The Toledo Fire and Rescue Department and the Old Newsboys have a long history of working together. The Old Newsboys would like to graciously
thank TFRD for their many years of dedication in helping us continue our mission of helping children in need.

The 2016-17 president of the Old Newsboys Goodfellow
Association is Jeff Ogg. Jeff has served on the executive board since
2011.
Jeff was introduced to the organization by Pat Markland who
invited him to one of the Friday lunches back in October, 2007. He
did his first paper sale in December 2007. It was at that time that he
got a good feel about the mission of providing need to the financially
disadvantaged and has been a strong supporter of it ever since then.
Jeff stated “I always look forward to paper sale day every year. I
enjoy hearing the stories of people who have been helped by the
Old Newsboys decades before with a coat for the winter and food for the holidays. These
people then continue to pay it forward every year. This is what the Old Newsboys is all
about and I am proud to be a part of it.”
Jeff has also served on and has chaired the finance committee while on the Old
Newsboy’s executive board. He has been a part of recommending and approving grants to
organizations that provide similar services consistent with the Old Newsboy’s mission.
Jeff has been a part of the Toledo community since 2002 and is the owner of Jeffrey P.
Ogg, CPA Ltd since November 2003. During this time he has given back to the community
by serving on various non-profit boards. A significant part of his practice is helping other
non-profit organizations in the area with necessary tax and financial reporting so they can
go about fulfilling their missions of helping others.
“My belief is that each of us has a talent that we can use to help others. I help other
organizations with my financial expertise so that they can go about using their expertise to
fulfill their core mission to help the Toledo community.”
Jeff was born and raised in Flint, Michigan. During his time there, he saw what Old
Newsboys of Flint do for that community by providing a gift for children at Christmas and
coats and boots for the winter and was thrilled for the opportunity to help the Toledo Old
Newsboys do the same.

Honorary Paper Sale Chairman
Mr. Block said he is honored to be named the
Honorary Chairman of the 2016 Old Newsboys
Paper Sale.
He has been involved with the Newsboys his
entire life as has his family and Blade executives
have been involved since the Old Newsboys
began in 1929. He personally has supported the
organization for over 30 years.
Mr. Block states that this charity is the most
honest charity he is involved with as 100% of all
funds raised go towards the mission of helping
needy children and families in our area.
“If all charities operated like the Old Newsboys, there would be more good in
this community.” Mr. Block stated.
“BCI and The Blade will continue to support the Old Newsboys and I am proud
that our family is associated with this organization. This group represents the best
people in Toledo.”
Allan Block is Chairman of the Board of Block Communications, Inc., holding
that role since 2004. Previously, Mr. Block held several management positions
within the company and remains the Director/Chairman of several subsidiaries.
These companies span the cable, newspaper publishing, broadcast and telecom
industries; and under his leadership, have focused on innovation and quality. In
particular, the cable and telecom businesses have consistently out-rated similar
companies in customer satisfaction surveys.
Mr. Block serves on the board of directors at The Toledo Museum of Art and
C-SPAN. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA.
Jeff is married to Debby and has three daughters, Emily, Juliann, and Angela.
The Old Newsboys paper sale committee has unanimously chosen a brother and

the charity paper as a community involvement activity, and he has continued volunteering for the organization ever since. Not
only has he participated, but Steve has recruited many around him. His wife, Nancy Segura has sold the charity paper for many
years, and daughter Elaine Young has done so since her high school days. Even son-in-law, Chris has peddled a paper or two.
Steve’s daughters, Elaine, and Carolyn Imel, believe their father’s passion for the Old Newsboys stems from a dislike his own
father had for seeing children without shoes on. The Old Newsboys motto that “no child shall miss school for lack of coats or

Also a graduate of Waite High School, Marge, an avid fan of Michigan football, enjoys watching the many sporting events of her grandchildren
and great grandchildren. Marge has sold the charity paper at the Rite Aid in Rossford, and can be found smiling whether in rain, sleet or sunshine.
According to Michelle, the Old Newsboys helped the Segura’s in the past and her mother will therefore always give back.
Steve and Marge may be at odds when it comes to rooting for their favorite college football team, but they both have a drive for helping others
less fortunate. Annually, many families become active in the paper sale, however, none have matched the sheer numbers in which the Segura
family has devoted to the organization. Both have made volunteering a family affair.

Old Newsboys Goal: Our goal has been the same since our founding in 1929.
We provide immediate emergency service when a school administrator,
teacher, police officer, fire official, or neighbor reports a child in need. The
Newsboys motto: ‘assistance without delay’
Mission: The Old Newsboys are driven by a straight-forward, yet important
mission: “No child shall miss school for lack of shoes or coat.”
Company Overview
Every December, Old Newsboys volunteers brave the cold and elements to man area street corners to
“hawk” their Charity Edition Newspaper. Typically, they usually raise about $200,000 in a single day!
100% of every penny collected goes to provide emergency assistance to Toledo area school children.
Additionally, the Newsboys distribute 11 college scholarships annually to deserving high school seniors.
They also serve as emergency back-up to fund the Northwest Ohio Food Bank throughout the year, and
provide financial assistance to numerous other local groups that focus on supporting needy kids and
families in our area.
No child has ever been denied service.
The Old Newsboys Goodfellow Association provides aid and relief to the financially disadvantaged of
Northwest Ohio through several programs:
• Distribution of clothing and shoes to needy children in the area through the use of vouchers
distributed by school administrators on an as needed basis.
• Donations to charitable organizations including non-profit groups providing services and assistance
to needy youths in the area.
• Distribution of boxes of food and toys during the holiday season to needy families in the area.
• Distribution of boxes of food throughout the year to needy families.

