General Information Journal of Biophotonics is published in an onlineonly format. Print subscription and single issue sales are available from Wiley’s Print-on-Demand Partner. To order online click through to the ordering portal from the journal’s subscribe and renew page on www.biophotonics-journal.org. Only papers not yet published and not submitted for publication elsewhere will be accepted. Language of publication is English. 2. Manuscript Types Review Articles will usually be written at the invitation of the Editors. Unsolicited reviews will be highly welcome but authors wishing to submit a review are requested to consult the Editors prior to commencement. The size of a Review may differ, a length of about 45,000 characters (with spaces) or 7,000 words incl. references, excl. figures is recommended. Journal of Biophotonics – Instructions to Authors (April 2017) Full Articles are the journal's most common type of publication. A length of about 25,000 characters (with spaces) or 4,000 words incl. references, excl. figures is recommended. For Full and Review Articles a short CV and a photo of each author should be submitted. Letters must be complete, self-contained papers, and not preliminary reports. The typical size of a Letter should be 3–4 printed pages. This corresponds to a maximum length of about 14,000 characters (with spaces) or 2,300 words plus 1–3 figures and a short reference list. 3. Manuscript Submission Manuscripts which are clearly inappropriate for the journal can be rejected without consulting referees. Authors are asked to make their manuscripts suitable for a heterogeneous readership. Please use a simple, clear style, and avoid jargon. In some cases, it might be helpful for manuscripts to be checked by a third party, such as Wiley English Language Editing Services for correct language usage before submission. Let Wiley Editing Services provide you with expert help to ensure your manuscript is ready for submission. All papers must be submitted via the online manuscript submission system. To navigate to the Journal of Biophotonics online submission site go to www.biophotonics-journal.org Manuscript Submission Online Submission of Manuscripts. For article templates, forms and other author resources, please visit the Author Guidelines. All queries regarding manuscripts or the online submission process should be addressed to the journal's Editorial Office: Editorial Office JBP Phone: +49-3641-948367 Fax: +49-3641-948302 E-mail: [email protected] 1 Initial Submission File types: Only electronic files conforming to the journal's guidelines will be accepted. Preferred formats for the text and tables of your manuscript are Word DOC, RTF, XLS, and LaTeX. Non-LaTeX users: Word files in any compatible format (DOC, RTF) are accepted. Text (including tables and figures) should be uploaded as "*Complete Manuscript" on the File Upload screen. Graphics should be embedded in the manuscript. Authors may use the JBP Word template to format their manuscripts. The template can be downloaded from the journal homepage www.biophotonicsjournal.org For Contributors). LaTeX users must submit a single PDF generated from the source files. At this stage, further source files are not required. LaTeX style files are available from the journal homepage www.biophotonicsjournal.org For Contributors. Abstracts should be no longer than 200 words. Please use impersonal or passive style instead of the active “we” form. Reviewing All contributions will be evaluated according to the standard procedures of peer review, usually by two referees. To facilitate the refereeing process, please provide the names and email addresses of at least three referees capable of reviewing your manuscript. Please make sure that the suggested referees are not too closely related to your own publications. Please note that not more than two revisions are allowed for reviewing. A third round of revision will not be considered. For final acceptance of manuscripts, an unanimous assent by two referees is required. Revised Manuscripts Revised manuscripts must be uploaded within 2 weeks (for letters) or 4 weeks (for review and original papers) of authors being notified of conditional acceptance pending satisfactory revision. Text, tables and figures need to be uploaded as a single Word DOC or RTF file. Upload this file as "*Revised Manuscript". Figures should preferably be submitted in full color, but should also be easily readable on a black/white printout. They need to be embedded in the manuscript but also uploaded as separate files in a graphic format such as TIFF, EPS or JPG with a resolution of 300 dpi or higher (see ‘Artwork’). For graphic files choose the designation "Production Data" on the File Upload screen in Editorial Manager. Journal of Biophotonics – Instructions to Authors (April 2017) LaTeX users: Revisions must still be uploaded as a single PDF generated from the revised source files. Please use the File Designation "*Revised Manuscript" from the dropdown box. In addition please upload your TeX source files including bbl and figure files. For all source files the File Designation "Production Data" must be used. Previous versions of uploaded documents must be deleted. If the manuscript is accepted for publication the uploaded files will be used to typeset the article within a totally digital workflow. Graphical Abstract: Please also submit an