ disciples, thirty pieces of silver to lead them to Jesus at a time
when there wouldn’t be many people around.
Judas took the soldiers to the garden where he knew Jesus would be. He walked up to Jesus
and kissed him on the cheek! This was a sign for the soldiers to know which man was Jesus. It
is sad that Judas used a symbol of love to do something so bad to Jesus!
Read Jesus’ Death from BIBLE STORIES IN 5 MINUTES 180-186
While Jesus was on the cross, something very unusual happened. The earth got completely
dark for three hours. It was almost as if the sun had stopped shining. Of course, the sun didn’t
stop shining. God did something special to make the earth dark. I think God made the earth
dark because it made Him so sad to see Jesus hurting on the cross. After Jesus died and was
no longer hurting, the sun started shining again. The sun is actually a star. It is the brightest
star to us because it is so close to us.
Why did Jesus die? Because that was part of God’s Plan.
This week we have talked about God and what He is like. We have talked about how sin came
into the world. We said God has a plan to take care of sin. His plan was to send His Son to
take care of our sin. Jesus died to take our punishment for our sin.
The Old Testament promises that the Savior, God’s Son was coming; the New Testament tells
us about the Savior who came AND His plans for the future AND how He wants us to live!
The New Testament was written AFTER Jesus came to earth. It tells us why He came, what He
said, and what He did while He was here on the earth.
Many of the promises, or prophecies, in the Old Testament came true during the time that the
New Testament covers. Some of them are promises that will come true in the future.
The most important thing the New Testament tells us is how Jesus takes care of sin.
When people sin, they are supposed to be punished. God is always fair; He doesn’t play
favorites. Because He is fair, sin has to be punished. You and I have sinned.
PRESCHOOL THURSDAY LESSON 8 JESUS DEATH AND GOSPEL PRESENTATION
VBS 2017
2
HOLD UP A BLACK PIECE OF PAPER (Explain that black represents sin)
ASK: WHAT IS SIN? (Give children an opportunity to answer)
Sin is anything that God doesn’t like.
Can you tell me a way we can sin? (Give children an opportunity to give examples, such as
stealing, hitting someone, telling a lie, saying curse words, or calling someone names etc)
Who sins? What did God say?
(POSTER)Romans 3:23 The Bible says, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
That includes you and me. All of us have sinned.
When we sin, we are supposed to get punished. We don’t like it if someone hurts us and
they don’t get punished for it, do we? God is always fair. He doesn’t play favorites.
Because He is fair, sin has to be punished.
(POSTER) Romans 6:23 NASB “The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal
life in Christ Jesus our Lord”
Do you know what “wages”are?
Let me give you an example. Every day I go to work in the pharmacy. After I have worked
two weeks I get a paycheck. It is my pay for the work I have done. That check is my
“wages”. It is what I have earned. When we sin, what we earn, and deserve, is death.
DEATH is being separated from God forever.
But God loves us so much He doesn’t want us to be punished
(POSTER) "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever
believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:16 NASB
That’s why He came up with a plan. He loves us so much He wants us to be with Him in
heaven. So He made a plan to send Jesus to take our punishment for us. That’s what He
did when He died on the cross.
HOLD UP A RED PIECE OF PAPER (Explain that red represents Jesus blood that He gave for us
when He took our punishment)
That’s why He sent Jesus to earth. Jesus took our punishment for us when He suffered
and died on the cross.
God showed us His love by sending His own son to die on a cross for us!
Let’s go back to Romans 6:23. Look at the last part of that verse. God offers us a gift. That
gift is eternal life. Do you know what eternal life is? (Give children an opportunity to
answer: getting to be with Jesus forever.)
(Put a SMALL WRAPPED GIFT on the palm of your hand)
PRESCHOOL THURSDAY LESSON 8 JESUS DEATH AND GOSPEL PRESENTATION
VBS 2017
3
