DCS Excellence Awards
Winners of the Minister’s Bursary - Woodford Correctional Centre’s Crisis Support Unit
The Department has recognised and rewarded the efforts of its staff
with the presentation last month of the 2005 DCS Excellence Awards.
The Minister’s Bursary, the Director-General’s Awards, DCS long and
meritorious service awards, and individual and team excellence
awards for service delivery, leadership and collaboration, and
innovation were presented by Corrective Services Minister Judy
Spence and Director-General Frank Rockett at Parliament House.
This year’s $10,000 Minister’s Bursary was won by Woodford Crisis
Support Unit staff Paul Niven, Lynette Addison, Glenn Hanson and
Jennifer Wells for their ability to manage difficult prisoners on a daily
basis.
Ms Spence said the unit, which caters for prisoners at risk of selfharm or suicide, had demonstrated beyond expectations their critical
attention to detail, high levels of teamwork and good communication.
The unit will be able to use the bursary funds for education and training
to further the Department’s strategic direction, mission and values.
Last year’s Bursary winners, the Southern Region Drug Court Team,
are using their funds to assist two drug court officers to undertake a
Graduate Certificate in Addiction Studies.
“Corrective Services staff are the quiet achievers of our law
enforcement system and often their accomplishments occur away
from the public eye,” said Ms Spence.
“I believe it’s important to thank and recognise the people who help
maintain a safe, secure and humane correctional system for the safety
of the community.”
The Director-General’s Awards were awarded to six teams and
individuals recognising their contribution and dedication to the
Department in a variety of fields ranging from staff and community
safety to offender supervision.
Team Excellence Awards were presented to the Media and
Communications Unit, the Brisbane Women’s Visits Team and the
Community-Based Order Notification Team.
A special presentation was also made to the family of Wynnum
Community Corrections Officer Tony Hill who passed away in April.
Tony’s wife, mother and children were presented with Tony’s
posthumous award for 25 years long and meritorious service to the
Department.