Family House
The Old Newsboys are well
known for providing coats and
shoes to kids in need.
In addition, we often meet
the needs of others who are
in the business of helping
people. Family House is dedicated to providing
homeless families in crisis with professional,
comprehensive housing and social services in
a safe, caring environment. Their goal is to help
families in their time of crisis find permanent
housing, help them regain control over their
lives, and reclaim their independence. Providing
3 meals a day to an average of 36 families at
a time can be challenging without the right
equipment. Chef Marshall was working with a
nice mixer, but it was too small to meet their
daily needs. He would sometimes make 8
batches to serve one meal. The Old Newsboys
purchased a commercial mixer and delivered it
on September 8th. Everyone, especially Chef
Marshall, was thrilled! They had smiles from ear
to ear. This one item will make it so much easier
and more efficient for them to feed families in
their time of crisis. Thanks to Family House
for the care they provide to an average of 300
families every year. We are proud to be your
partner. To learn more about Family House, visit

The Old Newsboys Deliver a Helping Hand in
2015-16...$300,000 in Coats, Shoes, Food Baskets,
High School Scholarships, Local Social Agency
Assistance, Drug Awareness Programs and
Emergency Relief for Our Community
(Toledo, OH.) – The past year the Old Newsboys Goodfellow Association
worked hard for our community, but their work is not the type of work related
to a job, nor the kind that is considered a hand out. The Old Newsboys
work is that of assistance and a hand up with dignity for our community.
With no red tape, our organization provided over $165,000 in relief. With
help from over 300 schools, unions, policemen, firemen, sheriffs, outreach
organizations, hundreds of life members and volunteers in 2015-2016, the
Old Newsboys relief efforts delivered area families a helping hand with warm
coats, hats, gloves, shoes and emergency food baskets.
Children attending Public, Parochial, Charter or Private schools in grades
Kindergarten through Twelve benefited from a brand new coat, warm hat and
gloves, and pair of new shoes. Pre-school and even home-schooled children
were reached. If a Policeman, Fireman, Teacher or School Administrator
recognizes a child in need, without red tape or restriction, the Old Newsboys
filled the request. Union leaders also identified member ranks in need and
provided many families with emergency food relief. Since 1929 the Old
Newsboys have recognized the importance of helping those less fortunate,
and today that effort continues to be the driving goal of the organization.
The Old Newsboys offer emergency vouchers to school districts
reaching far across the Northwestern Ohio region. The list totals nearly
300 organizations and continues to grow each year. Affiliate schools and
organizations complete the vouchers on-line. The vouchers are then printed,
approved by the issuer, and presented to the person in need. It is with this
efficient and innovative process that the Old Newsboys are able to continue
to reach more children, in more schools each and every year.
Principals, Teachers, Police Officers, Fire Personnel, Public and Union
Officials often become aware of families in emergency crisis or families
that have experienced complete loss of all their possessions. Burnouts,
homelessness and complete loss of wages often present families with
nowhere to turn. The Old Newsboys Emergency Relief and Special Family
Crisis assistance is there. Principals, Police and Fire representatives identify
specific needs during these times of crisis and the Newsboys go to work.
Clothing, personal care items, dishes, laundry detergent, dressers, cabinets
and even inflatable beds for children sleeping on dirt floors have been included
in many of these special relief requests. Over $30,000 was spent last year
delivering a little help to families when times may have looked their worst.
The motto of the Old Newsboys has long been that “no child shall miss
school for want of a warm coat or pair of shoes.” Each year the need increases.
Last winter over 5,000 vouchers were processed and quickly filled with the
help of a partner and friend, The Andersons Store. Located at Talmadge and
Monroe Streets in Toledo, the store managers and customer service agents
willingly assist the families with selection of coats and shoes and validate the
vouchers. Distribution of coats and shoes at this large volume would not be
easily accomplished without the Andersons assistance.