God offers the gift to everyone, and Jesus died for everyone, but that doesn’t mean that
everyone just automatically goes to heaven. We have to ask Him for it. Let me show you.
If I said, this gift is for you, and you said, “Okay”, but you go home and never come get it,
is it your gift? (Let the children answer.)
No. It’s still my gift. I offered it, but you did not accept it. Jesus offers us the chance to
be with Him forever, but we have to accept it. We do that by praying and asking Him to
forgive us. Do you know what God has promised us?
God promises to forgive us and save us (point to “you shall be saved”) if we really believe
that Jesus is God. You see, He proved He is God when He came back to life. (point to
“believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead”) That’s what it means when it
says “God raised Him from the dead”. To “confess” something means to agree with God
about it.
Do you remember what “Lord” means? (Give children the opportunity to answer)
It means that He is the Master, the One in control, the Boss.
That part of the verse means we have decided to let Him be in control of our life. He has
promised that if we will believe Jesus is really God and give Him control of our lives, He
will save us!
HOLD UP A WHITE SHEET OF PAPER (Explain that white stands for a pure heart because
Jesus has taken away all the dark sin)
When we ask Jesus to save us and we really, really mean it with all our hearts, He forgives
our sins.
(POSTER) 1 John 1:9 NASB “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our
sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
God is faithful; He always does what He says He is going to do. He said He will forgive us if
we ask Him, and He is going to do it!
HOLD UP A GREEN PIECE OF PAPER (Explain that green represents growing to be more like
Jesus and to please Him)
After we ask Him to forgive us for our sins, God wants us to get to know Him better. We
call this “Growing”. That is what the green paper stands for. We grow by:
-listening to Him. We do this when we read the Bible, listen to the pastor or
teacher at church.
-talking to Him. We do this when we pray.
-making friends with His friends. We do this when we go to church.
-telling others about Him.
PRESCHOOL THURSDAY LESSON 8 JESUS DEATH AND GOSPEL PRESENTATION
VBS 2017
4
-obeying Him.
HOLD UP A YELLOW PIECE OF PAPER (Explain that yellow represents heaven and always
being with Jesus)
Here is the beautiful thing about asking Him to forgive us: Not only does He save us from
Satan’s home, and promise to take us to heaven one day, He puts His Holy Spirit in our
hearts to be with us forever! He will never leave us! Look at His promise:
(POSTER) Hebrews 13:5 ESV God has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you."
If you want to ask Jesus to be your Savior please come talk to me or to one of the adults.
PRAY AND THANK GOD FOR SENDING JESUS TO DIE FOR US
REINFORCEMENT ACTIVITIES:
MAKE SALVATION HANDS
Supplies: Cardstock, Pencil to trace hand, jewels, stickers or pieces of paper in the following
colors: black, red, white, green and yellow, glue or glitter glue (optional)
Explain that they are going to put a ring on every finger.
Trace the child’s hand on cardstock. Allow child to glue a “jewel” to each finger in the
following order:
Thumb: Black; Forefinger: Red; Middle Finger: White; Ring Finger: Green; Pinkie: Yellow
Discuss what each color means.
PLAY A GAME
REMEMBERING JESUS
Prior to class: Make two copies of the game cards on cardstock for every child or for every
group of two or three children. Cut cards apart. Place each set of game cards in a small
Ziplock bag.
This is a matching game for individual children or for groups of two or three. Explain that this
game will help us to remember Jesus and what He did for us. As they play, go over the colors
and what they stand for. Point out how the star, the cross, the Bible and the dove (Jesus’
baptism by John the Baptist) all relate to Jesus.
Supplies: copies of game cards, scissors, small ziplock bags
NOTE TO TEACHERS:
Young children who attend church regularly and are taught at home can understand the
Gospel and be saved if they have received adequate training concerning the gospel. Most of
the children you will teach during VBS have not had that kind of training. Consequently, it will