abstract text for the Table of Contents. It should be a maximum of 70 words, and should be written in impersonal or passive style. The table of contents text should be added on a separate page at the end of the manuscript or uploaded as “Production Data”. Supporting Information Authors may also submit supplementary material, for example videos or animations. The author bears full responsibility for the content of the supplementary material. Color and animated multimedia applications are welcome and published online at no cost to the author or reader. In general, the contents of the Supporting Information should be mentioned shortly in the article, e.g. as a footnote. Supplementary material is published online open and is directly linked to the main article on Wiley Online Library. In case of extra text, figures or tables please make sure to mention “Supporting Information, title of main article, article number, authors and affiliation” at the beginning of the supplementary material. Use page numbers starting from S1 to the respective end number page (e.g. S5). Supplementary material can be cited as part of the original article e.g. Smith et al., J. Biophotonics 7, 501-509 (2014), see online supporting information S1-S5. You may include captions for supplementary figures, tables or videos at the end of your manuscript. If not otherwise indicated, supplementary material is part of the peer-review process but is not copy-edited or typeset. Please use suitable compression technology to avoid exceedingly large movie files (>10 MB) for the benefit of referees' and readers' bandwidth and storage capacity. Also, please make sure that your movies are saved in a common format (such as MPEG, AVI, QuickTime, GIF) that can be played on at least two different computer platforms (out of Windows/ MacOS/ Linux). Please choose the File Designation "Supporting Information" on the File Upload screen. 2 4. Format and Style All illustrations must be supplied at the correct resolution: Standard fonts like Times, Helvetica, or Courier are preferred. Some fonts (e.g. Asian or Russian character fonts) may cause problems and should be avoided. Black and white and color photos: 300 dpi Graphs, drawings, etc: 800 dpi preferred; 600 dpi minimum The name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s) should be included in the Acknowledgements section at the end of the main text. Combinations of photos and drawings (black and white and color): 500 dpi The manuscript should contain the following elements: Full title (up to 150 characters) Full names and addresses of all authors Email, telephone and fax of the corresponding author Abstract (up to 200 words) Abstract figure (optional: short figure legend) Short title inclusive author names – up to 80 characters (A. Firstauthorname, B. Secondauthorname, and C. Thirdauthorname: Short title; OR: A. Firstauthorname et al.: Short title) Keywords, following the Medical Subject Headings list from ISI or MEDLINE/PubMed (at least four, up to eight key words) Main text including figures and captions List of references (numbered in the order of appearance in the text) Separate high-resolution figures (TIFF, EPS or JPG) with a resolution of at least 300 dpi Graphical Abstract: It should be a short descriptive and popular text on the general aim and value of your paper (up to 70 words, not a figure caption, not the abstract text) and should be written in impersonal or passive style. Please also suggest an image (full color, size: ideally 5 x 5 cm). It can be one from your article or may be specifically designed for the purpose. Further guidelines on artwork can be found here: Electronic_artwork_guidelines.pdf Equations Equations should be numbered sequentially. Except for small in-line equations, they should appear on separate lines. Please provide equations in an editable format, like Mathtype. Do not embed equations as graphics. In the text, equations may be referred to by writing "... in Eq. (1)". At the beginning of a sentence, use the full form "Equation (1) shows ...". References Please do not format the references section with the Numbering function of your word-processing program. We recommend the use of a tool such as EndNote (www.endnote.com) or Reference Manager (www.refman.com) for reference management and formatting. All references must be cited in numerical order in the text. The numbers of references should appear in the text in brackets e.g. [1, 21] or [1-4]. The reference list should show the references in numerical order as they appear in the text. Please send your references as a plain, unstructured list. Artwork From Journals Journal titles should be abbreviated according to the List of Journals abbreviations (see, e.g., Pubmed: ftp://ftp.ncbi.nih.gov/pubmed/J_Entrez.txt). Unpublished results and lectures should only be cited for exceptional reasons. Please give the names of all authors. Figures should preferably be submitted in full color, but should also be easily readable on a black/white printout. Color figures are reproduced in color at no cost. The preferred citation scheme is: Initials. Surnames (of all authors), Journal Title (abbreviated), Vol. No., pages (year of publication in brackets), e.g.: Upload each figure as a separate file in either TIFF, EPS or JPG format. Compound figures e.g. 1a, b, c should be uploaded as one figure. Tints are not acceptable. Lettering must