NAZAARAY ESTATE WINERY – MORNINGTON PENINSULA
KEY MESSAGES
How do you match Indian food and fine wine?
Easy! Just balance the wine, food and spices, and they're great table mates, says Nirmal Ghumman of
Nazaaray Estate. Her very popular Tiffin lunches may include dishes such as chicken kka (perfect with
Pinot Gris), tandoori prawns (match with Chardonnay) and game such as tandoori quail or duck (Pinot
Noir). Lunches are generally held six weekly, on a Sunday.
Sipping and hopping
Sip a glass of fine Nazaaray Estate wine on the cellar door viewing deck, and at dusk you may see
kangaroos hopping by. The deck overlooks the estate's peaceful farmland and the wildlife haven of
Greens Bush, part of the Mornington Peninsula Na onal Park. Kangaroos bound across the farmland and
along tree corridors which Nazaaray Estate has planted from the road to Greens Bush.
A ra ling good me
Melbourne's vintage 'red ra ler' train carriages are famous, but few have ended up as lunch venues at a
winery. Nirmal Ghumman of Nazaaray Estate took such a fancy to these World War II relics that she
bought two, restored them, and now uses them for her Sunday Tiffin lunches at the vineyard.
What does 'Nazaaray' mean?
In Persian, it means 'beau ful visions' and was chosen because of the magnificent, sweeping views of the
Mornington Peninsula from Nazaaray Estate. This is the Peninsula's southernmost vineyard, and it's just a
10 minute drive to famous coastal features including Flinders, Cape Schanck and the wild ocean beaches
along Bass Strait.
One of Australia's only Indian-born winemakers
Paramdeep Ghumman, co-owner and winemaker at Nazaaray Estate, had his first sip of wine on an
interna onal flight at the age of 30, when he emigrated from India to Australia with his doctor wife
Nirmal in 1981. He has made up for lost me, crea ng superb single vineyard wines totally by hand in
one of the Mornington Peninsula's smallest commercial vineyards.
Pinot Noir: the ul mate challenge
Known as the 'heartbreak grape', Pinot Noir is fickle, unpredictable and the ul mate challenge for
winemakers. Paramdeep Ghumman of Nazaaray Estate fell under its spell long ago, and has seen his
Pinots develop in character from a frui er style to a spicier spectrum as the vines mature. In a region
interna onally known for the quality of its Pinot Noir, Paramdeep's Pinot Noir Reserve 2008 was the only
young Mornington Pinot Noir to win a medal at London's 2010 Interna onal Wine Challenge.
