They are geared toward a commercial operation because, “in the end we are all selling pounds and Salers cattle will do just that.” In addition to livestock, the Konow Family also farms and will show participants about Kentucky farming. Joe, Chad and Corey welcome you to Kentucky. Diamond J – Eubank, KY 2015 marks the 60th year of Diamond J Farms. He went to a commercial herd and began to test different breeds of bulls on his herd. In 1992, he purchased a Salers bull and the next years calf crop was what AMERICAN SALERS he had been looking for. He began purchasing Salers cows and today, his small herd of purebred Salers located in Eubank, Kentucky, is run by Donald and wife Lana. It has about 50 buildings, including a saloon, a church, jail, firehouse, livery and a train station. The town sits on 420 acres in the Bear Ranch below the Ragged Wilderness Area. Its full-sized buildings come with polished brass and carved-mahogany details and are fronted with board sidewalks and underpinned by a water-treatment system. Salers participants are in for a rare treat as Bill Koch’s Old West Town is not open to the public. Figure 4 Cattle Company – Somerset, CO The Volk Ranch was established in 1911 and is currently operated by George, Gary & Gail Volk. The summer home for Figure 4 Cattle lies under this one of a kind Ragged Mountain. A five 16 mile long mountain rises from 9000 to 12,000 feet in elevation almost straight up. In the late 80’s George Jr., Gary and wife-Gail built the herd from 35 to 700 head of high percentage Salers; including over 100 head of full French Salers cows. We are trying our best to maintain the true Salers genetics that took the cattle industry by storm in the 80”s and 90’s. Hoover Dam – Nevada Hoover Dam (also known as Boulder Dam) is one of the largest in America. It was built between 1931 and 1936 across Black Canyon and above the mighty Colorado River. It’s a national historical landmark with remarkable views of the Colorado River, Lake Mead, and the canyons and valleys surrounding it. The dam is named after Herbert Hoover, the U.S. president who agreed to have the dam built so that Nevada, California, and Arizona could increase irrigation waters and manage flood waters, and create hydroelectric-power. It was built in just five years an impressive feat, considering the dam is made of enough concrete to pave a road from New York to California. Hoover Dam stands 726 feet (220 m) above the Colorado River. The observation deck set above the dam provides scenic, 360-degree views of the Colorado River and nearby Lake Mead.
