CLOSING OUT
This issue completes the thirty-ninth volume of this journal and we are beginning to look
forward to celebrating our fortieth year of publication next year. Our hope for the past is that
we have at least occasionally brought readers something useful or informative in the
genealogical scene, and our hope for the future is that we can do even better. To all our
readers, best wishes for a happy and blessed holiday season and high promise for the new
year.
AGS COMPLETES THE MILLENIUM: 1999-2000 AGS BOARD ELECTED
As provided in the by-laws, ten members of AGS were elected to the 1999-2000 seats on the
Board of Directors at the October 1998 meeting, to serve along with the ten board members
holding office in the 1998-1999 biennium. The slate includes Kelly McCracken Barnhill,
Lorrie Foster Henderson, Bill Koehler, John C. Miller, Putnam W. Monroe, Clarice Neal and
Lillian Ramirez, all of whom are are carryover members, plus Jim Brinkman, Dana Dupuis
and Suzanne Robertson as newly elected members. The Editor joins other Board Members in
welcoming those newly elected. There is much to do and your talents, enthusiasms and new
perspectives will be highly appreciated.
At this point we’d like to express a world of appreciation to Board Members Lois Henegar,
Roberta Jenkins and Bill Nash, each of whom chose not to stand for reelection. You have
contributed so much for the good of the Society over the past several years and you assuredly
will be missed. We take a bit of comfort in knowing that your counsel and assistance will
always be available as Society members. Thanks to each of you, and may your days ahead be
filled with genealogical good luck at every turn of the page.

MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL BS DUE SOON
Sometime in December you should be receiving a dues renewal flyer concerning your 1999 dues.
This flyer replaces the AGS Newsletter for the month, giving our peerless and never-thanked-enough
Newsletter Editor Wilena Young a small Xmas break. And also, we have no December meeting
since it would be right in the middle of the holiday season.
As for the flyer, don’t set it aside. We’d like to get members signed up as early in the year as
possible. It helps our treasury, yes, but it benefits you too in that you will be assured of an unbroken
reception of Newsletters and Quarterlies, and also getting your name in the Membership Handbook
which is issued in the early spring. Thanks for your promptness.
GEARING UP FOR THE AUGUST I999 SEMINAR
Seminar Chairs Jean Shroyer and Marilyn Henley are flying high and fast with next year’s Seminar
set for Saturday, 21 August 1999, prospectively at the Highland Park Baptist Church, 5206 Balcones
(our monthly meeting and 1998 Seminar site). We are very delighted to have engaged Myra
Vanderpool Ghormley, CG, as our speaker. We all know Myra as the online Genealogy Editor for
Prodigy Services; she also has a syndicated genealogy column through the Los Angeles Times
Syndicate and has authored several books and over a thousand articles. We doubt there is anyone in
the country with better credentials than she has in the field and it was only because we contacted her
early that we were able to have her come.
In this context, you will note that we are returning to a late Summer time frame for the occasion. We
were finding the spring seasonjust overloaded with events genealogical and otherwise sojust finding
a suitable Saturday was difficult. And we wouldn’t have been able to schedule Ms. Ghormley.
Mark your calendars.
THE QUARTERLY’S FEATURE-THE TEXAN
Starting on Page 176 we are pleased to present THE TEXAN, a short bio of Charles Walker, one of
Austin’s pioneers, which was sent to us by descendant Robert R. Stevens, Director of the Lewis
Historical Collections at Vincennes University. The article is timely, interesting and informative and
is an enhancement to the genealogy of this area. We thank Mr. Stevens for his thoughtfulness and
courtesy and commend the paper to you.
One Liners:
If idiots could fly, this would be an airport.
I drive way too fast to worry about cholesterol.
Don’t insult the alligator till after you’ve crossed the river.
Don’t worry; the answer’s always at the back of the book.

The information below was sent to Barbara Coudreau by Susan Kelley and given to the Quarterly with the 1850

“July 1-
Maj. Kamprnann, for driving over the Commerce Street bridge faster than a walk, was
discharged, on the plea that his horse was a new one, and unmanageable.”
Anyone sporting a new set of wheels want to try this excuse on an Austin municipal judge?-Ed.

We are pleased aid privileged that Director Stevens sent the Quarterly his paper, The Texan, and has agreed to let us print
it. The article is most timely; in this year’s March Quarterly we wrote about the Cumberland Gap and the wave of immigrants from
the East. Although he came down the Ohio, Charles Walker surely was part of that wave. We have just finished the Goudreau
compilatiodannotation of the 1850 Travis County Census; whom do we find listed as Family #132 on that Census but the same
Charles Walker. We hope our readers enjoy Mr. Stevens’ quite interesting portrayal of atruly pioneer family; we indeed, along with
Whitman,
hear America singing.