be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible upon reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. Where a key to symbols is required, please include this in the artwork itself, not in the figure legend. [1] M. A. Short, H. Lui, D. I. McLean, H. Zeng, and M. X. Chen, Proc. Further Requirements Ethics In cases where a study involves the use of live animals or human subjects, authors must include in the appropriate section of the manuscript a statement that all experiments were performed in compliance with the relevant laws and institutional guidelines in accordance with the ethical standards of the Declaration of Helsinki. The institutional committees that have approved the experiments must be named. Authors must also include a statement that informed consent was obtained for any experimentation with human subjects. For more information see also: http://www.wiley-vch.de/euchems-ethics Conflict of Interest The Publisher requests that authors provide a statement of any conflicts of interest. The statement of declared interests will be published at the end of the article. Conflict of interest for a given manuscript exists when a participant in the peer review and publication process - author, reviewer, or editor - has ties to activities that could inappropriately influence his or her judgment, whether or not judgment is in fact affected. Journal of Biophotonics – Instructions to Authors (April 2017) Financial relationships with industry (i.e. through employment, consultancies, stock ownership, honoraria, expert testimony), either directly or through immediate family, are usually considered to be the most important conflicts of interest. However, conflicts can occur for other reasons, such as personal relationships, academic competition, and intellectual passion. For more information see also www.icmje.org/index.html 5. Copyright and Permissions To enable the publisher to disseminate the author's work to the fullest extent, the author must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement which is part of the submission process. If the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from online or intranet sources), it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts. The Permission request form can be downloaded from the journal homepage www.jbp-journal.org For Contributors). Permissions should be uploaded as "Production Data" or sent by email to the Publisher: Journal of Biophotonics WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA Rotherstrasse 21 10245 Berlin, Germany Fax: ++49-(0)30-47 03 13 99 E-mail: [email protected] 6. U.S. Government In the case of an article prepared under U.S. Government contract or grant, the U.S. Government may reproduce, without charge, all or portions of the article and may authorize others to do so, for official U.S. Government purposes only, if the U.S. Government contract or grant so requires. This is covered in full in both our Copyright Transfer Agreement (for standard articles) and Open Access Agreement (for Online Open articles). Self-Archiving definitions and policies Note that the journal’s standard copyright agreement allows for self-archiving of different versions of the article under specific conditions. Please click here for more detailed information about self-archiving definitions and policies. 7. Cover Pictures Journal of Biophotonics provides the possibility to have your article featured on the journal's cover page with an illustrative and eye-catching figure which graphically represents the essence of your paper. If your picture is chosen, it will be featured in the Table of Contents first place. You will receive a highresolution PDF file of the cover page for your personal use. Journal of Biophotonics – Instructions to Authors (April 2017) Prior to publication, authors will receive page proofs, to be downloaded from the online system. Authors should keep in mind that reading proofs is their responsibility. Corrections should therefore be clear and unambiguous. Corrections listed in an electronic file should be sorted by line numbers. The main aim of proofreading is to correct errors that may have occurred during the production process, and not to modify the content of the paper. The reproduction of artwork, the layout of the pages and breaks in equations introduced by the production staff should be checked carefully. Corrections that may lead to a change in the page layout should be avoided. Note that sending back a corrected manuscript file is of no use. Proof corrections should be returned to the publisher within 3 working days. 9. Early View Articles will be published online in the Early View section ahead of an issue publication. Early View articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised and edited for publication, and the authors’ final corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made subsequent to Early View publication. Early View articles can be cited and tracked by DOI. 10. Video Summaries A video summary can be a quick way to make the message of your research accessible to a much larger audience. Wiley and its partner Research Square offer a service of professionally produced video summaries, available to authors of articles accepted in this journal. You can learn more about it at https://www.researchsquare.com/wiley . If you have any questions, please direct them to [email protected].
