Project List for Beowulf
Select one (1) of the following projects. Your project will be due on Friday, September 4, 2015.
Projects may be turned in earlier, but they will not be accepted after the due date. Remember,
this is a project and as such is counted as a test grade; therefore, you will receive 2 grades for
this.
Please follow all directions given here. If you do not understand something, ask me. Do not
procrastinate!!!
1. Time Capsule Select a container to be your capsule. Suggested items: a plastic container with a
lid, a shoe box, an empty oatmeal container, a realistic wooden chest (Hobby
Lobby is a good place to find these.
 Decorate your container – brown paper bag, material, something to cover it and to
make it look old.
 Place in the capsule at least 6 items related to the story of Beowulf. Suggested
ideas: a piece of fur (from fighting Grendel), an arm (playdoh works well), a
fancy cup stolen from the dragon, a toy dagger (not flimsy paper please), fake
gold coins from the dragon’s treasure, a necklace (what Queen Wealthow gave to
Beowulf), a diary (at least 10 entries from Beowulf), the head of Grendel or
Mama.
2. Beowulf Talk Show or Video Scene Reenactment– Group Assignment (3 members)
Develop a talk show segment or interview with Grendel’s mother that discusses her point of
view after the loss of her son and reasons why she chose to attack Herot and Beowulf, or do a
videoed scene reenactment of one of Beowulf’s fights or speeches. This may be modernized to a
present-day setting, but major plot elements must remain intact. A script should be given to the
teacher on the day of the presentation. The segment should not exceed five minutes. Not all
members are required to act in the skit, but all members must share responsibilities assigned.
Lines should be memorized, and costumes are expected for the actors! You have the option of
recording this instead of a live presentation. It should be a minimum of 5 minutes.
3. Beowulf Board Game – Individual Assignment
Create an original game based on Beowulf’s characters and events. Your game should include
playing pieces, a clear set of instructions, and some sort of sturdy board. It should be decorated.
Not in pencil please. When people play the board game, they should learn and understand what
transpires in the story; for instance, when players draw cards that direct their next move, the
cards instruct them to perform an action that happens in the story.
4. Illustration of 1 or all of Beowulf’s battles.
 This must be on canvas or art paper; not poster board or computer paper.
 Size must be a minimum or 8X10.
 You may use any of the following mediums:
o Paint
o Charcoal
o Colored pencils
5. Create the sword Hrunting
 You may use wood, Styrofoam, or heavy/thick cardboard or poster board. You are not to
use any store bought swords.
 Your sword must be sword length – at least 2 feet in length.
 It should be sturdy – not flimsy.
 It should be painted or decorated – not just plain wood, etc.
6. Create a shield
 You may use wood, Styrofoam, or heavy/thick cardboard or poster board.
 Your shield should be divided into at least 3 sections. Each section must contain a
symbol which represents who you are.
 It should be done neatly with paint, markers, or colored pencils.
 It must have a handle on the back.
7. Create a children’s book or a comic strip telling the story of Beowulf.
 If creating a cartoon, check out www. Toondoo.com for help in your creation. You need
at least 10 cartoon scenes. They should be in color.
 You need at least 10 pages if creating a book. Each page should be illustrated and in
color along with the information about the story. The information should be age
appropriate for a kid’s book. Ex. “ Beowulf traveled a long distance.” Picture could show
him on a boat.
 Create a cover and a back for your book or cartoon strip.
8. Create a rap son about Beowulf’s greatest battles.
 Your rap should include at least 30 lines (10 per battle: Grendel, Mama, Dragon).
 You must provide a typed copy of the lyrics.
 Your rap should be presented to me through cd, video, or live presentation.