The generous and helpful relationship the Old Newsboys has established
with the Andersons allows for reduced costs for coats and shoes allowing this
important addition to making a trip to school a little warmer for our children.
High school students often need a warm coat in winter. With help from the
Andersons, the Old Newsboys even offer a high school style coat that keeps
our young adults warm with a look that urban school teens are comfortable
wearing. Quietly and quickly the Old Newsboys answer the request.
Through the help of our great friends and partner at the Toledo Seagate
Food Bank, the Old Newsboys distributed nearly $15,000 in emergency food
baskets in 2015-16. Generous baskets of healthy and nourishing foods were
distributed at holiday time and throughout the year to families struggling to
get complete meals to their kitchen tables.
The Old Newsboys help with more than just coats and shoes for children.
Over the last year, the Old Newsboys helped Lucas County Sheriff, John
Tharp, an Old Newsboys Past President, with a gift of $40,000 to help in the
efforts the Sheriff’s Office is spearheading with their DART unit. This Drug
Abuse Response Team unit has recognized the devastating loss that drugs
and heroin cause families. The profound number of local deaths of loved
ones caused by opiate overdoses is staggering. Children often end up on
the short end or abandoned by parents hooked on this highly addictive drug.
The DART unit attempts to reach out to those using, and help get these folks
the rehabilitation and information they need to get off this deadly drug.
Following the line-of-duty loss of Falko, the Toledo Police K-9 four-legged
patrolman, the Old Newsboys reached out to TPD and purchased bulletproof
vests to keep K-9 unit dogs safe. The Old Newsboys also fund $55,000
in scholarships each year for area high school seniors. The scholarships
are used to help students continue in post secondary education. These are
just a few ways of note that the Old Newsboys help our community. The
Newsboys also recognize one-time grant requests. Over the years, the Old
Newsboys have helped hundreds of organizations that help local children
and their families.
The 2015-2016 year for the Old Newsboys has been filled with doing
the work we do best. The Newsboys help many in our community in many
different ways. When a community member needs a helping hand, we offer
the hands of the Old Newsboys Volunteer membership. Last year, the Old
Newsboys collected $187,000 during the charity paper sale and donation
collection. It is easily noticed that this figure does not come close to the
level of relief our organization provided in the same year. We need your help!!
Please purchase a paper and make a donation to the Old Newsboys so that
we can keep up this level of help in our community. It is heart-warming to
know that your dollars collected here go directly back to our community. The
Old Newsboys hear a call for help and they fill the need. It is with your kind
donation that we are able to continue to do this work.
For 86 years, beginning in 1929, the Old Newsboys Goodfellow
Association has been a 100% volunteer organization. Not one person is paid
for their efforts. Membership in the Newsboys is a proud commitment to
helping our community in many ways and helping children feel the warmth of
a new coat or brand new pair of shoes. Our organization is always looking for
more members. If your interests are similar, please consider joining our ranks.
Leadership, friendship and a sense of willingness to help others are all the
requirements you need. The Old Newsboys is a way to help your community,
with no red tape, while building lifelong friendships and placing resources in
the hands of those who need help and often cannot, or will not, ask for it.

Day weekend 2016 in epic fashion. Huron Street was closed down and a huge tent was
erected next to The Blarney. ONGA and L92 Charities provided thousands of volunteer hours to
make this event happen for the thousands of attendees who came downtown to celebrate. Workers
were tasked with duties like pouring beer, checking IDs and selling tickets. The Old Newsboys
would like to thank all of our volunteers as well as The Blarney for their continued support in helping
us help others!

In Memoriam
As Toledo’s Old Newsboys Goodfellow span the
city, they will do the work that has served this
community for so many years. But this year will be
different as some of their most loyal workers will be
missing from the street corners and intersections.
“Old Newsies” recall with a great sense of heritage
the loyal work of those faithful servants whose
labor shaped the founding association. This year we
remember those who we have lost this past year, but
whose legacy will continue to thrive through our
ranks and to the hearts of those we will continue
to serve.

Old Newsboys Charity Paper Sale Collects $188,265
The Old Newsboys Goodfellow Association is a 100% volunteer organization that raises funds to help provide shoes and coats to children in
need as well as food for families in need throughout the Greater Toledo Area. The Old Newsboys Goodfellow Association raised $188,265 from
their 86th annual charity paper sale held on December 4th, 2015. Although short of their $200,000 goal Paper Sale Chairman Jeff Ogg deemed
it a success The Old Newsboys also earn additional funds through their annual golf outing, Shoe Bowl Football Event, and St. Patrick’s Day
drive. The funds raised will go to provide coats and shoes for children in need through their partnership with The Andersons. The Old Newsboys
also provides clothing and emergency food for other families in need throughout the Greater Toledo Metropolitan area. Last winter, the Old
Newsboys still provided $133,381 worth of clothing and shoes and $4,934 in emergency food baskets to the community.

Old Newsboys Goodfellows Association Awards Eleven $5,000 Scholarships
While the principle mission of the Old Newsboys is to provide short-term help to
needy children and their families, the organization also provides a form of aid with long
range planning in mind.
It is an investment in the future of our community made in the form of $5,000
college scholarships awarded to students who have overcome exceptional hardship to
achieve excellence in Toledo-area high schools. Candidates must have demonstrated
academic achievement, a commitment to learning and community service.
Old Newsboys Scholarship recipients may elect to further their education any way
they like. It may be college, it may be vocational school, or it may even be used to augment
the limited income of apprenticeship training.
The recipient presents bills to the Old Newsboys Scholarship Treasurer, who in
turn, writes checks against the
recipient’s scholarship account to
the creditor for approved expenses.
Some 73 applications from the
class of 2015 were submitted this
year, and were narrowed down to 16
finalists.
The finalists were interviewed
by scholarship committee members
and recipients were honored at the