be better to do one on one counseling with these younger children rather than a group

sinned. A CHILD WHO CANNOT TELL YOU ABOUT HIS SIN DOES NOT UNDERSTAND AND IS NOT
READY FOR SALVATION.
I have included the material below as a guide to help you if you have the opportunity to
counsel a child.
Have you ever asked Jesus to be your Savior?
Can you tell me of a time when you sinned?
Would you like to pray right now and ask Him?
You can pray this prayer if you want. It is your decision, No one is going to make you pray.
I’m going to show you how to pray, then you can pray silently in your hearts. When you pray
this, you have to really, really mean it with all your heart. God knows if you are being
serious or not. He will hear you if you really, really mean it. This is what you say:
(Pause after every sentence to give the child time to repeat it silently.)
Dear Father, I know I have sinned. (pause) I know that my sin hurt your Son, Jesus, because
He took my punishment for my sin. (pause) I know that Jesus really is God. (pause) He
proved it when He came back to life. (pause) Please forgive Me. (pause) I want my whole
life to be yours from now on. (pause)

TO LIFE SESSION
9. JESUS CAME BACK TO LIFE! – THE BRIGHT MORNING STAR SHINES AGAIN!
Background Passages: Luke 24, John 20 & 21, Acts 1:1-11
Hi, everyone! Yesterday, we read how Jesus was arrested, and we talked about Jesus dying on
the cross. But His story doesn’t end there!
(PHOTO OF GARDEN TOMB)
ASK: Yesterday when we talked about Jesus, were we studying the OT or the NT? (The New
Testament!)
Let’s see what happens next!
READ: Jesus Is Risen! The Beginners Bible NT P 193-198
When Jesus was living, He told His disciples that He would be put to death and would be
raised up from the dead on the third day.
And that is exactly what happened!
Only God can tell what is going to happen before it happens.
At last the disciples began to believe, and to remember that Jesus had said to them that He
would live again, and that they would soon see Him. They had not realized that He was
stronger than death. Now they knew He was! He had brought Himself back to life!
THIS IS HOW JESUS PROVED HE IS GOD! NO ONE ELSE HAS THE ABILITY TO BRING
THEMSELVES BACK TO LIFE! ONLY JESUS CAN DO THAT!
READ: Jesus Goes To Heaven! The Beginners Bible NT P 206-211
The angels said, “This Jesus, who has gone into Heaven, will come back again, in the same
way that you saw Him go.”
POSTER Acts 1:11 NASB “they also said, This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into
heaven, will come in just the same way.”
Isn’t this an awesome promise? When He comes back again, everyone who has ask Jesus
to forgive them and to be in control of their lives will get to go to Heaven and live with
Him! That’s an amazing and wonderful promise!
LET’S PRAY AND THANK GOD THAT JESUS CAME BACK TO LIFE AND THAT HE IS COMING
BACK ONE DAY.

PLAY A GAME:
THE BEAR IN HEAVEN
Spread the blanket on the ground, and have kids stand around it. Have them slightly roll up
the blanket’s edges and get a good grip on it. Place the teddy bear in the center of the
blanket, and announce that kids will try to toss the bear high enough to go to heaven.
After having the whole group yell, “One, two, three – go to heaven!” have everyone pull back
on the blanket at the same time to toss the teddy bear in the air. Encourage kids to repeat
this several times, trying to achieve higher and higher tosses.

Discuss: At the end of the game, have kids lay the blanket on the floor and sit around it. Then discuss
the following questions:
What do thou think heaven is like?
How do we get to heaven?
Read John 3:16 then say: Even though we tried and tried, we couldn’t get the bear to go to
heaven: We get to heaven one way – through Jesus. Because we believe Jesus took our sins
with Him to the cross, then rose from the dead, we’ll live with Him forever in heaven. (The

VBS 2017 PRESCHOOL 10 FRIDAY JESUS IS COMING
TO TAKE US TO HEAVEN SESSION
10. JESUS IS COMING TO TAKE US TO HEAVEN! - HOME OF THE STARS!
Background Passages: John 14:1-6, Revelation 21 & 22
Prior to class: Prepare jar of jewels
(POSTER) Rev 22:16 “I am the Bright Morning Star.”
In Revelation 22:16, Jesus said, “I am the Bright Morning Star.” What do you think He meant
by that?
Let’s take a look at the Morning Star and see what clues it gives us. The morning star is the
brightest and most beautiful of all stars. The morning star appears very early in the morning
and is the brightest star in the sky right before dawn. When people saw the morning star
shining brightly, they knew it would not be long until the sun appeared! The morning star is
majestic and beautiful!
When Jesus said He is the Bright Morning Star, He is reminding us that one day He will come to
earth again to take us to be with Him in Heaven.
Heaven is a very beautiful place.
When Jesus was still on earth with His disciples, He told them that He was going to heaven to
fix a place for us. Then He said He was going to come back and get the people who have
asked Him to be their Savior and Lord, and take them to live with Him in heaven. He is going
to take them to heaven to live with Him.
POSTER John 14:3 NCV: After I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take
you to be with me.
Heaven is where God’s throne is, and it is where Jesus is now.
Heaven is the very last part of God’s Plan for man. We can read about it in the very last part
of the Bible, the book of Revelation. Do you think Revelation is in the OT or the NT?
That’s right! It’s in the New Testament!
Let’s read about it.
READ: THE BEGINNERS BIBLE NEW TESTAMENT p 244-248
PUPPET: Ms._______________! Ms._______________! Help me out of here!
TEACHER: Hi Booker! I’m glad you could join us today!
PRESCHOOL FRIDAY LESSON 10 HEAVEN

