Project Ready Family Literacy
Families with children in K - 5th will engage in an interactive read-aloud plus text
talk based on three objectives: encourage students to become active learners
during book reading, provide feedback that models more sophisticated language
and challenge children's knowledge and skills by raising the complexity of the

Read Alouds
Making It Better will offer Read Aloud opportunities to 9 HISD elementary 1st grade
classrooms in West Houston, NRG stadium and Fifth Ward areas for 4 weeks.
Volunteers will read to a classroom for 30 minutes once a week. Volunteers needed

iWRITE, Legacy Community Health, the Houston Public Library, the Harris County
Public Library and the Children’s Museum of Houston will be hosting a family
literacy event at Houston Housing Authority Kelly Village. At this event, our
wonderful partners will be providing fun, educational activities to the residents
including comic book writing, read alouds, and a Lego robotics build. In addition,
the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation is partnering with the Houston
Housing Authority to dedicate a library to Kelly Village.
