Maraisburg, 18 February 2010 Goodman Nhlanhla Hlope was born in Soweto in 1982. His father used to hit his mother and she divorced him. Money and food were scarce. As a teenager he washed taxis at the Baragwanath taxi rank. He got into drugs - cannabis and mandrax - and started to rob people in Hillbrow in 1996. He preyed on white people at bus stops. “I address you, don’t try to be a hero. I want money, jewellery and cell phones ... you give and I go. If you make corruption with me then I’ll stab you. I don’t care if you die ... Yes Sir!” Joining with three others and using guns, he became a hijacker. Caught for robbery he was sentenced to three years and served 21 months. Then warned by a friend that robbery could get him a 15 year sentence, he switched to smash-and-grab theft. Waiting at intersections for cars to stop, he would smash a window with a sharp blow from a spark plug and then grab what he could and run. On one occasion in 2005 he got away with R4000. Half went to his accomplice and R900 to his mother to buy food for his brother and sister. But on an afternoon in March 2005, on the N1 off-ramp to Maraisburg, two men saw him at work and chased and caught him. He was sentenced to four years in prison and served two. He now relies on “ordinary piece work”. He says, “I am a changed man. I saw some things in my life. Ja, I’ve got a bright future now.” Silver gelatin photograph on fibre based paper Paper Size: 55 x 68 cm Edition 1 of 15 Estimate: R48 000.00–R50 000.00 64 2011 AUCTION GOODMAN GALLERY JOHANNESBURG SUNDAY 14 AUGUST 2011 REGISTRATION FORM Please forward completed form to [email protected] or [email protected] or fax to +27 11 788 9887 I WILL BE ATTENDING THE AUCTION (YOUR BIDDING NO. Lots are sold to the successful buyer on an “as is” basis at buyer’s risk. All works are illustrated in the catalogue, and shall be available for viewing on the 3 days prior to the auction event. Bidders are advised to examine works of interest to them, and are welcome to request information on the condition of works. The sellers may withdraw a lot at their discretion, and any withdrawals will be announced at the commencement of the auction. Estimates listed for lots are not absolute values, but are linked to the range of market values on the artist’s similar works, and indicate an opinion on the likely hammer price. Some works will be sold without reserve to the highest bidder, regardless of estimate, and others may not sell unless the bidding has reached a reserve price established by the seller. The latter will remain unsold in this event. There will be no additional buyers’ premiums on the hammer price of any lot, but all hammer prices will be subject to added 14% VAT, unless to be exported by the Goodman Gallery. All prices and estimates will be quoted only in SA Rands. The sale of any lot will be deemed binding on acceptance of a final bid. Ownership will only be transferred on receipt of payment of hammer price plus 14% VAT. Unless otherwise arranged with the Goodman Gallery, payments should take place within 48 hours of the auction, and works collected, or delivery arranged with the gallery directly after payment. Shipping or delivery charges outside the Johannesburg area shall be for the bidder’s account, and quotation of such charges can be arranged. Bidders’ personal details will not be passed on to any third party unless necessary for shipping and delivery. Insurance risk on any lot will transfer upon delivery or collection. Storage charges may be attracted if collection or delivery cannot be completed within a period of time agreed with the Goodman Gallery. Failure to pay for any lot within the specified period (or such period as may be mutually agreed between bidder and the Goodman Gallery) will result in the cancellation of the sale to the bidder, title to the work shall not transfer, and possession of the lot shall be retained by the seller. If paying by electronic transfer please remit funds to the following bank account: Goodman Gallery, Nedbank Branch Code, 197205, Account Number, 1972000381, Swift Code, NEDSZAJJ Please fax transfer details to 011 788 9887, or let us know when a cheque will be ready to collect.
