Unit 10: Generate and Represent Measurement Data to Solve Problems
Learning Goal
Students will understand how to generate measurement data and be able to represent data to solve
problems.
Unit Overview
Students extend their understanding of measurement, addition, and subtraction to generate
and represent measurement data to solve real world problems.
Link to Represent and Interpret Data Learning Scale (Use entire scale for this unit)
Essential Question(s)
Why is it important to be able to organize and graph data?
What can you learn from data?
Focus Standards
Some standards may be revisited several times during the course; others may be only partially
addressed in different units, depending on the focus. The text of the standards written in black
font denote this focus. Text which is deemphasized with gray font will not be addressed in this
unit, but will be addressed in subsequent units. (adapted from the Charles A. Dana Center)

Bullets are the deconstructed standards These should be used to develop concise learning statements/daily
objectives/scales.
3rd Grade: Students generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with
halves and fourths of an inch. Show data by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is
marked off in appropriate units.
MAFS.2.OA.1.1 (DOK 2) Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems
involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns
in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent
the problem.

Identify the unknown in an addition or subtraction word problem.

Determine the appropriate operations needed to solve addition and subtraction problems in
situations including add to, take from, put together, take apart, and compare.

Use drawings or equations to represent one- and two-step word problems.

Add and subtract within 100 to solve one-step word problems with unknowns in any position.

Write an addition and subtraction equation with a symbol for the unknown.
Resources
Be selective in choosing problems aligned to the
standards within each lesson. The unit sequence
should be determined through collaborative unit
planning.
1st Grade: Students organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories.

What would you use to represent the
data collected and why did you
choose to use that tool?
How can you best show that set of
data? How does that method help
you tell about that data?
Why is it important to be able to
organize and graph data?
How else could you represent the
data?
