Photo by Chris Oxley U.S. Navy Photo Shipbuilders Show Support for the U.S. Military By Wearing Blue Shipbuilders working in the Machine Shop, Repair Machine Shop and the Complex Component Assembly Facility are showing their support for the men and women of the United States military every Friday by wearing blue. “The idea to wear blue t-shirts came about last year when several shipbuilders and I were talking with a sailor assigned to the USS Theodore Roosevelt,” said M53 General Foreman B.A. Smith. “During our conversation, we asked the sailor if there was anything that Newport News shipbuilders could do to make his job easier. The sailor responded, ‘We need you to keep building us the very best naval vessels in the world, but most of all we need your continued support and prayers.’ With that being said, Machine Shop shipbuilders have decided to wear blue every Friday to show support for the men and women in uniform and to remember why we do what we do every day here at Newport News Shipbuilding.” Superintendent Joey Perry added, “The Machine Shop encourages other shipbuilders to do the same and join us -- wear blue on Fridays and support our military.” Shipbuilders Share Thoughts About Independence Day “I think it’s important to celebrate Independence Day because it allows us, as a nation, to step back and recognize the effort of generations that have gone into maintaining our independence for 236 years.” Gene Wells (K32) “We as a country fought very hard for our independence, so I think it is very important that we continue to celebrate our freedom.” Ronnie Adams (X11) “We have so many armed forces all over the world these days. Celebrating Independence Day is a way of thanking them.” Ruth Ann Morton (M20) Fourth of July Holiday Reminder Newport News Shipbuilding will be CLOSED for the Independence Day holiday on Wednesday, July 4. Due to the nature of shipyard operations, it will be necessary for some employees to work on the holiday. Supervisors will notify employees if they are required to report to work on the holiday. The event, hosted by Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) is a key component of the regional plan to revitalize the industrial sector of the economy. Harry Moser, Quality Magazine’s 2012 Man of the Year, was the keynote speaker at the event and spoke about the North American Reshoring Initiative he founded as well as the revitalization of manufacturing jobs. The mission of the reshoring initiative is to bring good, well-paying manufacturing jobs back to the United States. The initiative assists companies with more accurately assessing their total cost of offshoring and shift collective thinking from “offshoring is cheaper” to “local reduces the total cost of ownership.” Other speakers included Everett Jordan, director of The Apprentice School, who addressed the schools impact on work force development and Bob Granata (K03), director of Newport News Nuclear, who shared how business innovation drives the economic growth of NNS, the region and supply base.
