Breaking Barriers: Jackie Robinson Be
an All-Star Reading Program
Jackie Robinson is one of the most influential baseball players
in history. As the first African-American to play in Major League
Baseball, he broke the color barrier and opened the door for more
players of different races to play. Each year on April 15, MLB
celebrates the anniversary of Jackie’s historic entry into baseball with
every team playing in his honor and every player wearing the number 42 on their jerseys. Jackie’s impact, however,
goes beyond baseball. To honor his contributions, the Minnesota Twins created the Be an All-Star reading
program last year. Volunteers from the Twins front office staff visit 4th and 5th graders at select schools to share
Robinson’s story by reading a book about him written by his daughter Sharon Robinson and talking about his nine
values: courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment and excellence.
This program not only highlights Robinson’s historic and successful baseball career and impact on the civil rights
movement and society today, but the importance of reading, staying focused and determined in school. This year,
we visited 16 schools and reached more than 2,000 students. We also encouraged participating schools to submit
entries to the MLB Breaking Barriers Essay contest in which students in grades 4-9 share their personal stories
and how they use Robinson’s nine values to face their own barriers. Local winners from participating schools will
be honored at the pre-game ceremony on Jackie Robinson Day at Target Field Wednesday, April 15. For ticket
information, check here.
The Minnesota Twins and Phyllis Wheatley Community
Center host Outstanding Student Achievement Awards
On Wednesday, March 18 the Minnesota Twins and the Phyllis Wheatley Community Center
honored 12 students for their outstanding achievements. Students across all ages were
acknowledged for their achievements in entrepreneurship and leadership, transitioning
well into kindergarten, improving school attendance, and academic improvement. Awards
were presented by staff members who knew each student personally and all believed the
recipient was worthy of the honor. Special guests in attendance included Superintendent of
Minneapolis Public Schools Michael Gar, Linda Ritchie from Hennepin County Attorney’s
Office and Terry Egge from the Pohlad Foundation.

Farnsworth Aerospace PreK-8 Magnet
School History Day
Farnsworth Aerospace PreK-8 Magnet School hosted a History
Day Fair. Farnsworth’s 6-8th grade students participated in this
national education program that annually engages more than
half a million students around the world in conducting original
research on history topics, with the opportunity to advance to
regional, state and national competition. This year’s topic was
Leadership & Legacy in History, allowing students to research
topics from all levels of history. Farnsworth was very fortunate to have many community members be History Day
judges including volunteers from the Minnesota Twins. Many projects advanced to the Regional History Fair on
Saturday, March 14. Projects included exhibit boards, presentations, websites, documentaries and papers.