PREFACE
(To the second edition)
In April 1996, while vacationing at the beautiful River Walk in San Antonio, Texas, I
made three trips to the Texas capital of Austin 83 miles away. There I continued my
research into the lives of Charles and Harriet Walker.
I am indebted to my fiiend Starlene Johnson in the search for more Walker information.
Her expertise in the tools of historical research are considerable and she was a great help.
The Christmas 1995 article is accurate as far as it goes, but enough new information was
discovered in Austin to warrant this second edition.

1 Hear America Singing
by Walt Whitman
I HEAR America singing, the varied carols I hear,
Those of mechanics, each one singing his as it should be blithe and strong,
The carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam,
The mason singing his as he makes ready for work, or leaves off work,
The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat, the deck-hand singing on the
steamboat deck,
The shoemaker singing as he sits on his bench, the hatter singing as he stands,
The wood-cutter’s song, the ploughboy’s on his way in the morning, or at noon
intermission or at sundown,
The delicious singing of the mother, or the young wife at work, or of the girl sewing or
washing,
Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else,
The day what belongs to the day - at night the party of young fellows, robust friendly,
Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs.
During the first decade of the 19thcentury a young nation was on the move. Thousands of settlers
poured through the Cumberland Gap, rafted down the Ohio River and followed the animal tracks and
crude roads into Kentucky and eventually into the Indiana Territory. There was cheap and fertile land to
be had for the settling and a chance for a new independence. It was a time made for adventurers,
roughnecks and those strong souls who nourished a bold and courageous spirit. It was the making of the
American dream.
Charles Walker exemplified this sturdy pioneer. He was born, probably in southwestern
Pennsylvania, on August 8, 1787. The same year of that famous Magna Carta of American expansion, the
Northwest Ordinance of 1787.
Of his early life little is known, but one can speculate that at an early age he developed those
pioneer instincts of survival in a land still largely forested, where marksmanship kept food on the table
and a robust body helped ease the constant battle with the elements. At this writing, the name of his father
is unknown but a strong family tradition persists that his mother was one Martha Duval, of the Duval
family that eventually settled in large numbers in and around Bardstown, Kentucky. In fact Walkers and
Duvals historically intermarried and genealogists have been attempting to unravel the complicated
relationship of these two families for many years.
Sometime in his early youth Charles Walker migrated to Nelson County, Kentucky, and settled
near Bardstown. His trip to the wilds of Kentucky in all probability first took him to Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, where he rafted down the Ohio River to the Falls of the Ohio at Louisville and walked the
thirty miles to Nelson County. By 1817 his name begins to appear oncounty tax registers and land titles.
In Nelson County he met a girl named Harriet Wright, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Mumford