VBS 2017
PUPPET: I heard you talking about heaven! I read all about heaven in the book of Revelation!
It’s beautiful! And big! And awesome! And georgeous! And wonderful! And….And….And I can’t
wait to go there!!!
TEACHER: Do you want to tell us about it?
PUPPET: You bet! The most awesome thing about it is that’s where God and Jesus are! And you
know what Jesus is doing right now?
TEACHER: What is Jesus doing?
PUPPET: Praying for us! That’s what the Bible says!
TEACHER: That’s right, Booker.
PUPPET: God and Jesus are both sitting on their thrones. The Bible says there won’t be any
night there. It also says Heaven doesn’t need a sun or a moon.
TEACHER: The reason there’s no need for a sun or moon is because God’s glory lights it.
PUPPET: There is No temple in heaven either.
TEACHER: God the Father and Jesus ARE the temple!
PUPPET: And there’s a river there! The water comes out from under God’s throne and the
river flows in the middle of the street. Did you know there’s going to be a tree there that
makes twelve different kinds of fruits? Isn’t that incredible?
TEACHER: It certainly is, Booker. Our trees here just make one kind of fruit. An apple tree
makes apples and an orange tree makes oranges. You can’t pick a lemon off an apple tree.
What else do you know about heaven?
PUPPET: The city is square. Each side is 1500 miles long and it is 1500 miles high. That’s really
big! AND. . . . it’s made of pure gold! Can you believe it! And there are walls around it! The
walls of the city is made of stuff that looks like diamonds! And the ground under the city is
actually HUGE Rocks that are all different colors! Red and blue and green and yellow and
purple and some other colors too! I’ve seen some rocks like that in the rings that some ladies
wear.
TEACHER: Do they look like these? (Hold up a jar of fake gemstones for children to see.)
PUPPET: Yes, those are the right colors! But the ones in heaven are going to be very, very,
very big!
TEACHER: You said there were walls around Heaven. Are there any gates?
PUPPET: There certainly are! There are 12 gates in the walls, with an angel by each gate. And
each gate is made from one pearl! The gates are never closed.
TEACHER: Why do you think they won’t be closed?
PUPPET: Cause God won’t have any enemies any more. The devil won’t be around any more

TEACHER: That’s right! Are there any streets in heaven?
PUPPET: Yes, and they are made of pure gold!
TEACHER: What does the Bible say about the angels?
PUPPET: There are different kinds of angels in heaven. Some of the angels are always
worshipping God, day and night. They never stop!
TEACHER: What else can you tell us about heaven?
PUPPET: There are no tears and no crying in heaven. There is no death and no mourning in
heaven. There is no pain in heaven. We will get to meet people from a long time ago, like
John the Baptist and Zechariah.
TEACHER: Do you know the best part? We will live there forever and ever! Isn’t God awesome
to come up with such a wonderful plan for people?
LET’S PRAY AND THANK HIM FOR HIS PLAN
GAME: Heaven is a really awesome place! Why don’t we play a game about heaven? It’s
called “The Bible Says. . . .”
I’m going to name something. If you think it IS in heaven, hold both THUMBS UP. If you think
it is NOT in heaven, hold both THUMBS DOWN. We will let Booker tell us which answer is right.
