136th Commencement
“We are ambassadors of Christ,
bearing the message of reconciliation! Doesn’t it seem crazy that the
savior of the world would entrust
such a mission to the likes of us?”
Speaking to 50 graduates on
Commencement night, Dr. James
K.A. Smith of Calvin College encouraged them that God uses the foolish
of this world to confound the wise;

“The love of Christ constrains
us to immerse ourselves in the mud and muck and sin of a broken world
because it was Christ’s love that propelled him to be sin for us,” Dr. Smith
said. “So what does the ministry of reconciliation look like?”
He paused, smiled and answered: “The imitation of Christ.”
Western Theological Seminary celebrated its 136th Commencement on
Monday evening, May 7, in the Dimnent Memorial Chapel on the campus of
Hope College. The seminary awarded 40 Master of Divinity (M.Div.), six Master of Theology (Th.M.), one Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.), and three Graduate
Certificates in Urban Pastoral Ministry (GCUPM).
President Tim Brown ended the evening with Matthew 5:6, “Blessed are

he turned to the graduates and said, “I charge you to spike a temperature and
carry a low-grade fever wherever you go. Be hungry and thirsty until that last
great day when no one hungers or thirsts anywhere throughout the earth!”

This year’s class got to experience
something unusual: one of their
professors graduating too.

Wendell married Joyce Hughes of Greenville, SC in 1960. Joyce held degrees
from Bryan College and the Wheaton Graduate School of Theology. They had four
children: Stephen (1962), Philip (1965), Rachel (1968) and Andrew (1977). Joyce
served with Wendell as an RCA missionary in Taiwan and Hong Kong from 19691984. She co-founded the Wai Ji Christian Service, a major program for mentally
and physically challenged young people in Hong Kong.

Wendell is now fully retired but continues
to work on several books and does occasional
preaching. He and Renske have six grandchildren.
In 2010 they moved to the Penney Farms Retirement Community in north Florida. They have
joined a local church where they enjoy singing in
the choir and where Wendell serves
as an elder and chair of the mission
committee. Renske serves as a nurse
at the PRC medical center, and they
both work at the PET factory that
manufactures hand-driven carts for
people in third world countries who
have lost the use of their legs. Together they enjoy gardening, traveling, walking, cycling, photography,
music and reading. Wendell also

In summing up his long career,
Wendell says, “Looking back, God
has given me so many opportunities

has been due solely to his amazing

Wendell married Renske Greve in 1991. She was born in the Netherlands and
immigrated to the USA with her family as a 6-year-old. She holds degrees from
Wheaton College and College of DuPage. She had careers in teaching, nursing and
business, serving as a Management Consultant for the ServiceMaster Corporation
for ten years. She also served with Wendell as an RCA missionary in Hong Kong and
Indonesia from 1991-2000.
In 2003, Wendell and Renske traveled to Taiwan as guests of the government.
There Wendell was presented with an award for assisting in the development of
democracy and human rights during the “white terror” period by the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy, and he met with President Chen Shui-bian.

fruit?” he was asked. “I don’t care who
picks the fruit,” Branch Rickey’s father
replied. “I intend to live each day as if I
am going to live forever.”
Isn’t that a great perspective for how
we should go through life? What seeds
are you planting for future generations to
harvest?
Not long ago we received a large,
unexpected gift from a couple who had
thought that way about the future. When
we looked at their donor history, we saw
their last gift had been quite modest -only $20, given several years ago. Now,
because they had included Western Theological Seminary in their will, they were
10
able to give a gift exponentially beyond
anything they’d been able to do previously.
Planned giving like this allows people of
ơ
who give transformational gifts.
Would you like to do something like
that? I’d love to have a conversation with
you about joining the Zwemer Society,
a group whose members have informed
us of their decision to include Western
in their estate plan. By including WTS in
your will, you can plant seeds today that
will bear fruit far beyond your imagination in future generations.

News from Western Theological Seminary
Hard to Say Goodbye
by Vern Hoffman
6U$VVRFLDWH'LUHFWRURI$GYDQFHPHQW
Some 21 years ago I left the pastorate to begin advancement work at Western Theological Seminary. At that time I
thought I’d probably work six to nine years and then retire.
Somehow that has stretched to 21 years,
ǡ͟͠ǡǯƤing what for me has been incredibly wonderful work.
As I’m preparing to leave the seminary, however, I’m discovering that saying goodbye is hard to do. Of course,
my wife Carol and I will continue to see
many friends at seminary events like the
President’s Club, the scholarship luncheons and the Zwemer Society dinners.
Vern Hoffman
But these events are attended mostly by
people living in West Michigan. Through the years my Western Seminary friendship base has come to include people in
places like Florida, Illinois, Washington, Iowa, California, and
Canada. That’s where the rub comes. I wonder how many of
these friends I’ll be able to continue to see.
I’ve had the privilege of initiating and maintaining these
contacts, and— imagine this! — I’ve even been paid for it.
I’ve enjoyed friendships with fellow Christians who share
many common values and I’ve dared to call it work. It’s been
more friendship than work, and all of it has been pure joy.
The seminary has been thoughtful and gracious beyond
belief in announcing my leaving and honoring me at various
events during the past several months. But especially for
those of you who were not present at any of those events, I
grow melancholy and with sadness take this opportunity to
say goodbye. I wish there were a way to say farewell in person to each one of you.
Thank you for your friendship, which I cherish, and for
making my job so easy and satisfying through your support
of Western Seminary. It’s a great school, doing the wonderful work of preparing men and women for all types of
Christian ministries. I think the greatest going away present
anyone could give me is for you to continue your support.
Please say you will!
Goodbye and God bless you.

A Note from President Tim Brown
I love how this issue of The Commons “bookends”
God’s faithfulness to Western Theological Seminary—
on the one end we have the promise of
new graduates, about to be unleashed
on the world, and on the other end we
have the stories of two long-time alums
with a lifetime of service in the vineyard
of the Lord.
What a thrill it was to recently honor
both Elton Bruins and Wendell Karsen
with the “Distinguished Alumni” Award.
Could any two be more deserving?
These men have been Holy Spirit gifts
of God to the church, and I was deeply
blessed many years ago as a student
of Elton’s at Hope College and recently as I worked
alongside Wendell when he led the Master of
Theology program here between 2001 and 2006.
Words cannot begin to describe my joy in
watching 50 men and women walk across the
platform of Dimnent Chapel and turn their
tassels toward the service of the gospel as they
take their part in leading the church in mission.
I invite you to read this edition of The
Commons as a prayer for our graduates! My
deep prayer is that they will be as faithful to the
work of the gospel as Elton and Wendell, and
that someday, ages and ages hence, they will
hear the Beloved saying to them, “Well done,
good and faithful servants!”
Read and pray!