Wright. She had migrated to Kentucky from Maryland sometime around the turn of the century. Maryland
records show that the parents had married in Frederick County, on October 26, 1789 and their daughter
Harriet was born in July 1795. Charles and Harriet were married in Nelson County on November 24, 1818
by Rev. Isaac Taylor. Permission to marry was given by the bride’s father, Joseph Wright, and witnesses
were William Niell and James M. Wright. Several children were born to the couple while still living in
Kentucky and future children would be born in Indiana and Texas.
In the Summer of 1824 wanderlust took hold of Charles Walker as he placed his wife and at least
three small children in a wagon and set out to cross the Ohio River into Indiana. There was plenty of land
available in what was beginning to be known as the Hoosier State. The road to a new home in Indiana
took the Walkers over the old Buffalo Trace, by then a passageway suitable for wagon traffic, to
Vincennes on the Wabash River in Knox County. The Walkers chose Greene County as their stopping
place and eventually settled in the Scaffold Prairie area, just west of the present day town of Worthington.
Scaffold Prairie was so named from the fact that only a decade or two earlier Indians had built 12 to 15
foot scaffolds on poles near local salt licks as hunting platforms. Some of the scaffolds were still in place
when the Walker family arrived.
Greene County had been formed three years earlier from land originally a part of Daviess and
Sullivan Counties, which in 1817 had both been carved out of Knox County. It was to be the home of the
Walkers for the next 15 years. These were busy years for the small family with the birth of additional
children and the hard work of building a small, primitive farm out of an unplowed tract of wilderness. In
addition to making the farm, Walker built a substantial house, set out a sizable apple orchard, and found
time to serve his community as a Justice of the Peace. In addition, there is some evidence that he earned
extra income working as a carpenter. The known children of Charles and Harriet Walker living during the
Indiana years were all daughters. They were Susan M. (b ca. 1821 in Ky.), Mary Jane (b Sept. 22, 1822 in
Ky.), Elizabeth Sweet (b June 24,1824 in Ky.) and Amanda (b ca. 1828 in MD.).
By early 1839 Charles Walker was ready to move again and this would very well prove to be an
adventure to try men’s souls. The goal was the newly formed Republic of Texas and it ranged many miles
to the Southwest with many rivers, streams and forests in the way.
In mid April 1839 the family packed their belongings and set out for Terre Haute on the Wabash
River. It must have been a particularly difficult time for the Walker’s 16 year old daughter. Mary Jane.
She was in love with 23 year old Daniel Gregg Dixon and now she was leaving. Soon after the family
departed Daniel found an ache in his heart and set out to catch the Walkers before they departed down the
Wabash. He caught the caravan near the Vigo County line just east of Terre Haute and immediately asked
for Mary Jane’s hand in marriage. She accepted and her family approved. The marriage was performed on
April 17, 1839 in Terre Haute. On the very same day the Walkers started down the Wabash leaving
behind their home in Indiana and their daughter Mary Jane.
The path to Texas would take them down the Wabash to the Ohio River and finally down the
Mississippi River to New Orleans, Louisiana. The generally used mode of transportation of the period
would have probably been a larger boat by way of the Gulf of Mexico to one of the bustling Texas port
cities, such as Galveston.
There is some evidence that other Greene County families made the journey, including the Wilks
family which later intermarried with the Walkers. When the migrating party finally arrived in Texas, they
had in fact left the United States and entered a new country.
Charles Walker was probably lured to Texas by colonizers or land agents, commonly called
impresarios. Their advertisements appeared in numerous northern newspapers of the United States. The
main thrust of Texas government was to entice as many Americans as possible to colonize this large land
mass. Only three years before, on April 21, 1836, Sam Houston and his Texas army had won the Battle of
San Jacinto establishing independence from Mexico. Within a short time the new Republic received
recognition from the United States, Great Britain, France and several other countries, though Mexico had
never relinquished its claim. Texas independence was beset by financial difficulties, the constant threat of
Page 179
invasion by Mexico, and continuing resistance by the Indians. What it needed was settlements of
businessmen, ranchers and farmers.
In July of 1839 the Walkers arrived at the point where the Colorado River (of Texas) crosses the
Balcones Escarpment in the south-central part of the new Republic. At this location was the small village
of Waterloo, but that very summer a group of government scouts had selected the site as the permanent
capital of the Republic and renamed it Austin, in honor of Stephen F. Austin, acknowledged father of the
Republic. In 1840 a new county was formed out of Bastrop County and named Travis in honor of William
B. Travis, commander of Texas troops at the ill-fated battle and defeat at the Alamo.
As an added incentive for immigration the Republic of Texas had passed laws allowing women to
qualify as property owners. It was a unique and unusual situation for the times and would permit a
husband and wife to qualify for twice the usual 320 acre homesteads. On July 11, 1839 Charles Walker
and his wife were issued a certificate of homestead for 640 acres of property in Bastrop (soon to be
Travis) County. The only stipulation for full title was that the land had to be improved and a residence
established on it within five years.
The Walkers began life in Travis County amid a thunderous period of Texas history, and much of
the excitement would center around the capital city of Austin. The new settlers, and especially their
President Sam Houston, mostly favored eventual annexation by the United States. With the election of
James K. Polk, a strong and resourceful U.S. President, annexation became a strong possibility and, on
December 29,1845, Texas became the 28th state of the federal union. This action was one of the principal
pretexts for the Mexican War, because of accumulated boundary disputes. Following the victory of the
United States over Mexico the two countries signed the Treaty of Guadeloupe-Hidalgo in 1848. Under
this agreement Mexico abandoned its claims to Texas and ceded the territories of New Mexico and
California to the United States.
In July 1844 an unconditional certificate of ownership (Deed) was issued to the Walkers, and
during the next decade they would complete their family with a total of 11 known children.
One source states that the couple had 15 children, but census records and other family traditions
cannot account for that number.
Tragedy befell the family in August of 1852 when Harriet Wright Walker, wife and mother, died
at age 57. Her life could not have been easy - this was the lot of most pioneer women and mothers of her
era. Her odyssey of life had taken her from her birthplace in Maryland to Kentucky and on to the prairie
of Greene County. Indiana. Her last 14 years were spent on the raw frontier of Texas. She had borne
between 11 and 15 children. She was truly a remarkable woman.
With Harriet Walker’s death an interesting insight into the historical record of the family
developed. Because of the rights of women to hold communal property with their husbands, an estate for
Harriet was created and an inventory of the property and other effects jointly held is recorded. It is as
follows:
No. 265 Estate of Harriet Walker, deceased.

The Civil War was a particularly trying period for Charles Walker. There was much division among
Texans over secession from the United States. Governor Sam Houston, an avowed loyalist, immediately
began a campaign to stay the course on behalf of Union. His efforts were met with opposition in the
Texas assembly, which was determined to secede. A plebiscite was authorized and by a vote of 46,153 to
14,747 Texas left the Union.
Charles Walker was opposed to separation and in January 1861 signed a petition protesting the taking
of Texas out of the IJnion. Once the die was cast, however, two of his sons immediately joined the
Confederate Army. James M. Walker enlisted with Company G, 6th Texas Infantry, as a private under the
command of Captain Rhoads Fisher. Company G was known as the Travis Rifles. It would have seemed
logical that his brother, Charles W. Walker, would have also been a member of Company G, but his name
does not appear on the roster of that unit. Speculation is that he was a member of another Company within
the regiment. In the spring of 1862, the 6th Infantry was ordered to Arkansas and stationed at an Arkansas
Confederate military post. In January 1863, the entire command was captured (including Company “G”)
by a largely superior force under Union General John McClernard, who had ascended the Arkansas River
with 128 transports loaded with troops and accompanied by eleven gun boats. The captured officers were
sent to Camp Chase, Ohio and the enlisted men to Camp Douglas, Illinois where they were later
exchanged and were soon back fighting Yankees. For some unknown reason, however, James M. Walker
found himself in the Federal stockade in Indianapolis, Indiana where his brother-in-law, Daniel G. Dixon,
secured his parole and took him home to the town of Dixon in Greene County, Indiana. Following a
convalescent period, the young man became what was commonly termed “reconstructed.” He made his
way to Sullivan, Indiana where, on March 6, 1864, he enlisted in the 3 1st Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He
was at that point a true ConfederateNankee. At the time of enlistment he was described as 5 ’8’: dark
complected, with hazel eyes, and gave his address as that of his sister and brother-in-law, in Fairplay
Township, Greene Co., Indiana with no mention of his service as a Confederate soldier. He was assigned
to duty in Vicksburg, Mississippi, where he became ill. Following a short stay in the McPherson US
Army Hospital in Vicksburg, he was furloughed back to the home of his sister and brother-in-law in
Indiana.. Fully recovered by early summer of 1865, and with the war over, James was ordered to report to
his regiment now stationed in Kentucky. On his way to rejoin his unit, he became ill and died somewhere
in Kentucky on July 3 1, 1865. His body was shipped to Indianapolis, and carried by wagon to Greene
County by Daniel Dixon. Today James M.Walker lies buried beside his sister, Mary Jane, in the Dixon
Cemeteryjust south of Worthington.

Library, Austin, Texas.

Following the Civil War the Texas family of Charles Walker continued to prosper, and by the turn of
the new century, his descendants in turn would spread to the Pacific Ocean, leaving a zigzag migratory
trail2. The 1870 census for Travis Co., Texas lists him as a retired carpenter, born in Pennsylvania and
living in Jollyville, today a suburb of Austin, with his daughter, Elizabeth Walker Thorp, a widow.
Charles Walker died at Jollyville, in November 1878 at the age of 91,and today lies buried beside his
wife Harriet in Section 1 of Oakwood Cemetery, Austin, in the shadow of the University of Texas. During
his life he had seen much. From the pioneers migrating into the wildernesses of Kentucky and Indiana to
the birth of a new nation called Texas, Charles Walker was there. He truly personifies the pioneer spirit of
America and was probably most proud of being a Texan.
He was the great, great, great, great grandfather of Bob, Jim, Rick and Dave Stevens.

1NFORMATION ABOUT T H E INDEXING P R O G R A M
USED BY THE AGS QUARTERLY
Any reader about to or in the process of publishing a genealogical or family book will probably
have to decide how to index it, and books of this kind, usually filled with names, are almost useless without
at least a name index. We’d like to pass along to these readers information concerning the indexing program
used by the Quarterly; the following index pages were prepared using this program. Our Mail Officer,
Putnam Monroe, mentioned having seen an early version at a national convention some years back, and we
in turn would like to let others know of an excellent genealogical information manager.
The program is Sky Index, available from SKY Software, 4675 York Rd #1, Lineboro MD 21 102,
phone 1-800-776-0137, internet page httu://www.skv-software.com. It is available in Standard and
Professional editions. We were privileged to participate in the early beta testing of this Windows 3.1/98/NT
gem and know it is a strong, solid, user-friendly tool with lots of features. It automatically sorts and
alphabetizes as each name is entered. The program can also easily add a wife’s maiden name to the index
as her married name is entered, a very handy feature for genealogists. Another feature we like is that once
data entry is completed the program will format to and output the completely formatted index to your word
processor of choice (Word, WP,you name it). Once you have the file in your word processor you can firther
massage it using all of your processor features-you are no longer married to Sky Index. There are many more
features which make it much more powerful than the indexing features of most word processors, and even
other stand-alone programs. We hope you agree that it outputs a very neat, readable and attractive index.
